Chapter 107 Overprotection is a double-edged sword
"Xia Mi, Xia Mi, did something happen to you?"
Jiang Shengmei knocked on the door and called Xia Mi at the top of her voice.
The snake's attention was distracted. It first turned its head to look in the direction of the gate, and then seemed to be hesitating whether to run.
Xia Mi didn't dare to speak, but frantically prayed in her heart, begging it to go away quickly.
Seeing no movement inside, the old couple outside the door became more nervous, and Jiang Weidong knocked on the door harder and harder.
"Or we can just break down the door. No normal person can sleep so soundly."
The louder the noise at the door, the more the snake stared at the direction of the door. Xia Mi could only hope that it would be scared away.
When Huo Jingchen was going up the hill, he saw someone banging on his door. It was too late and he couldn't see who the two people were.
"who?!"
Hearing Huo Jingchen's voice, Jiang Weidong said hurriedly, "Stop talking. Something seems to have happened to your wife. I knocked on your door seven or eight times but couldn't open it. Come and help us. Let's open it together!"
He hit it seven or eight times in a row and now his shoulder hurts.
As soon as he heard that Xia Mi was in trouble, Huo Jingchen rushed to the door of his house.
"It can't be broken open. I reinforced it before I left because I was worried about typhoons." Huo Jingchen explained, his voice trembling.
“…”
Jiang Weidong touched his aching shoulder and gasped.
After saying this, Huo Jingchen's mind started working rapidly. Soon, he looked at the wall next to him, took a few steps back, and suddenly rushed forward, easily climbing over the wall.
Before that, Jiang Weidong's banging on the door had successfully driven away the snake.
Just as Xia Mi was about to let down her guard and escape, she witnessed another, larger snake crawling out of the window from her floor.
She almost screamed again and bit the back of her hand so hard that her mouth was filled with the taste of rust.
The big snake had strange patterns on its body, which looked very eerie in the dark. Xia Mi was worried that if one snake crawled away, there would be another one, so she huddled in a corner and didn't dare to move.
Under the moonlight, Huo Jingchen climbed over the courtyard wall and stood under it to witness the snake crawling out of the room. His breathing stopped and his eyes were filled with worry and fear.
The snake disappeared quickly.
"Xia Mi."
Huo Jingchen knocked on the door, hating himself for reinforcing all the doors before leaving. He didn't expect that the person who was blocked would be him.
I didn't expect that reinforcement would also harm Xia Mi.
"Jing Chen?" Xia Mi was in a daze, thinking that she was frightened and had hallucinations.
Huo Jingchen walked into the yard, reached out to lift the curtain, and the bright moonlight poured into the room. In the moonlight, Huo Jingchen saw Xia Mi curled up in a small ball in the corner of the bed.
There were tears in the corners of her eyes, and her look at him was full of surprise.
"Don't be afraid, I'm back, open the door."
Huo Jingchen suddenly appeared beside the bed, which surprised and delighted Xia Mi. She almost thought that the snake had become a spirit.
After making sure there was no snake, she ran out of the room with a flashlight and opened the door.
Huo Jingchen has arrived at the door.
Xia Mi had been curled up for too long, and because she was frightened, her legs were so weak that she was about to fall as soon as the door opened.
Huo Jingchen steadily pulled the person into his arms and comforted him softly, "It's okay, I'm back, it's okay."
Xia Mi's cheek was pressed against Huo Jingchen's chest, and the strong heartbeat made her gradually regain a sense of security and sanity.
"There was a snake in my room just now, and there was more than one."
Under the silvery moonlight, Xia Mi's face was pale, her whole face exuded a morbid beauty, and her lips were trembling.
She didn't want to stay in the room because it was all dark and she couldn't see anything.
Afraid that another snake might jump out from somewhere.
Huo Jingchen coaxed her patiently, thinking that Jiang Weidong and Jiang Shengmei were still waiting outside, he comforted her for a while and then went to open the door.
Xia Mi sat in the yard, her brows furrowed, staring intently at the window without moving her eyes away.
Huo Jingchen opened the door.
"How is Xia Mi? What happened?"
Jiang Shengmei rushed into the yard in a hurry.
When Xia Mi heard the noise, she turned to look at Jiang Shengmei and Jiang Weidong, and this glance almost sent the old couple away.
Because of the fright, Xia Mi's face was pale and her lips were stained with blood. In the moonlight, the color of her lips darkened. Her hair was casually draped behind her shoulders and she was barefoot.
When Jiang Shengmei saw this, she was first frightened, then worried.
Xia Mi has always been quiet and doesn't talk much in front of others.
"The weather is hot, and snakes have found their way home. She said there was more than one. When I climbed in, I saw a big one running away."
Jiang Shengmei felt weak in the knees just by listening to it, and walked over to check on Xia Mi.
"I just heard your voice. As long as you're okay, it's good." Jiang Shengmei stroked Xia Mi's hair like an elder, murmuring.
Jiang Weidong frowned when he saw the people's situation.
"Why are you back? I didn't hear from you that you were coming back tonight."
Jiang Weidong asked Huo Jingchen.
"Things have been almost dealt with. I came back on the last ship." Huo Jingchen's eyes never left Xia Mi.
"I have avenged Captain Fu."
Huo Jingchen's voice was very soft, but these words were enough to make Jiang Weidong tremble.
"What did you say?"
"It's hard to explain in a few words. I'll explain in detail tomorrow."
It was bright outside, and Huo Jingchen discovered that there was a wound on the back of Xia Mi's hand.
Jiang Shengmei also noticed it, "How did your hand get like this? Come to my house quickly. Xiaoling brought back some disinfectant last time. I'll take you to get it bandaged."
Xia Mi gradually regained consciousness. She lowered her eyes and saw the wound on the back of her hand. She shook her head and refused.
"I still have purple medicine at home."
Seeing that both of them were wearing slippers, Captain Jiang was so flustered that he didn't even notice that he had put his coat on backwards.
"Sister-in-law, I'm fine. Now that Jingchen is back, you should go back and rest early."
"Okay, let's go back first. I still have realgar at home. I'll send you some tomorrow. Now that Jingchen is back, don't be afraid."
The moment Jiang Shengmei saw Xia Mi, she finally understood what it meant to be pitiful.
Xia Mi nodded and forced a smile, "Sister-in-law, I'm sorry to have disturbed your rest."
"What you said is wrong. We are neighbors. There is nothing to delay you. Just go to bed early." Jiang Shengmei advised worriedly, looking back every three steps.
"Yeah, don't be afraid, your Jingchen is an expert at catching snakes."
Jiang Shengmei felt something was wrong when she heard this, so she raised her hand and snapped, "What are you talking about? Go home and sleep."
After the two left, Xia Mi could still vaguely hear their conversation while sitting in the yard.
Huo Jingchen locked the door, then went into the house to find candles, lit three in total, and the room became brighter.
"Come in, I'll sleep in the study with you tonight."
Huo Jingchen squatted down and looked straight at the person sitting on the small stool, and their eyes met in the air.
"How did you get hurt?"
Xia Mi smelled blood and thought it was on the back of her hand. She looked down and found that there were scratches on Huo Jingchen's thigh and arm.
Huo Jingchen was puzzled and looked in the direction she was looking, only to find a cut on her thigh.
He was stunned. "It should be caused by the broken glass in the yard. It's not a big deal. Let's go in first."
The wound was not deep, but Xia Mi just didn't want Huo Jingchen to have any more scars.
Broken glass was piled against the wall for protection. Seeing the injuries on his body, she guessed that he had climbed over the wall.
