As soon as Princess Shouguang saw Jiang Shuxue, she began to scold Jiang Shijing.
“You’re crazy and unambitious every day. What kind of talk is this? I don’t expect you to study. How long has it been since you last visited me? How long has it been since you last went to your father’s place? I have to send someone to invite you before you even come to see your mother.”
Jiang Shijing sat on the ground, playing with his fingers and then picking at his hair.
Suddenly he became impatient: "My mother scolded me, so I shouldn't have come. Humph, this is no fun at all."
Then he got up, muttered to himself, and left the courtyard without even glancing at Jiang Shuxue, as if he didn't recognize her.
Jiang Shuxue wasn't surprised. Jiang Shijing had been mentally unstable since childhood, and she had never been close to her younger brother, so the two had a distant relationship.
Princess Shouguang sighed and raised her sleeve to press a corner of her eye.
Jiang Shuxue hurried over and sat down next to her.
“Mother, my brother is not mentally sound to begin with. Don’t take it to heart. No matter what, we are still mother and son. He says one thing, but he’ll be back to his old ways soon.”
"Sigh, let's hope so. With your brother like this, your mother can only count on you." Princess Shouguang patted Jiang Shuxue's hand.
"Mother, even if I marry into the Zhong family, I will try my best to take care of you and won't let you suffer in your old age," Jiang Shuxue promised.
“With such a large dowry from my mother, I feel confident in the Zhong family. My mother is in poor health, and I want to come back to see her anytime. I believe the Zhong family will not have any objections.”
Princess Shouguang remained noncommittal.
She knew very well that in Jiang Shuxue's eyes, her greatest value was the dowry she brought from Prince Lu's mansion.
If Jiang Shuxue is her daughter, it certainly chills her heart; if not, then she and Madam Wei are enemies plotting against her property and dowry.
As Jiang Shuxue spoke, she opened the food basket and took out several kinds of snacks and soups.
“These are all my mother’s favorite dishes, and I personally instructed the cook to make them.”
Princess Shouguang said, "I don't have much of an appetite right now. Your Aunt Wei likes to eat snacks, so why don't you take some to her?"
Jiang Shuxue subconsciously tried to decipher Princess Shouguang's expression, only to see her smiling, with an air of tolerance and kindness.
"Mother, actually, I will also visit Aunt Wei. Aren't you angry, Mother?"
Princess Shouguang shook her head: "You are my daughter. Even if you go to her often, you can't be her daughter. Otherwise, wouldn't you be a heartless scoundrel? I believe Shuxue is a filial person and wouldn't do such a thing."
Jiang Shuxue's face stiffened for a moment, and a surge of anger welled up inside her.
The reason why Princess Shouguang didn't care was simply because she genuinely felt that the girl was her daughter.
It's like a bird; even if it flies out to get close to others, it will eventually return to its cage.
Jiang Shuxue felt uncomfortable all over.
She secretly thought that once she received her dowry and successfully married into the Zhong family, she would definitely go and show off in front of the dying Princess Shouguang and tell her the truth.
Let her know that the daughter she has doted on for so many years is not her biological child, and let her feel deeply hurt.
Hearing this, Jiang Shuxue felt it was a waste to give these things to Princess Shouguang, and she suppressed her anger.
"Then I will do as Mother says and send it to Mother—Aunt Wei."
Princess Shouguang smiled.
