Chapter 177 Ah, my brother!!!
Chang Zhiyuan sneered inwardly upon hearing this. This group of people had come specifically for the two women, and had attacked them nearly three times along the way, with each attack involving more people than the last. If he hadn't been alert and sent people away beforehand the first two times, they would all be dead.
If they really wanted to spare their lives, they wouldn't have attacked them three times before. The person behind this must have been afraid that they would find out something, so the order must have been to kill them all.
Nobody believes throwing someone out will save their life. Aren't there countless cases of murder to cover up crimes? Do they really think they're fools?
They're not far from Taiyuan now, and they're attacking them in broad daylight. There must be someone in Taiyuan they fear, which is why they're surrounding them without any regard for the consequences.
If they were handed over, they would certainly not survive, but if they were protected well, given the identities of these two girls, perhaps someone could come to their rescue.
Having figured things out, Chang Zhiyuan looked at He Sheng: "We're not far from Taiyuan, and it's still daytime. If we alert the city defenses, they won't survive. Let's hold on a little longer. We're on the main road. As long as someone discovers we're being surrounded and alerts the city defenses, we'll be saved!!!"
The burly man at the head of the group said with a dark face, "You won't listen to reason, so you'll have to suffer the consequences! Kill them all!!! Leave no one alive!!"
As they spoke, the group surrounded them again. In the end, they were outnumbered. The bodyguards held out for a while, but they were starting to tire. Each of them had to hold off at least two or three people, which was a lot of pressure.
Before long, several people took advantage of the opportunity and rushed towards Chang Zhiyuan and He Sheng. Chang Zhiyuan waved his stick and tried to repel the attackers.
But being a scholar, he was easily defeated when his staff was knocked away with a single blow. The four men turned pale, and being unarmed, they had no chance against the intruders.
Seeing this, Uncle Liu shook off the two men and turned around to protect Chang Zhiyuan and He Sheng.
"Young master, are you alright?"
Chang Zhiyuan's face was only slightly pale, but he was not injured. He shook his head and said, "Uncle Liu, we're fine."
The circle was missing a gap, and the others stood in the middle to protect the group.
As the formation fell apart, people began to get injured. With more and more people charging in, a burly man attacked He Sheng directly. Uncle Liu and Uncle Chen shielded He Sheng tightly behind them and blocked the attack.
However, Chang Zhiyuan and the two girls were exposed to this group of people.
Three burly men instantly surrounded him, their snow-white knives aimed straight at Chang Zhiyuan.
Su Mingshu, standing behind Chang Zhiyuan, cried out, "Young Master Chang!!! Be careful! Get out of the way!"
But the man rushed up too fast, and Chang Zhiyuan couldn't dodge at all. He could only watch helplessly as the knife came straight for his chest.
"Holy crap! Bro!!!"
Lin Changning, who had just approached, looked at the face that was exactly the same as his own and, without thinking, threw the sword in his hand away.
The sword accurately deflected the knife that was aimed at Chang Zhiyuan's chest. Before the assassin could even react, his weapon was out of his hand.
Chang Zhiyuan was startled and instinctively looked into the woods.
Before he could even think about how his younger brother had snatched a sword from Lu Shan's hand, he rushed out.
Lin Changning cut down two people with just two or three strikes, and the people who were surrounding him were stunned when they saw the uninvited guest rushing out.
Several of them glanced at Lin Changning, then at Chang Zhiyuan. As Lin Changning felled several more skilled fighters, they abandoned Chang Zhiyuan and turned their attacks towards Lin Changning.
Lu Shan and his men arrived from behind the woods and immediately helped Lin Changning surround the group. As more and more soldiers emerged from the woods, the leader of the men felt a chill run down his spine.
The sudden appearance of so many soldiers... it's probably a trap!
They were just doing their jobs for money, and would never have anything to do with the soldiers unless absolutely necessary. Seeing that more and more people were coming, the leader of the men quickly gave an order.
"Retreat! There's an ambush!"
As he spoke, he prepared to lead his men on horseback to retreat, but Lin Changning, holding up his long sword, sneered: "Trying to run? Do you think you can escape?"
After saying that, he grabbed his knife and charged toward the one who seemed to be the leader. He slashed the horse's leg, and before the leader could react, he fell off the horse.
Just as he was about to get up, a snow-white longsword was pressed against his neck.
"Run! Why have you stopped running?!"
Lin Changning asked through gritted teeth in a sinister tone.
The man turned around and found that all the skilled men he had brought were surrounded by a group of soldiers: "Don't worry about me, run if you can."
Lin Changning reached out and dislocated the man's jaw: "Shut up! Lu Shan! Anyone who runs away will have to go back and get a beating!!!"
Lu Shan kicked a man to the ground: "Understood, Commander!"
After saying that, he ordered the men he had brought to tie up the group of men one by one and hold them down.
Seeing that Lin Changning's long sword was still pressed against the man's neck, two soldiers ran over quickly and pulled out two thick ropes from somewhere, tying the man up tightly.
In less than the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, the entire group was killed. Lin Changning frowned, preparing to ask his younger brother why he was there.
Suddenly, her younger brother rushed up and hugged her tightly, burying his head in her neck, and it seemed that hot tears were sliding down her neck.
Chang Zhiyuan hugged the person and said in a very soft voice, "Sister, you're not dead, that's good."
Lin Changning was having trouble breathing because of the tightness, so she patted her younger brother's back to comfort him: "Okay, okay, you're too tight. I'm fine. Didn't anyone send you a message from home?"
Realizing his loss of composure, Chang Zhiyuan wiped the corner of his eye with his sleeve, his eyes red: "They don't know yet. I didn't dare tell my family about Daxing's situation, so I took it upon myself to come here."
Lin Changning then realized that his younger brother had probably missed some news.
Then he smiled and said, "My brother and mother are in Taiyuan now. I'll take you home in a bit. My brother said he asked someone to bring you a letter when he came, but you didn't receive it."
Chang Zhiyuan looked bewildered, and almost laughed as he looked at Lin Changning.
"Everything is fine at home. I'll take you there later, to find my mother."
Lin Changning almost blurted out "our mother," but stopped herself abruptly. She had almost forgotten that her younger brother was now registered as her cousin, so logically, she should now call him her elder brother.
Just thinking about this made Lin Changning's teeth ache.
He Sheng, who was standing behind Chang Zhiyuan, silently moved closer. He looked at Lin Changning's handsome face and then at Chang Zhiyuan's refined and handsome face: "Zhiyuan, who are you two?"
The two girls looked at the two people who looked almost identical with curiosity.
Aside from their different temperaments, the two look almost identical.
Chang Zhiyuan turned to look at He Sheng: "This is the cousin of mine that I told you about."
