Xu Zhaoyue didn't sleep well. She felt like many things were flashing through her mind, but she couldn't grasp them no matter what she did.
"What is that!" Xu Zhaoyue felt fire burning her face. She immediately woke up from her dream and saw her grandmother touching her face with rough marks on her hands.
"Ha, that scared me to death! I thought I was on fire!" Xu Zhaoyue patted her chest, still shaken.
"Don't be afraid, sweetie. Grandma is here. I didn't tell you yesterday because I saw you were scared. After breakfast, Grandma will tell you everything that has happened over the years."
Xu Zhaoyue nodded obediently. When Cui Cui dressed her, she carefully looked her over and thought she was really beautiful. "Miss Jin, do you like this color? If you don't like it, I'll have a tailor come to our house."
"Hmm, light green is quite pretty," Xu Zhaoyue commented. "I don't have any colors I dislike. Anyway, I look good in anything, so I can wear anything." Her tone was charming and bright.
Cui Cui hadn't expected her to have this kind of temper. It's good that she's more lively. "Okay, Miss is beautiful because she takes after her great-aunt."
"Like my grandmother? Why do you call her 'Grandma'? What about my mother?" Xu Zhaoyue asked, puzzled. "It was my fault for being nosy. Grandma should tell Miss about this," Cui Cui said.
When Grandma Qin told her the story, she finally understood. It turned out that her mother had married and divorced her father when she was young, and she had come to Shanghai with her father.
My father was seriously ill a while ago and wrote a letter to my grandmother. Just the day before yesterday, our house caught fire and burned down, leaving her alone and suffering from amnesia.
"Then my mother already...?" Tears welled up in Xu Zhaoyue's eyes, and an inexplicable sadness made her believe the story even more.
"Alright, don't cry, don't cry. Your mother can't bear to see you cry either. If your father hadn't married into the family, I wouldn't have married my daughter to him. Who would have thought it would turn out like this?"
Grandma Qin held Xu Zhaoyue in her arms, and the two snuggled together.
Taking advantage of the doctor's words that everything was alright, Grandma Qin quickly took Xu Zhaoyue and left Shanghai. They were going to leave anyway, and the luggage they had prepared made the lie seem more believable.
During her journey, Xu Zhaoyue gradually learned about her family in the capital. Her grandmother's name was Qin Tingyu, and she was the eldest in the family. Her child was named Qin Tingyi, and her granddaughter was named Qin Jijin.
Grandma Qin's brother passed away some years ago. He had three children: Qin Jinghui, Qin Jingqian, and Qin Jinglan, two sons and one daughter. Qin Jijin had to call them uncles and aunts.
Qin Jinghui has a daughter named Qin Jixiang and a son named Qin Jiming. Qin Jingqian has two sons named Qin Jizhong and Qin Jishu. Qin Jijin calls them his cousins.
While teaching Xu Zhaoyue, Grandma Qin also sent a message back to the Qin family, recounting what had happened in Shanghai and making a promise in order to get their cooperation.
"Big brother, what is Auntie doing? Wasn't she taking my cousin to get treatment? How come there was a fire, and now she's bringing a granddaughter back?" Qin Jingqian read the letter carefully, completely baffled.
"Don't just look at this, look at the benefits she's given us." Qin Jinghui smoked, his face showing confusion but no worry.
Qin Jingqian saw it, of course. "Even if we were to give all her assets to us, we could just give a portion to this child. But logically, these things should have been ours in the first place."
"Hey, Auntie wanted to donate all those things to pray for my cousin's well-being. She even staged a fake funeral. If we don't agree, how much of those things do you think we can take?"
Qin Jinghui looked at the embers of the cigarette butt and stubbed it out in the ashtray. "Alright, gather your family and talk things out. Make sure they all remember what they should and shouldn't do. It's only for six months anyway."
When Xu Zhaoyue arrived at the Qin family as Qin Jijin, the Qin family had already made preparations, and even Qin Jinglan had returned.
"Child, go downstairs, we're going home." Grandma Qin looked at the two younger relatives who came to open the door eagerly. "The one who opened the door for you is Qin Jizhong, and this is Uncle Qin Ji, your second uncle's child."
"Hello, cousin!" Xu Zhaoyue greeted the person in front of her. Qin Jizhong was a little stunned when he came over to open the door because he didn't expect the girl his great-aunt had brought back to be so beautiful.
Seeing that he didn't speak and that her grandmother had already left, Xu Zhaoyue called out again, "Cousin, I should get off the bus now."
"Oh, let me help you, be careful." Qin Jizhong reached out to help her down, but Xu Zhaoyue didn't grab his hand; instead, she held his arm.
After getting out of the car, they were ushered inside. Xu Zhaoyue felt the scrutinizing gazes around her. After all, she had left when she was young, so it was understandable that everyone was curious about her.
Xu Zhaoyue quietly settled into a new life, while things were in complete chaos in Shanghai. Xu Zhaohao was urgently summoned back, only to find himself facing a confrontation between two opposing camps.
Xu Zhaohao only received the message that he was going home soon. He didn't expect that when he returned, he would be informed that his second sister had burned down the hospital. In the end, he had brought this upon himself, and his eldest sister was also trapped up there, her face completely disfigured.
Before he could even process the tears, his father made him take over the position of vice president to stabilize morale, while everyone around his eldest sister was saying that she was definitely still alive.
However, his father had already cremated both of his older sisters, so nothing could be seen from them.
He was at Moon Bay Villa at the moment.
Wu's mother sat there wiping away her tears. "It's my fault. I knew I needed an autopsy, but I didn't expect him to be so quick. He sent the body to be cremated that very night, and we haven't heard a thing since."
“Aunt Wu, my father really did wrong. I didn’t even get to see my sister one last time.” Xu Zhaohao didn’t know what to say. How could a father do something like cremating her overnight?
