"Some people, in order to make their arguments more convincing, will attribute the tasks done by their subordinates to themselves."
“When this family came to register their household, because their situation was a bit special and they had some status, the registrar consulted with me first, and I told him to handle it as he saw fit.”
"So, does Lord Zhang know the names of everyone in this family?"
Lord Zhang waved his hand: "I only know that his surname is Qiao, there's no need to look at his given name. It's just the registrar's job. If I were to handle every little detail, I would have been exhausted long ago."
Qiao Lian'er paused for a moment: "Then what is the background of this family?"
Asking about official business was inappropriate, but Shi Nanfu had returned to the capital, and she wanted to get more information as soon as possible.
However, Lord Zhang did not hold it against her. He was very grateful and believed that Qiao Lian'er would not be so bored as to ask these questions for no reason, so he answered her without reservation.
"He is from the capital region. It seems he resigned from his official post to live in seclusion, but some members of his family still hold official positions in the capital, and they are not low-ranking."
As Lord Zhang spoke, he observed the expressions on people's faces.
I was thinking to myself, I really hope nothing bad has happened. Nobody wants to get involved in a place like the capital.
However, Qiao Lian'er's face remained expressionless, revealing nothing.
Qiao Lian'er fell silent. Where in the capital did this person come from, with the exact same name as her? And coincidentally, the Pei family had run into trouble again.
Is this just a coincidence?
"Miss Qiao, Miss Qiao—" Seeing that she hadn't spoken for a long time, Lord Zhang was a little worried.
After thinking it over, Qiao Lian'er told Lord Zhang, "This family's daughter is also named Qiao Lian'er, but she is pitiful."
"What?" Lord Zhang was startled, a look of unease crossing his face. "This, this—"
It was one thing to have the surname Qiao; it wasn't unusual for families in a village to share the same surname, so he didn't pay much attention at the time. But it turned out to be the exact same name.
Thinking about it this way, the fact that this family suddenly wants to settle in Datian Village is probably not as simple as it seems on the surface.
Lord Zhang picked up his cup, trying to calm his nerves, but found his hands trembling.
This was the first time in his life he had encountered something so bizarre.
"Bring the registrar here."
After giving instructions to his men, Lord Zhang looked at Qiao Lian'er and said, "Miss Qiao, please wait a moment while I ask the registrar."
The registrar arrived quickly; he was a fat man around fifty years old with a mustache.
He bowed, but Lord Zhang wouldn't let him sit down. Instead, he looked at him and asked, "Five days ago, the Qiao family settled in Datian Village. Do you know the name of the young lady from that family? She shares the same name as Miss Qiao, and now they're from the same village."
The registrar asked in confusion, "May I ask, sir, who is Miss Qiao?"
"This is the man right in front of you, the strategist of the Guan Ning Iron Cavalry garrison."
The registrar glanced at Qiao Lian'er, still unable to understand why Lord Zhang looked so bad.
"There are so many people in this world with the same name. I, who am in charge of household registration, have encountered countless cases."
"Moreover, I know that there is a junior strategist in the Guan Ning Iron Cavalry garrison, but I don't know her name or where Strategist Qiao's home is located."
"Furthermore, even if people share the same name and live in the same village, such things do happen. I have already consulted with the adults, and everything is done according to procedure. I have not done anything wrong."
Seeing his bewildered look, and based on his years of understanding of him, Lord Zhang knew that there wasn't much of a problem here; at most, he was just trying to take advantage of a small thing.
But something just doesn't feel right.
