Chapter 4: Wood Ash
The three people in the kitchen saw Wen Zhenyi standing at the door and felt a little annoyed. Why were they so busy talking that they didn't notice her standing outside the door?
Old Lady Wen looked at her and said, "Yiyi, this is an adult matter, you little kid shouldn't get involved."
Wen Chengwen nodded quickly: "Yes, dad is still here."
Wen Zhenyi walked into the kitchen and squatted beside them, looking at the smelly pig offal: "Grandma, let me try, if it doesn't work, we can sell it again."
Old Lady Wen saw Wen Zhenyi looking at her coquettishly, and nodded as if possessed by a spirit: "Okay, if not, we are selling the land. It will only take a few days."
Wen Zhenyi smiled and squatted down, looking at the pig offal in the basin. The reason why no one eats the pig offal here is simply because it is very troublesome to handle.
No matter how you clean it, there will always be a smell.
Seeing that her mother-in-law had agreed, Ma Yinghe could only let her go: "Yiyi, whatever you want to do, mother will help you."
Wen Chengwen also spoke up: "Dad can help too."
Wen Zhenyi thought about what was needed to process the sewage. Flour was basically not available in today's homes, but vinegar, ginger and onions were available.
She turned around and saw the wood ash in the stove. Isn't this a ready-made thing to remove odors?
The three people at home watched her walk around the kitchen and bring over a lot of things, and they all looked at her curiously what she was going to do.
Under the watchful eyes of the three people, Wen Zhenyi prepared to cut off the various parts of the pig's offal and process them separately.
When Wen Chengwen saw his daughter was about to use a knife, he hurried over and said, "Yi Yi, let Dad do it. Don't let your hands get dirty."
"Yes, yes, let your father come." Ma Yinghe quickly pulled her up, not wanting her to touch the smelly thing.
Wen Zhenyi had no choice but to command with his mouth: "Dad, separate them carefully, especially the gallbladder. Don't break it, otherwise this pig offal will be bitter."
Wen Chengwen nodded: "Don't worry, your father's knife skills are pretty good." Then he separated all these things with swift hands and feet.
He picked up the intact gallbladder in his hand and said, "Yi Yi, do you want the gallbladder?"
Wen Zhenyi thought about it and realized that pig gallbladder can be used to wash hair, remove dandruff and relieve itching, and is also useful for hair loss caused by fungal infections: "Dad, put it aside for now and deal with it later."
Old Mrs. Wen took out a bowl and asked Wen Chengwen to put the gallbladder aside.
Wen Zhen pointed at something and said, "Put the pig's heart in water and squeeze it continuously to drain the blood out."
Old Lady Wen took the pig heart directly, put it in the basin and went to the well in the yard: "I'll do this."
Ma Yinghe looked at the basin and saw that there was still a lot of food left. "What's left?"
"Mom, pick out the fascia on the pig liver and soak it in some vinegar for an hour. Rinse the pig lungs until they turn white. Poke some small holes in them to separate the blood vessels and clean them. Then rub them with wood ash."
Ma Yinghe listened carefully to what Wen Zhenyi said and prepared to take both things outside to wash them.
Wen Zhenyi looked at the remaining pig kidneys, large intestines, small intestines, and pig stomach, all of which were difficult to clean: "Dad, this may be a bit more difficult."
Wen Chengwen smiled innocently: "It's okay, go ahead."
"Cut the pork kidney from the side and then remove the membrane on top, otherwise it will have a strange smell."
Wen Chengwen carefully cut open the pig kidney and realized what she meant by the smelly membrane: "Is that right?"
"By the way, Dad is really awesome."
Wen Chengwen smiled a little embarrassedly: "Is this all right?"
"Just clean it up."
Wen Chengwen put the pig kidney aside and saw the other things in the basin. To be honest, he was not willing to clean them up. Not only was it troublesome, but it was also difficult to clean them thoroughly.
Wen Zhenyi went to the stove and shoveled a lot of wood ash into the basin. He stopped only when he saw that it was almost done.
Wen Chengwen looked at the ash in the basin: "Yi Yi, what are you doing?"
"Dad, this will get rid of the odor. Rub this stuff on your hands."
Wen Chengwen began to carefully rub the contents of the basin with his large hands as soon as he heard this: "Can this really remove the odor?"
"Actually, the bad smell comes from the fat in the intestines and stomach, but the outside also needs to be cleaned."
"Ah! How do we clean the inside?"
"This is easy. I'll tell you later." Wen Zhenyi saw that he had rubbed it almost thoroughly, so he asked him to stop, poured clean water from the bucket next to him, and asked him to clean the contents of the basin.
Wen Chengwen looked at the cleaned intestines and stomach: "It seems the smell is not so strong anymore."
"Dad, let's turn them over now."
Wen Chengwen looked at the intestines in his hand and was a little confused for a moment. How should he turn it over?
Wen Zhenyi got started right away: "Like this, start by flipping it in from the top." Then he looked at Wen Chengwen next to him: "Dad, help me add some water in."
Wen Chengwen picked up the ladle from the bucket and carefully added water into the intestines.
After a while, he saw that the intestines were quickly moving inwards due to the water, and soon they had turned over: "That's pretty fast."
Wen Zhenyi turned the pig's stomach over again and added wood ash into the basin again.
The father and daughter rubbed the contents of the basin again and began to clean the grease inside.
The grease ripped off easily.
Wen Chengwen looked at the torn-off oil and asked, "Is this what's causing the stench?"
"Well, as long as the grease is removed, the sewage will basically have no odor."
Old Lady Wen and Ma Yinghe also came to help. The four of them quickly cleaned up the grease on the surface, cleaned it with clean water, and even got close to smell it.
"It's really tasteless." Ma Yinghe looked at her in surprise.
"Yes, there is no smell at all." Old Mrs. Wen sniffed it carefully.
Wen Chengwen looked at the cleaned pig offal and said: "Even if it is clean, it won't sell for much money!"
After hearing the truth about the old lady, she kicked him and said, "If you can't speak, don't speak."
Ma Yinghe also rolled her eyes at her man.
Wen Zhenyi knew they were afraid of hitting her, but she had no intention of simply selling pig offal. How much money could it be worth? The real money had to be made from the food.
"Dad, I'm not asking you to sell pig offal."
Wen Chengwen was so glared at by his mother and wife that he dared not speak and could only look at her with grievance.
Old Lady Wen seemed to have thought of something: "Yi Yi, are you going to make food?"
"Grandma is the best. She guessed it right the first time."
"But pig offal is usually eaten by common people like us as a snack, so I'm afraid it won't sell for much money."
"It's okay, we'll know after we try it." Wen Zhenyi still couldn't believe that he, a cooking god, couldn't conquer your stomachs.
