Chapter 198: Pig Prices Rise

Chapter 198: Pig Prices Rise

Lu'e felt guilty, but it was too late to make amends. She could only turn around and call Wen Zhenyi: "Miss Wen, Madam asks you to go out for a while."

Wen Zhen nodded and said to Meng Caidie and the other two, "Go on and do as I just taught you."

The three nodded. Although they had many questions in their minds, they had no way to speak and could only turn around and continue to complete their own tasks.

Wen Zhenyi walked to Madam Meng's side: "Madam, you are looking for me."

Madam Meng looked at her and smiled faintly: "Can you walk with me?"

"certainly."

Mrs. Meng walked out of the kitchen yard with her and headed towards the garden.

Wen Zhenyi followed her and found that the maids were not following her, only the two of them, so he knew that she had something to say to him.

Madam Meng looked at the girl next to her who was two years younger than her daughter and said, "Miss Wen, you didn't say this on a whim today, did you?"

"You can say it was a spur of the moment thing, or you can say it was purposeful."

"What is your purpose?"

"Let them live better in the future."

Madam Meng was slightly stunned and looked at Wen Zhenyi: "What do you mean?"

"I don't know if your backyard is quiet, but other people's backyards may not be so quiet. Although I don't want to use my own petty mind to speculate about others, it's always better to be on guard."

A hint of sadness flashed in Mrs. Meng's eyes. The women in this deep house had all changed from being innocent and naive to being scheming.

She had also walked this path step by step. At first she hated and resented, but in the end she let it go.

Wen Zhenyi saw the sadness in her eyes and knew that the Meng family's residence was not as harmonious as it seemed. "All I can tell them are some taboos on food ingredients. I can't help them much with medicinal herbs."

Mrs. Meng understood what she meant: "I'll ask someone. Thank you for today."

"Mrs. Meng, you're too polite. They are my friends, and I don't want them to be hurt one day."

Madam Meng sighed deeply: "In this world, it is inevitable for a woman to be free from harm."

Wen Zhenyi didn't say anything else. There were some things she couldn't change, but she hoped they could live a better life in the future.

Madam Meng looked at Wen Zhenyi and said, "Miss Wen, please come to our house more often when you have time."

"Okay, I'll come when I'm free."

"Go back, they should all be waiting for you. There's no need to tell them about the conversation just now."

"I know." Wen Zhenyi turned around and went back to the kitchen.

When Meng Caidie and the others saw Wen Zhenyi coming back, they quickly came over and asked, "Yiyi, what did my mother want to talk to you about?"

"Nothing, I just want me to take some time to teach you cooking."

"We would like to learn from you, but you are too busy and we don't have the chance."

Wen Zhenyi took a look at the ice jelly they made and said: "Alright, let it sit like this. After it solidifies, just make some brown sugar water. If you have rose sugar or osmanthus sugar at home, you can add it when cooking the sugar water. It will also taste good."

"We have osmanthus candy. I'll get it out when we make the syrup later."

"Let's go, let's go play in the backyard and don't disturb the cooks."

Lu'e looked at her gratefully, then turned to deal with other things.

Back in the back garden, the three of them started chattering again.

Wen Zhenyi looked at the three people in front of him: "Promise me one thing."

The three of them turned to look at her curiously: "What's the matter?"

"No matter what happens in the future, live well. Only when you live can you have hope. Even if you feel hopeless, don't have thoughts of suicide."

Lei Yingying looked at the other two, then at her: "Yi Yi, why are you saying this for no reason?"

"I just hope that everyone is well, and that we can see each other again one day, even after we get married and have children."

"Of course. We should write to each other often and tell you everything I'm happy and sad about." Meng Caidie said with a smile.

"Yeah, we will write to you even if we get married. You are not allowed to find us annoying then." Song Huanhuan blinked mischievously.

"No, you can tell me whether you are happy or unhappy. Don't hide it in your heart. When I have time, I will come to see you."

Meng Caidie smiled and teased her, "After you get married, I'm afraid you won't have the chance to travel around anymore."

"Won't."

"Really?" Song Huanhuan was a little unconvinced.

"You'll know when the time comes." Wen Zhenyi didn't say anything else.

The four of them talked about a lot of things, and most of the time three of them were talking while Wen Zhenyi was listening. They also learned that their fathers all had concubines.

There are also quite a few illegitimate sons and daughters, but their relationship is not good and they are not willing to mention it in public.

When it was almost time for dinner, the maid came over and invited them to have dinner.

Here she met Meng Caidie's three half-sisters. They were somewhat timid. The oldest was eight years old and the youngest was five years old.

When they saw Meng Caidie, they called out softly, "Sister."

Meng Caidie nodded softly.

Mrs. Meng asked them to sit down and eat. In wealthy families, men and women ate separately, so she did not see Mayor Meng and his other illegitimate sons.

"Miss Wen, I don't know if the food in the mansion suits your taste."

"I'm not picky about food."

Mrs. Meng smiled and nodded, then started eating.

During the meal, no one spoke, and only the occasional sound of dishes and chopsticks colliding could be heard.

After finally getting through dinner time, a maid came in and said, "Miss Wen, the master wants you to go to the front hall to talk."

Wen Zhen stood up and said to Madam Meng and the others, "Madam Meng, I'm leaving now that I've finished chatting with Mayor Meng. I won't be coming in to say goodbye to you."

Meng Caidie and the others were reluctant to see her leave so early: "Wouldn't you like to play a little longer?"

"I can't play much longer. My shop has been closed for four days. I have to open it tomorrow no matter what. I have to go back and clean up and prepare some materials."

"Next time you are free, come and play with me."

"Okay." After saying that, she bowed and went out, following the maid to the front hall.

Mayor Meng has looked much more haggard recently. He was sitting in the hall drinking tea. When he saw her, he raised his hand and motioned her to sit on a chair beside him.

Wen Zhenyi sat down gracefully, and the maid brought her a cup of tea. "I wonder why the mayor wants me here?"

Mayor Meng put down his cup and wiped the tea stains from his beard. "The pigs will be delivered tomorrow, but they're much more expensive than we thought."

"How many?"

"A full-grown pig costs three taels of silver. I only want ten. You also want ten piglets. Each costs one tael of silver. The price is too high, so I didn't dare ask for more."
