Chapter 127: Little Hope

In the office, Lu An Ning sat on the sofa with a sullen face. The dean pushed his glasses with a smile and apologized to Lu An Ning in a good mood.

"Miss Lu, I'm so sorry! Our caregiver has a bad temper and may have been offensive in her words. I hope you can forgive me."

"Director, the elderly living here shouldn't be abused. I don't think I said anything wrong!"

Director Liu sighed deeply, "Miss Lu, you don't know that nursing homes generally don't accept cases like the old director's. Sister Wu has a bad temper, but she's the only one willing to take care of the old director."

It turned out that the old director had injured his head years ago and had become somewhat mentally retarded. Medical examinations revealed various problems, and after retiring early from the orphanage, he, childless, moved here. He had been through numerous caregivers, and while initially he was merely mentally retarded, now he couldn't even control his bowel movements. Gradually, no one wanted to care for him anymore.

"Now that there are still people willing to take care of him, I don't dare to ask for anything else. The old director lives here, and I have always paid for it myself. It's also very difficult for me."

Lu Anning hadn't expected things to turn out like this, and for a moment he was in a dilemma. The old dean was in a state of confusion, not even recognizing who he was, let alone expecting him to help him solve his doubts.

Lu Anning was stumped. He wanted to know his life experience from the old dean, but he had to cure the patient first.

Tang Jingyuan suddenly spoke up: "The old dean has caused you a lot of trouble here. Since he has health problems, we are willing to take him to the hospital for treatment so that he can recover soon."

Lu Anning was shocked. Just as she was about to speak, Tang Jingyuan took the lead.

Dean Liu thanked Tang Jingyuan with gratitude: "It would be great if the old dean could receive treatment. Here, my ability is limited and I really can't provide him with a good treatment environment."

Tang Jingyuan was a man of action. With just one word, Lin Tao immediately sent for someone to come and pick him up. The old dean didn't have much stuff, and his daily clothes were so worn out that they looked terrible. Lu Anning simply didn't want them. He only had a mahogany box, which the old dean insisted he hold, and no one was allowed to touch it.

Lu Anning saw an exquisitely crafted copper lock hanging on the box, and he thought that there must be something very important to the old dean inside.

The old director refused to be touched, but they didn't force him and coaxed him into the car. The hospital had already arranged a ward and was waiting at the door. Everything went smoothly, and the old director quickly adapted to the new environment and felt much better.

It’s just that it’s too late today, and we have to wait until tomorrow to examine the old dean.

It was already evening when Lu Anning and Tang Jingyuan came out of the hospital. After a busy day, they finally felt hungry. Their stomachs rumbled a few times, and they looked at each other. Lu Anning blushed and laughed out loud.

"You helped me so much today, I'll treat you to dinner."

Lu Anning was extremely hungry, so he chose a nearby restaurant that looked nice. Perhaps because they were so hungry, both of them had good appetites.

During the meal, Tang Jingyuan asked Lu Anning, "What are your plans next? The old dean's specific condition is still unclear, and whether he can recover is still unknown. Do you want to wait, or find a breakthrough from the Lu family?"

Lu An Ning stopped what she was doing. Going to the Lu family meant that she wanted to make a deal with them.

They have finally grasped this point. If they continue to negotiate, they might even raise the price, which is obviously not the best option.

She was even more worried that even if she helped the Lu family get what they wanted, Lu Zhenghao might not tell her the truth. She didn't dare trust anyone in the Lu family, and she didn't want to go to the Lu family unless it was absolutely necessary.

Taking a deep breath, Lu Anning said, "Let's wait until the old dean's examination results come out before we talk about it. There's no need to rush in the next few days."

When it was late at night and everyone was asleep, Lu Anning quietly turned over and opened his eyes.

She had thought this wouldn't affect her, but unexpectedly, she still couldn't sleep. She was too busy during the day, so she didn't have time to think about those delicate things. Now, as she calmed down, the question came to her mind, and she couldn't get rid of it.

She had always thought that she was abandoned by her parents, so she had never thought about finding them. Suddenly, she learned that they had left something for her. Lu Anning couldn't help but wonder, were they leaving it to her in the hope that they would see each other again one day?

Or was there something unspeakable behind our separation?

How difficult would it be to abandon yourself in your cradle at the door of a dilapidated orphanage?

His long arms slid around her waist, pulling her into his warm embrace. Tang Jingyuan leaned forward, his deep voice soothing her troubled heart.

"Don't think too much. No matter what happens, I'm still here. Never force yourself to do something you don't like for others!"

Lu An Ning didn't answer, but turned around and hugged him back, slowly tightening her grip, her heart filled with fulfillment.

Three days later, Lu Anning went to see the old dean's attending physician. The examination results were not ideal, but fortunately, the doctor found the root cause of the old dean's illness.

"There's a blood clot in the old man's brain, which might be the cause of his memory problems. Did he suffer a severe blow to the head before?"

Lu Anning frowned and shook his head, "I'm not sure. Can a condition like his recover through treatment?"

The doctor sighed softly, "It's not impossible to recover, but there aren't many good brain surgeons in Jiangcheng right now. The blood clot is in the wrong place, and the risk is too great. If you accidentally damage the nerves, you could become a vegetable. I know there's an internationally renowned brain specialist, but Professor Chu is too busy, so most people can't see him."

The hope that Lu Anning had finally seen was about to disappear again.

Back in the ward, Lu Anning looked at the old dean who was like a child, and his heart was filled with sadness.

Is it really the case that she can only go to the Lu family?

"Old Dean, do you really not remember who I am?"

The old dean looked at Lu Anning with a dull expression for a long time before saying, "Drink...drink some water!"

Lu Anning forced a smile, fed the old dean some water, and walked out of the hospital dejectedly. Looking at the passing cars, his eyes suddenly lit up.

How could she have forgotten that the old director used to keep records of every child's arrival at the orphanage? He couldn't remember, but if he could find the archives from back then, he might be able to find some clues.

It seems that she has to go to the orphanage again.
