"The Qiao family's house is over there, in the middle of the village," the villager pointed out to them.
"Next to the old house is a newly built courtyard, which has not yet been occupied."
The three of them stared at the new courtyard, their eyes suddenly lighting up.
It was a very large courtyard house, magnificent and beautiful, with blue bricks and red tiles, carved beams and painted pillars. Few families in the town could afford to live there.
"Father, Mother, I never imagined the Qiao family would be doing so well now," the girl said longingly.
"Yes, not only are they rich, but someone in their family has also become a military leader. Their fortunes are getting better and better, and who knows, they might produce a great general in the future."
The man nodded as he looked at the document, a hint of annoyance appearing between his brows as if he had thought of something.
"What should we say when we go to the Qiao family? Will they think we came looking for them again because they're well-off?" the woman said anxiously. "After all, it was us who—"
"Let's not talk about the past." The man was somewhat displeased: "The Qiao family isn't heartless."
After Qiao Lian'er finished feeding Da Hong, she turned around and saw three people coming to the courtyard gate.
These three people were strangers; I had never seen them before.
They were all dressed in fine cotton clothes, and their faces did not show the signs of hardship from working in the fields. They did not look like farmers, but rather that they had some wealth.
The girl had a round face, a ruddy complexion, was rather sturdy, and had a somewhat simple and honest appearance.
"Who are you looking for?" Qiao Lian'er asked.
"Girl, you don't recognize us, but your grandparents and your father are familiar with us." The man smiled kindly.
"Grandpa, Grandma, someone's looking for you," Qiao Lian'er called out as she turned around.
Old Mrs. Qiao and Old Mr. Qiao both came out, and upon seeing this couple, they felt that they were unfamiliar faces.
"Huh, who are you?"
The couple were somewhat disappointed when they saw that the elderly couple did not recognize them.
"Uncle Qiao, Aunt Qiao, I am Du Lao Er. Ten years ago, your Qiao family saved my husband and me on the mountain road, and since then our two families have been connected."
Upon hearing this, the two elders remembered, and a hint of sadness appeared on their faces, though they did not show it.
"Oh, it's you. Come in and have a seat." Old Man Qiao greeted the visitors with a smile and politely invited them into the main room, where he also brewed tea.
Du Lao Er rubbed his hands together: "Ten years have passed, and you two elders still look as dashing as ever, without a single change."
"Well, farmers, what's so special about them? It's just that life is a little better now, so they don't look as poor as they used to be," said Old Man Qiao.
"There's a saying that goes, 'Good fortune is yet to come,' and it seems that the Qiao family's fortune will only increase as time goes on."
Du Lao Er's wife, Madam Kang, said.
The couple spoke sweet words, but the two elders were down-to-earth, honest farmers who were not interested in such flattery.
Grandma Qiao: "I haven't seen you for ten years. I almost didn't recognize you when you suddenly came today. Maybe it's because I'm an old woman and my eyesight isn't good anymore."
Hint to Du Lao Er and his wife, revealing their purpose.
