Chapter 55 Holding Hands

Xu Zhaoyue was eating the roast duck rolls that Xiaonan had made for her. She had just finished eating when she saw Xiaonan start eating again, but she couldn't speak because her mouth was full, so she could only watch as Xiaonan rolled up another one.

"Alright, I'll just eat three rolls. Take it away." Xu Zhaoyue took the third roll before speaking.

As soon as Yue Lanxing entered, he saw the young lady eating with her cheeks puffed out. She was waving her hands as she ate, which looked rather cute. He went over and took the plate of roast duck off the table, and asked Xiao Nan to serve her in the room.

"You finished talking so quickly?" Xu Zhaoyue muttered to herself as she watched Yue Lanxing come in and go. "Huh? Miss, which dish did you want?" Xiao Nan heard her speak but didn't quite catch what she said, so she asked.

Xu Zhaoyue quickly shook her head, then thought it best not to explain, so she pointed to the outermost dish of braised seven delicacies and said, "I want that one, the one with shrimp." Xiao Nan brought the dish over after hearing this, and didn't ask any more questions.

Xu Zhaoyue secretly breathed a sigh of relief. Just now, while she was thinking, she remembered that given Yue Lanxing's illness, his relationship with his family must not be close. Even his blood-related mother could not be with him much. Growing up in such an environment must have been very difficult.

But I am the same way, Xu Zhaoyue thought to herself. After my mother passed away, I had no relatives left. My father was away from home for a long time and left me with the servants. Later, I got a stepmother.

Perhaps because she was projecting her own situation onto Xu Zhaoyue, she unconsciously became sentimental, and the food in front of her didn't taste as good as before. "I'm full, take it all away," Xu Zhaoyue said lightly.

"Huh?" Xiao Nan exclaimed in surprise. She had only eaten seven or eight dishes, how could she be full? However, seeing that her mistress's expression was not very good, Xiao Nan did not ask why. She simply saw her mistress out and then asked someone to clean up and prepare some snacks.

"You two make some small cakes later, and bake some cookies. We've been keeping orange juice on hand, and also make some apple juice." Yue Lanxing happened to be next to Xiao Nan as she gave these instructions. It sounded like the young lady might have a late-night snack. Could it be that she didn't eat much for dinner?

Yue Lanxing hesitated for a moment but still decided to ask, "Did you not have a good appetite for dinner, Miss? Wouldn't it be too dry to eat cake and cookies for a late-night snack?"

"It's alright, Miss doesn't like late-night snacks or dishes, just prepare cakes and cookies." After Xiao Nan finished explaining, seeing Yue Lanxing's worried look, an idea popped into her head.

Xiao Nan looked at one of the maids and asked, "I remember there used to be a bakery that was open at night. Is it still there?"

"Yes, the cake saleswoman at that shop even praised him. If the chef hadn't felt that making pastries exclusively for one person wouldn't showcase his skills, the young lady would have poached him."

"Where is the shop? If it's still open, I'll go buy some." Yue Lanxing was very accommodating. He asked eagerly, completely unaware of Xiao Nan's furtive glances at him. He was already quite satisfied.

After Yue Lanxing got the address, she drove off, but Xiao Nan still asked the two of them to do some things so the shop wouldn't close. After they finished, Xiao Nan went to the study, where Xu Zhaoyue was reading.

Xiao Nan remembered what her mistress had once said: that reading could help one understand many principles, and if one didn't understand something, one should read it several times until one understood it. Whenever her mistress had something she couldn't figure out, she would read books, many books, and sometimes she would even forget the problem that was originally troubling her because she was so engrossed in reading.

"Miss, I just asked Butler Yue to buy a cake. You can have it as a midnight snack if you want to eat it later." Xiao Nan walked to Xu Zhaoyue's side.

Xu Zhaoyue was reading but couldn't concentrate. When she heard Xiaonan mention Yue Lanxing, she looked up at her and asked, "Huh? Go out to buy it? Don't we have someone at home who knows how to make it?"

"Oh, I was just thinking about what you praised before, Miss? If you want something homemade, we have it too. I've already asked them to prepare it." Xiao Nan said happily, assuring her that whatever flavor her young lady wanted, they would have it.

Seeing the proud look on her face, Xu Zhaoyue couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Great, you're the smartest. Go pour me a cup of tea, I'll read a book in my room for a while."

Xiao Nan immediately brought over some tea, placed it on the tea table in front of the young lady, and then left the study.

Xu Zhaoyue put down the book, her mind filled with images from her childhood. At the age of four or five, she could already remember things very clearly. Her mother's name was Jin Tingyu, and in her memory, she had a very beautiful face. Her appearance was exactly like her mother's.

As for the relationship between my mother and father, they were respectful to each other. When my mother was in her own family, she was not expected to be a teacher. She even had to go to her master's house on her own, because she couldn't have any seniority because of the Jin family's reputation.

Later, she met her father. What did her mother say at the time? It seems that she chose her father because of his ambition. Her mother did not want to marry a young master from another family and be a wife for the rest of her life, so she chose Xu Guangcai. The two of them worked hard together to build the Xu family.

Thinking about it this way, Mother's wish should have come true. The Xu family is now one of the top families in Shanghai. Although it can't compare to the Jin family in Beijing, the two families haven't been in contact for a long time, so there's no way to compare them.

Her mother passed away from illness. Before she died, she had no regrets except for worrying about Xu Zhaoyue. So, at the last moment, she invited witnesses to hand over all her property to Xu Zhaoyue. If anything happened to Xu Zhaoyue, the Jin family would naturally come to take it back. Therefore, no one could shake Xu Zhaoyue's status as the eldest daughter.

Because of her mother's methods, Xu Zhaoyue became the youngest and first confirmed heir in Shanghai, which meant at least half of the Xu family.

Later, her father worked away from home for a long time, and felt more responsibility towards Xu Zhaoyue. Now he even wants Xu Zhaohao to join the company. Oh, he had already let Xu Zhaoming join the company to test the waters before.
