Chapter 13: Pig Disease, Adding Worse
Wen Zhenyi looked at the five pigs in the pigsty. Today they were slaughtering the last pig in the family. Now that the five pigs they bought were sick, they could no longer be sold.
Whether you make money or not by selling it is not a big deal, but it may even cost someone's life.
Ma Yinghe and the others were also extremely anxious, and this undoubtedly made the situation at home even worse.
They have to pay back fifteen taels of silver every month, which is not too much, but not too little either.
Old Lady Wen looked at the five pigs and sighed helplessly: "Chengwen, kill these five pigs and take them out of the village to find a place to burn them."
Wen Chengwen nodded and said, "I'll go now." Then he called Wen Yongnan and his brother over.
Old Lady Wen looked at Ma Yinghe again and said, "Yinghe, go find some quicklime powder."
Ma Yinghe nodded.
Wen Zhenyi looked at the old man Wen who lowered his head in frustration and said, "Grandpa, it's okay. We just need to be more careful next time."
When Old Man Wen heard her say this, he blamed himself even more. Not only did they not make any money this time, they also lost more than five taels of silver. What should they do?
Mrs. Wen took a deep breath, looked at the pigpen and said, "Old man, sell the land."
Old Man Wen opened his mouth to say something, but in the end he could only nod: "Okay."
"Grandma, a month is still early. Let's wait a little longer. If we haven't made enough money by the time the deadline comes, can we sell the land later?"
Old Lady Wen looked at her and reached out to touch her head: "Yi Yi, if we don't sell the land, we won't be able to do our butcher business."
"Grandma, don't I have cooking skills?"
Old Lady Wen didn't want her to be so tired. She had already seen that her body was not fully recovered this morning, so how could she bear to let her work so hard? "Grandma, think about it again."
Old Man Wen and Wen Chengwen and the others took all the pigs out and killed them, then started cleaning the pigpen. They also had to bury the manure deep down so that it could not be used anymore.
Wen Zhenyi went to help boil water to flush the pigpen, which also served to disinfect and sterilize it.
On the other side, when Shen Hanxing returned to the private school, Shen Xiucai went to the canteen to get a bowl of rice and gave him half.
Shen Hanxing ate a rare mouthful of rice and a few bites of dishes today, which made Shen Xiucai very happy.
You have to know that this child hasn't eaten for a long time. Every day he either drinks a few mouthfuls of porridge or some rice soup. He is so worried that his hair is almost falling out.
"Han Xing, are these dishes delicious?"
Shen Hanxing nodded: “Very special.”
Shen Xiucai tried to ask: "If you eat this kind of food every day, do you have an appetite?"
Shen Hanxing looked at the remaining food in the bowl and was silent for a moment: "I don't know."
Mr. Shen made up his mind. He would go to the Wen family to discuss it tomorrow. He would pay for them to prepare some food for his grandson every day.
Shen Hanxing didn't care about his grandfather's thoughts. He lowered his head and thought about Wen Zhenyi whom he had seen in the past two days.
Although they lived in the same village, they rarely saw her. Usually, her family would not let her go out, fearing that she would be in danger or bullied.
In the past thirteen years, the villagers have seen her only a few times, but when they saw her these past two days, she didn't look like a fool at all.
The grandfather and grandson each had their own concerns.
The commotion at the Wen family's end was so loud that it alarmed the surrounding neighbors, who all looked towards their yard cautiously.
"Grandma Yongnan, what's going on in your family?" Grandma Zhou Chunhua from the Zhou family next door was standing at their door, cracking melon seeds and looking inside.
Old Lady Wen looked up at the door and said, "Nothing serious. Someone just ordered five pigs, so we slaughtered them and sent them over."
"Wow! Your business is really growing." Zhou came closer mysteriously and said, "I heard your granddaughter went to town to cook today?"
"Kids, after all, just love playing house and stuff."
Zhou spat out melon seed shells from her mouth and said with saliva flying, "You're playing house? I heard that you can make money."
Old Lady Wen saw the melon seed shells scattered all over the ground, and she looked a little unhappy: "It's just that these villagers felt sorry for my family and showed their support."
"Tsk tsk tsk, I won't say anything. We've been neighbors for so many years. If you have a way to make money, take our Zhou Da with you."
"Bang!" A wooden basin was thrown at Zhou's feet without warning.
Zhou was startled and was about to curse when she saw Wen Zhen looking at her with a sinister look. She felt a little scared when she was looked at like that and stepped back unconsciously. She tripped over the threshold and fell to the ground.
Old Lady Wen looked at Wen Zhenyi. This girl was being naughty again, but she still pretended to care for Zhou who was sitting on the ground: "Grandma Chunhua, please get up quickly. It's cold sitting on the ground. Don't get sick later."
Zhou helped her stand up with her hand. There were still melon seed shells on her lips, and she couldn't speak clearly: "She...she..."
Old Lady Wen looked at her and pointed at Wen Zhenyi: "Don't mind it, our girl is shy."
Zhou looked at Wen Zhenyi and said, "Sister-in-law, she's already like this. Why don't you send her to the temple? She's really scary!"
Old Lady Wen immediately shook her hand off, her face turning ugly. She snorted coldly, "I gave you face, didn't I? What does my girl's condition have to do with you? Am I eating your rice?"
Wen Zhenyi felt very warm in his heart when he saw the old man standing in front of him and protecting him.
After saying this, Old Lady Wen pulled Wen Zhenyi back to the yard and closed the gate with a bang.
Zhou stood outside the yard with a confused look on her face. She looked at the closed gate and spat, "What a crap! You deserve to live a poor life." Then she turned around and walked home.
Ma Yinghe and the others saw that Old Lady Wen looked unhappy: "Mom, what's wrong?"
"It's okay. Kill the pig quickly and take it out. Tell everyone that someone else ordered it. Don't let anyone know."
Wen Chengwen nodded: "Mom, I understand."
Wen Zhenyi watched as the pigs were pulled out: "Grandma, why did you say that someone else ordered it?"
“There aren’t many families raising pigs in the village, but there are some out there. If others knew our pigs were sick, they’d have to ask us for compensation if their own pigs got sick too.”
Wen Zhenyi thought about it and agreed, but now she had to think about what to do next. There would be neither pork nor offal tomorrow.
She could only try to make some other food.
There are many things to eat in spring, and there is no shortage of ingredients. Now we just have to figure out what to cook.
The yard was washed clean and everyone in the family went out to roast the pig, leaving her alone at home. She simply sat on a stool and thought about what to cook for tomorrow while it was still early and she could go buy some.
Eating spring rolls is a good choice in spring. There are many kinds of vegetables here, and the spring rolls made here are rich in content.
