Chapter 61 Master Gives Gifts
Ma Can didn't want to force her, but she had to be good at one of needlework and cooking, otherwise it would be difficult for her to get married in the future.
Wen Zhenyi looked at him and smiled, "There's a saying that goes 'more skills are better than less.' I haven't asked you to reach the standard of an embroiderer, but at least your needlework should be acceptable."
"Cousin, can you?"
"I can do simple embroidery, but I can't do complicated embroidery."
"Hey! Since you already know how to cook, I'll go back and learn it." Then he looked at her and said, "Can I learn cooking from you?"
"Learning cooking is no easier than learning needlework."
"I didn't expect you to be like this. Just teach me some home cooking."
"That's fine. When you're free, come over and I'll teach you."
"That's great! From now on, I can make whatever I want to eat myself."
Geng Ru brought out the dishes and placed them on the table: "I've been talking for so long, just to satisfy my own appetite!"
"Mom, this is called not asking for help."
"That's a good idea." Old man Ma smiled and stroked his beard.
Ma Ruier moved closer to him: "I can also make delicious food for grandpa."
“That’s fine.”
The Ma family stayed here for another day, and on the third day they had to set off back to the county town. It would take them most of the day to walk to the county town, and they also had to return the carriage.
Old Mrs. Wen asked Wen Chengwen to load all the cloth she bought for them onto the carriage, and also took out a lot of bacon hanging in the house and asked them to take it back.
Old Lady Ma looked at the things stuffed in the carriage and asked, "What are you doing?"
"It's a rare visit for you, so we don't have anything to give you. These are the leftovers from when we slaughtered the pigs at home. Please don't be disgusted."
"You call this nothing? Look at all the cloth and bacon, as if we're just here to beg for something."
Old Lady Wen gave her a sidelong glance: "What are you talking about?"
Ma Ruier looked at Wen Zhenyi reluctantly: "Cousin, you must come to the county town to play with us when you have time."
"Okay, I'll definitely go when I'm free. I've made popcorn and potato chips for you in the car, both spicy and salt and pepper. Take some back and share with your friends."
Geng Ru patted her head and said, "Yiyi, don't be too tired. Take some time to go to the county town to visit your grandparents and us."
"Aunt, I know how to do it. There's chili oil in the jar."
Old Man Ma looked at Old Man Wen and said, "Father-in-law, we are leaving now. If you have time, you can stay in the county town for a few days."
"Okay, we'll go when we're free."
Wen Zhenyi and the others escorted them to the village entrance and watched the carriage disappear from sight: "It left so suddenly, it feels a lot quieter."
Old Lady Wen sighed, "That's right. It used to be so lively, but now the house feels empty again."
Ma Yinghe and her friends started to get busy as soon as they got home. They took off the sheets and went to the river to wash and dry them.
Wen Zhenyi and his three children are responsible for cleaning the house. They should go to the stall tomorrow. It has been almost five days since they last went.
Wen Yongnan took out all the bedding and placed them on the rack in the yard to dry.
Wen Yongman took a broom to help sweep the floor.
Wen Zhenyi took a rag and began to clean the house and kitchen inside and out.
"Is anyone home?"
Wen Yongnan heard the sound coming from the courtyard gate, put down the bedding in his hand, opened the courtyard gate, and looked at the servant standing at the door: "Aren't you Master Cheng's servant?"
"Mr. Wen has a good memory, just like me."
"What brings you here today?"
"It's like this. My master asked me to send some thank you gifts to thank Miss Wen for the food she prepared on the birthday banquet."
Wen Yongnan looked at the people behind him, all of whom were carrying a lot of things in their hands: "Come in and sit down first."
"Excuse me."
Wen Yongnan shouted towards the kitchen: "Yi Yi, come out for a moment."
Wen Zhenyi was still holding a rag in his hand. When he heard Wen Yongnan's voice, he came out of the kitchen. Seeing the people in the yard, he was not too surprised: "Why are you here?"
"Miss Wen, I'm here with our master to give him a thank you gift."
"Thank you gift?" Wen Zhenyi looked at the things in their hands and saw that they had quite a lot of things.
"Yes, it's a thank-you gift for the birthday banquet. The master knew you had guests at home these past two days, so he waited until today to let me bring it to you."
Wen Zhenyi looked at the things in their hands and said, "You are not just here to give me a thank you gift!"
The servant smiled and said, "Miss Wen is indeed very clever. It is our master who wants to meet Miss Wen and thank her in person."
"when?"
"At noon today, please invite Miss Wen and her family to come to the Cheng Mansion for a simple meal."
Wen Yongnan frowned and looked at the servant.
Wen Zhenyi probably guessed what Mr. Cheng wanted to do, but since he had invited her so kindly, she decided not to waste his kindness.
"Okay, we'll be there on time at noon. Just take these thank-you gifts back. I've already received the compensation I deserve."
The servant was a little embarrassed: "This..."
"Just answer truthfully. I believe your master is a reasonable man."
The servant could only bow and say: "Okay, then I will wait for Miss Wen and her family at the mansion gate at noon." As he said that, he led his men out of the yard.
Wen Yongman watched them leave and said, "Sister, why did Master Cheng invite us to dinner?"
"I don't know. Won't you find out when you get there?"
Wen Yongnan was a little worried: "Yi Yi, do you really want to go?"
"Brother, are you worried?"
"Well, the Cheng family is a powerful family after all. We are just ordinary farmers. It feels like they are cheating when they suddenly invite us to dinner."
"Fraud. Probably not, but there could be something else."
"What could it be?"
"We'll find out when we get there, and it'll save us from having to make lunch today."
Wen Yongman pouted: "I don't think the food will be delicious."
Wen Zhenyi reached out and pinched his cheek: "You're still picky about food now."
"It's your fault that I have such a spoiled appetite. What should I do in the future?" Wen Yongman said pretending to be sad.
Wen Yongnan looked at his younger brother, his mouth twitching a little: "Okay, go to work."
When Old Lady Wen and the others came back, she knew they were going to the Cheng residence for lunch, so she changed into cleaner and newer clothes.
Wen Chengwen drove the ox cart out: "We are going to the Cheng Mansion for dinner. Should we bring anything?"
Ma Yinghe was also a little unsure: "I don't think we need it. We don't seem to have anything to bring."
Old Man Wen was also a little worried: "Is it appropriate to go empty-handed?"
Old Mrs. Wen also fell into deep thought. Mr. Cheng had everything he needed, so what gifts could they give him?
"Grandpa and grandma, don't think too much. Mr. Cheng doesn't need these small things we give him." Wen Zhenyi was quite open-minded.
"Is it okay to go like this?" Old Mrs. Wen was still a little worried.
