Chapter 9: Settlement of Accounts
"Of course I have to. My future son-in-law can't be bullied for nothing." Su Chunlin was ready to do something big.
The next day I went to Ximen Village in person.
Ding was chatting with a group of women at the entrance of the village. When she saw Su Chunlin passing by her quickly, she was stunned for a moment and jumped up on the spot, "Su Chunlin, you bastard, how dare you come to our village! Stop right there!"
Su Chunlin saw Ding from a distance, but he left so quickly because he didn't want to argue with her.
Mrs. Ding didn't expect that the more she shouted, the faster Su Chunlin ran. She thought that he was guilty and chased after him immediately.
Su Chunlin came to the Mo family and saw Mo Laotian as soon as he entered the door. Without saying a word, he rushed forward and punched Mo Laotian first.
Ding, who followed, screamed in fright.
Mo Laotian's wife and daughter heard the news and came out. Seeing Mo Laotian being beaten, they picked up their weapons and rushed over.
Su Chunlin grabbed Mo Laotian's collar angrily and roared, "Chen Ping is dead, that's right! But Liu Laosan and I are still alive, and Shen Yi is not an orphan without support!"
When Mo Laotian’s wife and daughter heard the name Shen Yi, their angry expressions instantly turned into guilty ones.
It took Guan a while to calm down, and she stepped forward to scold, "You can't hit people no matter what! Besides, our family has already made it clear to Shen Yi, and we gave him a bag of food. He didn't come to make trouble before, but now he comes here. Could it be that he thinks we didn't give him enough? This is too much!"
Mo Chunxiang nodded vigorously in response to Guan's words, and shouted loudly in dissatisfaction, "I was the one who insisted on canceling the marriage. I just don't like him, so what? If you have any problems, come to me, don't go to my parents!"
As she said that, Mo Chunxiang rushed over and pulled Mo Laotian behind her with all her strength, looking like "what can you do to me?"
Su Chunlin had come here with a purpose, but he didn't expect to hear such words. He was completely furious and shouted at Mo Chunxiang, "What are you doing here, little girl? Do you know what parents' orders and matchmaker's words mean? You have both parents, but you have no manners at all! How can a bag of grain repay the life-saving favor your father owes you?"
Mo Chunxiang had never been scolded or pointed at in her life. When she saw Su Chunlin's ferocious look, she was frightened and burst into tears.
Guan was so distressed that she stood in front of Mo Chunxiang like an old hen protecting her calves and pushed Su Chunlin out. "My family's affairs have nothing to do with you! You scold my daughter for being ill-mannered? Even if my daughter is ill-mannered, she is better than you raising a stupid daughter!"
Su Chunlin was furious. He pushed Guan aside and shouted at Mo Laotian, "Men's affairs don't need women to interfere. Mo Laotian, I'm here today and you must give the Shen family an explanation. Otherwise, I'm not afraid of those who wear shoes. Tomorrow I will go to the town and make a big fuss. I'll make you, Mo Laotian, famous in the surrounding area!"
"You are shameless!" Guan almost fainted from anger.
Mo Laotian's face turned pale. He knew they were in the wrong and did not care about his aching cheek. He asked Guan to take Mo Chunxiang back to the house, and then politely welcomed Su Chunlin into the house.
Seeing that Su Chunlin was about to run away, Mrs. Ding rushed out to stop him, "Stop! My son said that it was your stupid daughter who beat him up! You must give me an explanation for this matter!"
Su Chunlin narrowed his eyes and looked deeply at Ding. He didn't seem panicked at all, but his eyes made Ding feel uneasy.
She stepped back instinctively, but when she thought about this being Ximen Village, she regained her confidence, "Don't think I'm afraid of you just because you're a man! Anyway, if you don't give me an explanation today, don't even think about leaving Ximen Village!"
Su Chunlin suddenly laughed out loud, "What? Do you still want to arrest me?"
Mo Laotian hurriedly tried to smooth things over, "Brother Chunlin, don't be angry. We are all honest country folks and we wouldn't do anything illegal."
Upon hearing this, Ding snorted unwillingly, but showed no intention of backing down.
Su Chunlin laughed sarcastically and said, "I found it strange that so many young men came to your village that day. Later, my son said that Xiong Dao brought a group of people to beat him up, and many people saw it. You can't deny this! I didn't intend to make a fuss about it because he got his retribution. Since you insist on making a fuss, then we will report it to the police and let the town officials decide. If Xiong Dao's injuries were not caused by my daughter, I will never let this matter go!"
His ferocity and determination really frightened Ding and Mo Laotian.
Mo Laotian made a decision immediately and drove Ding away impatiently, "Alright, the situation that day was already very chaotic. You have asked so many families but couldn't find out the truth. You want to let the Su family girl take responsibility just because of your son's words. What are you dreaming about! Besides, the Su family girls don't work, how could they have the strength to hurt your son like that? You don't have a brain to find someone to punish you!"
Ding was not convinced, but she also knew that her husband was not at home and she would not gain any advantage if she stayed any longer, so she could only leave in disappointment.
After Mrs. Ding left, Su Chunlin put his hands behind his back, glanced at Mo Laotian calmly, and said thoughtfully, "I am here today, so I just want you to tell the Xiong family a message. Our Su family doesn't cause trouble, but we are not afraid of trouble. My eldest brother is not without any connections in the county. If the Xiong family can really produce evidence to prove that my daughter injured Xiong Dao, I will take responsibility for it! If they can't produce it and still dare to lie outside, don't blame me for confronting them! It's a good time to settle new and old grudges together."
Mo Chunxiang and her daughter, who were eavesdropping in the room, looked at each other, feeling frustrated, angry and helpless.
Mo Laotian smiled awkwardly and nodded continuously, "Brother Chunlin, about Shen Yi's matter."
Su Chunlin waved his hands and said, "It's your fault that you didn't teach your daughter well. I'm not here to listen to your troubles today. Who would break off the engagement just like that? That bag of grain can only be regarded as an apology to the Shen family. Can it be used to compensate for the life-saving grace you received back then?"
"No, no. Definitely not!" When talking about what happened that year, Mo Laotian looked embarrassed, but his attitude of admitting his mistake was quite sincere.
Seeing him like this, Su Chunlin's anger finally subsided a little. "If you can't, just remember it. Now everyone is in trouble. You can't pay it back even if you ask me to. I'll ask you one last time, are you really not going to get married to the Shen and Mo families?"
Mo Laotian's eyes were full of struggle. At this moment, there was a sound in the room. Mo Laotian sighed helplessly and nodded heavily, "No more!"
"Then don't regret it!" Su Chunlin turned away angrily without even looking at Mo Laotian.
As soon as he left, Guan's mother and daughter immediately ran out of the house.
Mo Chunxiang stamped her feet and gritted her teeth, pointing in the direction where Su Chunlin left and cursing, "If it weren't for my eldest brother, second brother, and Xiong Kai going to the Canglan River to fetch water, how could he be so rampant! I'm so angry, ah."
"That's right! Xiang'er, don't worry, his daughter is a fool. She must have known that Xiong Kai broke off the engagement with his daughter and immediately came back to discuss marriage with you, so she came to find fault. She said she was standing up for Shen Yi. Bah! Is he so kind? If he really wants to repay the favor, why doesn't he marry his daughter to Shen Yi!" The more Guan thought about it, the more she felt that she was right.
Even Mo Laotian looked as if he had suddenly realized something, and the depression in his heart suddenly dissipated.
