Chapter 9: The Second Selection

Xu Zhaoyue then said to Yue Xuanxuan, "The teachers all said that you usually tutor Xiaohao. Even if it's not a graduation gift, it should be a thank-you gift for the teachers. They will each receive one later, so you can keep this one."

Hearing the young lady say that, Yue Xuanxuan accepted the gift. "Then I'll accept it. Thank you, young lady. I will definitely make good use of it."

"The tea is here." Aunt Wu came out with a tray and served them tea. Yue Xuanxuan had jasmine tea, the same as Xu Zhaoyue, while Yue Lanxing had Biluochun tea, the same as Xu Zhaohao.

Before Xu Zhaoyue could even take a sip, Xu Dachuan arrived with his men. A servant announced from outside, "Let them in," Xu Zhaoyue said.

"Young Miss, you're back!" Xu Dachuan knew that Yue Lanxing was already here, but when he saw a figure in a suit and tie from behind, he was still taken aback. Was this really Yue Lanxing?

Yue Lanxing seemed to know his surprise and actually turned around to look at him. It really was him. How come you didn't realize he looked so noble? He was sitting opposite the young lady and the young master, but he was not at a disadvantage at all. They were talking business, evenly matched.

"Um, these are... these are the people you asked me to bring, they're all here." Xu Dachuan stammered, but no one paid any attention.

Xu Zhaoyue looked at the eight people behind him and said, "I know. I asked you to come here today so that I could choose a few people for myself and Xiao Hao. You don't need to be nervous. Take a pen and a piece of paper from here and sit down across from me."

"Yes, Miss." Xu Dachuan turned around and looked at the eight people behind him, waved to them, and gestured for them to come forward. They were still a little hesitant, but Yue Lanxing had already gotten up and taken his pen and paper.

Xu Zhaoyue looked at the hand reaching out in front of her. She covered half of her face with a cup. The condensation on the cup made her vision a little blurry. She was still wondering, do all tall people have such beautiful hands?

Li Qi was also surprised when he saw Yue Lanxing. As expected of Yue, it was as if he had been given special treatment. He was able to sit face to face with the young lady so quickly. After seeing Yue Lanxing get up, Li Qi quickly came over as well. His actions inspired the rest of the group.

After everyone received their items, they all looked at Xu Zhaoyue with expectant eyes. "First, write your name and age on the paper, then write where you live, how many people are in your family, what school you went to, and where you worked before coming to the Xu Family Martial Arts School."

After receiving the paper, they knew they had to write. Since the young lady had spoken, they all buried themselves in their writing. Only one person hadn't picked up his pen yet. "Why aren't you writing?" Xu Zhaohao felt like a teacher, and thought he had to be very strict in supervising.

So when he saw that Xue Huzi was different from the others, he immediately shouted at him. Everyone at the table looked over, and after seeing that it was a young man, Yue Lanxing looked away.

"I've never been to school, I can't write, I can only write my name," Xue Huzi said truthfully. As soon as he finished speaking, he heard someone snickering, but there was nothing he could do. Apart from writing his own name, he couldn't write anything else.

Xu Zhaohao had never seen someone so uncultured before, and he stared at him curiously for a while. But after looking closely, he found that there was nothing wrong with him from the outside. Could it be a problem with his intelligence or that his family was in a bad situation?

Xu Zhaoyue thought this person had a round face and looked quite young. "Let me see the name you wrote."

"Yes, yes." Xue Huzi quickly stood up and handed over the paper, but when he stretched out his arm, he found that he couldn't reach the young lady at all. Just as he was feeling embarrassed, Yue Lanxing stretched out her arm to take it, and then respectfully handed it to Xu Zhaoyue.

Xue Huzi glanced gratefully at Yue Lanxing, but the other didn't see it and sat down to write again.

Xu Zhaoyue looked at the three neatly written characters on the paper. Judging from the notes on those characters, it was clear that he had put in a lot of effort. "Sister, he..." Xu Zhaohao leaned closer, about to say something.

"How does your handwriting compare to this?" Xu Zhaoyue handed the paper to Xu Zhaohao. "Ah, mine is definitely much better." Xu Zhaohao took the paper and heard his sister ask him. Of course, he couldn't admit in front of so many people that his handwriting was not as good as this one.

Xu Zhaoyue found it amusing that he still knew to cover his face with a piece of paper, and even her voice carrying amusement when she asked the question, "Xue Huzi? You've never been to school, so what does your family do? Why didn't they let you go to school?"

“Yes, I was adopted. My parents had an accident when I was very young, and I was raised by my aunt and uncle. Going to school would cost a lot of money, so I didn’t go to school,” Xue Huzi explained.

Xu Zhaoyue nodded and continued chatting with him, "How old are you? What were you doing before? If you weren't in school, when did you start working?"

Xue Huzi thought that the young lady would ignore him after she found out he couldn't write, but she asked him so many questions and didn't seem to mind that he couldn't read. So he took the young lady's questions even more seriously and even sat up straighter.

"I'm 21 today. I'm naturally strong. I came to Xu's Wharf when I was 15 and have been loading and unloading cargo ever since." Xue Huzi's face had nothing to do with his strength, and he didn't even have the kind of physique that would make someone look very strong.

Xu Zhaoyue had some experience; he was only two years younger than her. While they were chatting, everyone else had already finished writing. They could even lower their heads to hide their expressions while writing. Seeing that everyone had finished, they started looking around. Xue Huzi felt that many people were watching him.

“Since you’ve finished writing, keep writing…” Xu Zhaoyue read a sentence in English, and everyone around her understood it. “Sister, there’s someone here who can’t write. Isn’t foreign language too difficult?” Xu Zhaohao didn’t expect his sister to need someone who could understand foreign languages, and his eyes widened as he spoke.
