Chapter 94 Drunk Shen Xiucai
Old Lady Wen rolled her eyes at him and said, "As if this mop was your idea."
Old Man Wen touched his nose and said, "I am just benefiting from my granddaughter's influence."
Wen Zhenyi looked at the two of them with amusement, then turned to look at Wen Chengwen: "Dad, go make the sign."
"Oh, that's right. After all the commotion today, I forgot about the signboard. I'll tell you now." As he said that, he handed the broom in his hand to Ma Yinghe and walked outside.
"Yi Yi, what's the name of the shop?" Old Mrs. Wen looked at Wen Zhenyi with some curiosity.
"Wenji Breakfast."
"That's a good name." Old Man Wen said with a smile.
Wen Zhenyi really didn't think much of the name, he was just too lazy to think about it.
The servants in the Cheng Mansion were all very quick and efficient. In just half a day, they had cleaned the store inside and out, and put all the things they had moved in back to their proper places.
When Wen Yongnan and the others came back in the afternoon, they didn’t ask much, probably because they had already heard about it from Shen Hanxing.
Mr. Shen was still in a bad mood today. It was only after Old Man Wen drank a few glasses of wine with him that he told him the reason.
"Brother Wen, you don't know, I think these kids feel bad when they leave the private school."
Old Man Wen looked puzzled: "What's wrong?"
"We have no money and can't go to school. These children are very serious and hardworking." Shen Xiucai picked up the glass and took another sip of wine, feeling extremely regretful.
Wen Zhenyi looked at Shen Hanxing: "Brother Shen, what's going on?"
"There were several students in the private school who had to end their studies due to family reasons, and my grandfather felt very bad."
"Is there no money left?"
"Well, there are a few who aren't doing well academically, and their families think they have no hope of passing the imperial examinations. There are also some whose families are in financial difficulty and can no longer afford to support them."
"But for them, even if they can't pass the imperial examinations, being an accountant or a shopkeeper should be enough."
"You're right. At least life won't be too difficult in the future."
"Studying doesn't necessarily lead to passing exams and gaining a degree; it simply helps one better distinguish right from wrong."
"I agree with that." Shen Hanxing moved closer to her and whispered, "It's just that my grandfather always thinks it's a pity that I don't take the imperial examination."
Wen Zhenyi turned her head to look at him and blinked her beautiful eyes: "It wouldn't hurt to try it when you feel better."
“Okay.” Chen Hanxing did not refuse, but agreed with a smile: “Will you still open the store tomorrow?”
"I told my customers tomorrow that I'll be closed for a day. I just moved here and haven't had time to buy ingredients yet."
"It's good to have a day off, otherwise I'm busy from morning till night every day."
"Don't you think this kind of life is fulfilling?"
“It’s very fulfilling, but also very tiring.”
Wen Zhenyi smiled but said nothing. She had experienced times in her previous life when things were even more tiring than this. In order to get closer to a goal, she would spend a long time studying all of his living habits, trying to hit the target in one shot. Back then, she was much more tired than now.
After Shen Xiucai drank some wine and listened to the old man's advice for a while, his mood improved a lot.
"Brother Wen, if nothing had happened to my uncle, you might have become a scholar like me, and you might have gone further than me."
Old Man Wen smiled and waved his hands: "It's fine now."
Mr. Shen looked at the whole family, smiled and nodded, but a look of loneliness flashed across his eyes.
Seeing that he had almost finished drinking, Shen Hanxing helped him up and went back to the private school together.
Wen Yongnan and Wen Yongman still had homework to do, so they went back to the private school after dinner.
Shen Xiucai walked unsteadily, and his voice was a little drunken: "Han Xing! I wish I had not let your father take the exam back then."
Shen Hanxing supported his hand: “Grandpa, what does this have to do with you? This is his own choice.”
Shen Xiucai waved his hands, feeling even more sad. "It's my fault. I was vain and thought your father could go further, so I asked him to take the exam. If he hadn't gone, you wouldn't have lost your parents at such a young age."
Chen Hanxing sighed deeply. Over the years, he had already forgotten what they looked like. When he occasionally remembered them, it was just a vague outline.
It’s just that grandpa always blames himself and takes all the blame on himself.
When he returned to the private school, Mr. Shen was already extremely drunk and kept muttering that it was his fault.
Shen Hanxing helped him lie down on the bed, took off his shoes and socks, covered him with a thin blanket, fetched a basin of water to wash him clean, and sat beside his bed.
He saw tears in the corners of Shen Xiucai's eyes, raised his hand and wiped the tears from his eyes with his fingers: "Grandpa, after so many years, you still haven't gotten over it."
Shen Xiucai said dazedly, "I can't get over it. Every time I see you eating less and less, my heart feels like it's being cut by a knife. It's all my fault."
"I eat a lot now, and I'll eat more in the future, so let it go."
Mr. Shen nodded randomly, the corners of his lips slightly raised, revealing a smile.
Chen Hanxing pulled a thin blanket over him and didn't plan to go back to his room to sleep. He simply spent the night on the soft couch in his room so that he could take care of him at night.
After finishing their meal, Old Man Wen and the others prepared to go back before the city gates were closed.
"Grandpa, grandma, you should stay in town today. It's so late, it's not safe for you to go back." Wen Zhenyi was worried about the two of them going back so late at night.
Old Man Wen's face flushed: "I have to go back to mop."
"Grandpa, it's the same if you go back early tomorrow morning. It won't take up a whole night."
"Yes! Dad, even if you are anxious, there is no need to rush for one night. It is not too late to go back tomorrow." Ma Yinghe also advised.
Old Lady Wen knew they cared about her, and since it was already getting dark, she said, "Okay, let's stay in town for one night and go to bed early tomorrow morning."
"I'll make the bed for you." Ma Yinghe smiled and went to the room to make the bed for the two of them.
The next day.
It was a rare day that they didn't have to get up early, so they were happy to sleep in.
It was drizzling when I got up, and the sky was gray, which made me feel a little depressed.
Old Lady Wen looked at the rain falling from the sky and said, "I'm afraid it will rain all day long."
"It doesn't matter even if it takes the whole day. You can stay in town. There isn't much to do in the fields recently." Wen Chengwen came out of the room.
"I always feel uneasy when there is no one at home, so I have to go back and check on him."
Wen Zhenyi stretched and prepared to go to the kitchen to make a simple breakfast, as he would have Wen Chengwen take it to the private school later.
Mrs. Wen couldn't stay idle and came to the kitchen to help: "Yi Yi, what are you going to do today?"
"Let's keep it simple in the morning."
"Okay." After saying that, Mrs. Wen looked outside the kitchen and saw Zhu Tao going to the hall to clean.
