Chapter 2 On the Ship

There were only five sentences in total. Xiaonan didn't need to memorize words or specific phonetic symbols; she just needed to pronounce them accurately. These sentences were quite simple, and Xiaonan said them all smoothly.

Xu Zhaoyue nodded in satisfaction and clapped for her. "I knew Xiaonan was amazing. She memorized it all in such a short time. We'll learn these this morning and teach you something new this afternoon. It's almost noon and the sun is too strong. Let's go back now."

Seeing that the young lady was still clapping for her, Xiao Nan turned her head to look around and found that no one was paying attention to them. She was relieved and immediately shifted her attention when she heard that it was almost noon. "What would you like to eat for lunch, Miss? If you want Chinese food, I'll go and queue up right away."

"Oh, are there any chefs on the ship who cook Chinese food? Do we have to get up so early to queue?" Xu Zhaoyue glanced at her watch; it was only 10:30. Were the chefs that popular? She was a little puzzled.

Xiao Nan gulped down a few mouthfuls of orange juice, and half of the glass that was still half full was gone in an instant. "There are only four: Shandong cuisine, Sichuan cuisine, Cantonese cuisine, and Huaiyang cuisine. Each one is different. I'm so busy every day. Chinese people still love Chinese food. There's always a shortage."

“That’s true. The bread and ham I ate yesterday were worse than what I eat at home. So why don’t you bring me a few Shandong dishes?” Xu Zhaoyue’s memory became clearer and clearer. She even remembered the lunch she had yesterday. After thinking about it carefully, she realized that the taste was indeed not very good.

"Hmm, are you going back to your room now, Miss?" Xiao Nan finally finished her orange juice, but judging from her expression, it wasn't very tasty. She only drank it so hard because she didn't want to waste it.

Xu Zhaoyue glanced at the orange juice in front of her. It was indeed a waste. "You go first. I'll sit for a while and then go back. Oh, and if you can get more, you guys should have some too."

"Yes, I know. The food for our servants is pretty good. They ordered the best set meal for us." Xiao Nan nodded to indicate that she understood. "I'll go check first. Miss, remember to bring an umbrella, or you'll get sunburned."

Xiao Nan deliberately hung the umbrella on the armrest of Xu Zhaoyue's chair from behind her, gave her a brief explanation, and then left.

"Okay." Xu Zhaoyue replied, then sat there in a daze, drinking orange juice as she did so. After finishing it, she got up and went back to her cabin, only to suddenly remember halfway there that she had forgotten something.

"What's wrong with my brain? I really need to be reminded." Xu Zhaoyue gently patted her forehead. Sure enough, Xiaonan understood her best. Xu Zhaoyue went back to get her umbrella.

Xiao Nan arrived at her mistress's door with the food box. Before she could even knock, her mistress opened the door. "You're back quite early, less than an hour ago," Xu Zhaoyue said, letting her in.

“Uncle Sun has been helping out there these past two days. He saw me as soon as I arrived. If the chef hadn’t started cooking late, I would have been back much earlier. But it’s just lunchtime now.”

After Xiao Nan came in, she brought out all the dishes. "Kung Pao Chicken, freshly fried yellow croaker, premium tofu, and four-happiness meatballs. Miss, please sit down. What kind of tea would you like? I'll make it for you."

Xu Zhaoyue looked at the vibrant colors of the dishes, still steaming hot, and knew they were freshly cooked. "Green tea, please, it'll cut through the greasiness. By the way, didn't Uncle Sun leave you any?"

"I'll keep him, I'll keep him. Uncle Sun is amazing. I was wondering why I hadn't seen him these past few days. He goes to help the head chef's apprentice wash vegetables every morning and they chat happily. In just two days, he's already working as a waiter." Xiao Nan said, while her hands were busy, quickly finding the tea set and brewing tea.

"I thought Uncle Sun could rest these two days, but I didn't expect him to find himself a job, just to make it easier to pick up vegetables?" Xu Zhaoyue was both amused and exasperated.

Xiao Nan poured the tea. "It seems that Aunt Wu asked him to go. He listens to his wife in everything except what Miss says. How could he dare not go if Aunt Wu asked him to?"

"Aunt Wu and Uncle Sun have such a good relationship," Xu Zhaoyue joked.

Xiao Nan nodded and said, "Yes, all the maids in the house are envious. Aunt Wu and Uncle Sun are an old couple who never even quarrel. Even though they don't have children, they are always sweet and loving."

Xu Zhaoyue took a sip of tea to moisten her throat. "You're right, they are the two elders left to me by my mother."

"That's right, Miss. Please go eat, I'll go downstairs first." After Xiao Nan finished dividing the four-happiness meatballs, she looked around. There was nothing else for her to do, so she went downstairs to eat as well.

"Go ahead, just come back in an hour." Xu Zhaoyue waved her hand and let her leave.

After Xu Zhaoyue finished eating, she checked her watch and it was time. Xiao Nan was always very punctual, so why wasn't she here today? After tidying up the food box, Xu Zhaoyue waited for a while longer, but Xiao Nan still hadn't arrived. She wondered if something had happened to her, so she prepared to go out and look for her.

As soon as I opened the door, I saw Xiao Nan running over, panting. "Miss... I'm sorry I'm late."

"It's alright, it's alright. Come in and have some water first, don't rush." Xu Zhaoyue pulled her into the room. Fortunately, the tea was warm, not hot. She quickly poured a glass of water for Xiaonan and handed it to her.

After Xiaonan finished drinking the water and calmed down, she began to explain the reason herself: "After I finished eating, I was thinking of asking Aunt Wu, and then I saw her grinding medicinal herbs. Aunt Wu brought the medicinal herbs up, but the grinding tool was too heavy, so she didn't bring it up."

"Uncle Sun saw this in the kitchen on the first day, so he went to help and lent it out to Aunt Wu." Xiao Nan was able to say such a long string of words after finishing her water.
