"Yes, yes, everyone, praise me!" Qiao Lian'er giggled.
The Qiao family was overjoyed and naturally didn't hold back in praising Qiao Lian'er.
With each compliment, Qiao Lian'er was calling everyone "lucky baby" and "clever." She was only joking, but the constant praise made her face flush. Then, Old Mrs. Qiao pulled her into her arms and pecked her cheeks several times.
Qiao Lian'er wiped the drool off her face, revealing a smile that was more like a grimace. She regretted it; she shouldn't have complimented him.
Then the Qiao family filled water bottles with water and went to the rice paddies to kill the insects.
"Serves you right for being arrogant and cocky, eating my rice. Now I'll show you what's what."
As she cursed, Old Lady Qiao held up the spray bottle and sprayed the insects fiercely.
"Old woman, don't get so agitated. You might damage your liver if you get too excited," Old Qiao said with a helpless smile.
"No matter how excited I get, it's not as exciting as when I see these bugs eating our grain. We've gotten through it before, haven't we?" Old Mrs. Qiao continued her grumbling, making everyone laugh.
Qiao Lian'er sat on the high embankment of the field, dispensing medicine to everyone.
Her gaze followed the river upstream, and she could vaguely see the construction team working in the distance.
With the floodwaters contained and the pests eradicated, the Qiao family is sure to have a bountiful harvest this year.
Although the Qiao family made a lot of money during this period, the shadow cast by these paddy fields on them was long-lasting and even became a source of anxiety for them.
This place filled them with hope, yet also brought them disappointment and setbacks.
Even now, when people can buy grain with silver and are no longer afraid of not being able to afford rice, this kind of mentality still exists.
This bumper harvest will help dispel the knots in their hearts.
Thinking of this, a smile appeared on Qiao Lian'er's face.
After a busy afternoon, the Qiao family finished irrigating twenty acres of paddy fields. One bottle of pesticide was obviously not enough, so Qiao Lian'er exchanged it for three more. It was great to have gold coins in the space; not only could they be used to upgrade the land, but they could also be used to exchange for resources. Unless absolutely necessary, they didn't need to spend real money.
Seeing that all the insects were dead and the rice paddies were clean, the Qiao family felt extremely relieved.
"Lian'er, how long will these pesticides last?" Qiao Laosan asked.
"It will last for half a month. We'll come back for another treatment after that," Qiao Lian'er said.
Da Yong: "But we've used up all the pesticides. Will there be any more pesticides left to sell?"
When Qiao Lian'er went shopping in town, she sometimes went separately with her two older brothers. Sometimes they didn't even know what she bought, so when Qiao Lian'er said she bought pesticides, Da Yongxin didn't suspect a thing.
“I’ll see that barefoot doctor every now and then, and I’ll buy more from him then,” Qiao Lian’er said.
Old Man Qiao nodded: "If the pests are completely controlled, this year's yield will be at least double."
Everyone packed up their gear and headed back, but Qiao Lian'er called out to Da Yong and Da Cheng.
"Brother Dayong, Brother Cheng, I want to eat fish."
“Okay, if Lian’er wants to eat fish, then let’s catch some fish for Lian’er to eat,” Da Cheng quickly said.
Actually, villagers go down to the river every day, but very few catch any fish. Let's hope they have better luck.
Grandma Qiao instructed, "Take good care of your sister and don't let her fall."
"Don't worry, Grandma, I'll cushion your fall," Da Yong said with a smile.
After her family returned home, Qiao Lian'er's face became serious. She pulled the two of them to a grove of banana trees.
"Da Yong, Da Cheng, I want you to do something."
Da Yong: "Aren't we going down to the river to catch fish?"
Qiao Lian'er shook her head: "This matter concerns Sister Xi'er's lifelong happiness, and is much more important than catching fish."
