As Xu Zhaoyue flipped through the pages, she observed his condition. "What's wrong? You look a bit dazed. Do you have a fever?" She then stood up and tried to feel Yue Lanxing's forehead with her hand.
Even in a dazed state, Yue Lanxing immediately dodged backward, casually pushing Xu Zhaoyue's arm away. Only after he pushed Xu Zhaoyue's hand away did he realize what was happening. "Ah? Miss, I'm sorry, I'm fine. I just drank too much with Brother Fang at noon, and my mind isn't quite right now."
Yue Lanxing stood up abruptly, bowed his head and admitted his mistake, his brows furrowed, as if he had done something terrible.
Xu Zhaoyue looked at her hands, then saw Yue Lanxing's frustrated expression. Because of his slow reaction, the expression on his face was even more genuine. Xu Zhaoyue sat back down, thinking that she shouldn't argue with a drunk person.
"Alright, sit down. Tell me, what level do you think Zhang Pei's article is at?" Xu Zhaoyue knew he was embarrassed. When drunk, it's hard to control one's emotions, and all emotions are amplified.
Once there's a clear emotional trigger, his mind will keep replaying the event and delving deeper into it. Xu Zhaoyue was afraid he'd get stuck on it, so she quickly changed the subject.
Yue Lanxing visibly relaxed upon hearing the new question. "I think it's just average. It's like writing an essay; you're given a topic and you write an article. I didn't see anything else."
“That’s true. You can learn spoken English on your own, but this person’s writing is indeed mediocre.” Xu Zhaoyue felt the same way after reading the two articles. It seems that Zhang Pei is not the talented scholar Chen Yun described.
"Thank you for the compliment, Miss..." Yue Lanxing was initially pleased, but then thought about telling the young lady what Mu Tou had found out. "Miss, I've also found out some other things, but I don't know if I should tell you?"
Xu Zhaoyue looked at him with interest. "Shouldn't you be the one to continue at a time like this? Go ahead and tell me, I want to hear what's so important that you need to ask me this question."
Yue Lanxing coughed and recounted what happened at Shui Zhi Mei, "That's how it is. I've already sent people to follow up, and I've also arranged for some people we know to be at the newspaper."
Xu Zhaoyue was shocked because she didn't expect Chen Yun to be dumped in her first relationship. "No way, this guy isn't as good-looking as you, he's not as tall as you, and he definitely can't beat you in a fight. He's inferior to you in every way."
"He actually... he's two-timing? Is this information reliable?" Xu Zhaoyue asked again, afraid that Yue Lanxing might give the wrong information in his current state.
Yue Lanxing shook his head. He couldn't quite process what the young lady had said for a moment. Of course, he was only referring to the things mentioned earlier. As for the relationships between the people, he wasn't wrong. "The people I sent out watched them enter the restaurant and followed them in. But just in case, I had someone take a picture next time."
Xu Zhaoyue is angry now, but she won't call Chen Yun immediately. After all, he is her boyfriend. She just heard about something, and she can't bring up things without evidence.
"And also, Miss!" Yue Lanxing's tone suddenly became serious, as if he had something else to say. Under Xu Zhaoyue's curious gaze, he finally spoke, "I can't compare to Zhang Pei. I have no relation to anyone else."
Yue Lanxing hesitated for a moment, then said, "I am the young lady's person. The young lady cannot compare me to others." Her voice grew softer and softer, and if the room hadn't been so quiet, Xu Zhaoyue would have almost not heard the last few words.
Yue Lanxing felt his face burning, as did his ears, so he lowered his head even further. But his ears still betrayed his feelings; he couldn't tell whether shyness or shame was stronger.
Looking at this subordinate who was pledging his loyalty to her, Xu Zhaoyue was in a good mood. To be honest, she was finally not bothered by the hand that had been shaken off earlier. "Ahem, very good. You're right. You're one of my people. You don't need to compare yourself to others. Even comparing yourself to Zhang Pei would lower your status."
Looking at his thick hair and red ears, Xu Zhaoyue immediately forgot everything else. She really wanted to touch his head and ears, but it was just a thought in her mind.
“Your spoken English is good. Go get a book.” Xu Zhaoyue pointed to the bookshelf behind Yue Lanxing. Yue Lanxing looked up and glanced at it. Although she didn’t understand why, she followed the instruction and went to the bookshelf.
Yue Lanxing spotted the familiar books at a glance. He took them out and returned to his seat, unsure whether to keep them for himself or give them to the young lady.
Xu Zhaoyue saw that the book he pulled out was a collection of poems. "Just pick one and read it aloud. I'd like to hear it." She deliberately lowered her voice. She was now certain that Yue Lanxing was in a semi-drunk state, but this state was quite interesting.
Xu Zhaoyue's voice was very soft, like a feather landing on Yue Lanxing's ear. She could feel a slight touch, but there was nothing there. Yue Lanxing unconsciously scratched her ear and touched her earlobe, which was surprisingly hot.
Yue Lanxing opened the table of contents, found her favorite passage, cleared her throat, and began to read: "When you are old and gray and full of sleep, and nodding by the fire, you take down this book and slowly read it, and dream of your former glory, and your gentle eyes reflecting your deepest image..."
Yue Lanxing read a sentence aloud, and Xu Zhaoyue translated it in her mind: "No wonder it's a collection of love poems."
After Yue Lanxing finished reading, he closed the book, looked up at Xu Zhaoyue, and his eyes were full of emotions. Xu Zhaoyue tried to discern them, but couldn't.
"How much did you drink?" Xu Zhaoyue was genuinely asking. For the first time, Yue Lanxing, who had always been on high alert, showed a confused and annoyed expression. It was even happening while he was drunk. She was really curious about how much alcohol Fang Erge had made Yue Lanxing drink.
