Chapter 294 Mulberries
The next morning, various birdsongs filled the forest, their clear and melodious calls waking Lin Changning, who had only slept for a few hours the night before.
Lin Changning opened his still-sleepy eyes and subconsciously turned his head to look back. He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the two people sleeping soundly. It was just dawn.
Lin Changning estimated that he had rested for about three hours, so he decided not to disturb Li Mingshu and Yue'er who were fast asleep, as they were both exhausted these days.
After yawning, Lin Changning quietly slipped out the door, carrying a bag of snacks in her arms. After taking a couple of bites, Lin Changning slowly walked out, put the snacks back in her arms, and stretched.
My gaze fell upon a plump pheasant. Sunlight slanted down from above, illuminating the pheasant's colorful feathers, which reflected a beautiful array of hues.
Lin Changning tucked his sword into his waistband, took out his bow and arrows, nocked an arrow, and aimed directly at the pheasant in the treetop.
A whooshing sound was heard, and with a thud, the pheasant fell to the ground, squawking wildly.
This startled many birds in the forest.
Lin Changning jogged to the spot where the pheasant had fallen. The pheasant, still thrashing forward despite being hit by an arrow, grabbed its wing, pulled out the sword stone, and carried it back to the thatched hut.
Upon reaching the door, he saw the two still fast asleep and sighed softly. He lit a fire, cleaned the pheasant, and gently roasted it over the fire.
There wasn't much seasoning left in your pocket, and you reluctantly rubbed the remaining seasoning onto the pheasant. After plucking all the feathers off the wild pheasant, you roasted it over a fire, and in less than half an hour, it started sizzling and oozing oil.
Lin Changning applied another layer of seasoning, and the domineering aroma wafted directly from the fire into the nostrils of the two people inside the room.
While sleeping, Yue'er's little nose twitched. Suddenly, she opened her eyes with a start, swallowed silently, and smelled the meat twice in disbelief. After confirming that there was indeed the aroma of meat, she rolled out of bed and went outside.
However, Li Mingshu, who was always very concerned about her daughter, woke up as soon as Yue'er moved slightly. When she first woke up, her mind was still a little dazed, but she blinked when she smelled the fragrance outside the thatched house.
"Moon?"
Just as Yue'er was about to leave, she turned her head and looked at her mother, swallowing hard, and said, "Mother, it smells so good!"
Li Mingshu got out of bed and, holding Yue'er's hand, pushed open the door. She was stunned when she saw Lin Changning.
"Xiao Liu, what's going on?"
Lin Changning looked up at the two of them and smiled: "I caught this fat bird early this morning. Come and sit down, it'll be cooked in a little while."
Yue'er ran over and sat down next to Lin Changning, holding her head and looking at him with admiration: "Uncle Lin, you are really amazing."
Lin Changning switched hands and continued roasting the chicken, rubbing Yue'er's head and boasting, "Of course."
As he spoke, he tore off a piece of the juicy roasted chicken skin, blew on it, and stuffed it into Yue'er's mouth.
"Try it, is it fragrant?"
Moon breathed heavily as she chewed on the fragrant, oily chicken skin: "Whoosh, whoosh, delicious, delicious."
Lin Changning smiled, her eyes crinkling, and then tore off a piece of chicken and offered it to Li Mingshu: "Sister, would you like to try some?"
Li Mingshu slowly sat down beside Lin Changning on the other side: "Thank you, Xiao Liu."
Lin Changning picked at his fingers and continued roasting the pheasant. When the fog in the forest had gradually thinned out, the pheasant was finally done.
After the three of them finished eating a pheasant, they licked their fingers, still wanting more.
Yue'er rubbed her fingers together and looked at Lin Changning: "Uncle Lin's roasted chicken is the best thing I've ever eaten."
Lin Changning chuckled, "If you like, I'll catch some more along the way to make roast chicken for you."
The moon's eyes shone brightly, and she nodded hurriedly.
Li Mingshu wasn't that greedy after all, and she looked at her daughter helplessly and shook her head.
After finishing their meal, Lin Changning stood up and said, "You guys wait for me here. Yue'er's hair is indeed a problem. I need to find some herbs to dye her hair when I get back, otherwise we still won't be able to enter the next city."
Li Mingshu nodded: "Thank you for your trouble, Xiao Liu."
After saying that, he took his daughter's hand and prepared to walk into the thatched house. Lin Changning escorted her back into the house and instructed her: "Don't go far. Stay inside. Besides the guards who are following us, there may also be wild animals in the mountains. It's safer to stay in the room."
Li Mingshu nodded to indicate that she understood: "Don't worry, Xiao Liu, we won't run around."
After settling the two people in, Lin Changning quickly headed outside, marking the way and searching towards the water, but unfortunately he couldn't find Liao Lan no matter how hard he searched.
This herb is said to grow near water.
But Lin Changning couldn't be found after searching all the way.
As Lin Changning walked along the stream, he suddenly saw a tree with small, dark purple fruits under it. His eyes lit up and he quickly ran towards it.
"Mulberries!!!"
After Lin Changning ran to the tree, he indeed found it to be a tall wild mulberry tree.
It's June now, and the mulberries on the trees have been ripe for a long time, with many black and purple mulberries falling to the ground.
Lin Changning climbed up the tall mulberry tree, covered the mulberries with his clothes, and quickly began picking them.
These mulberries will not only fill our stomachs, but perhaps this time we won't need Liang Lan to dye Yue'er's hair black.
Lin Changning was overjoyed and quickly began picking mulberries. By mid-morning, when his pockets were full of mulberries, he jumped straight down from the tree.
With mulberries in his arms, he excitedly headed back towards the thatched hut.
When they reached the door, they found that no one had touched the wooden stick they had propped up at the entrance. Relieved, they opened the door and looked inside. The two people on the bed laughed: "Sister, Yue'er, I found some good things."
Yue'er jumped out of bed and rushed over: "What did you find, Uncle Lin?"
Li Mingshu also looked at Lin Changning with some curiosity. Lin Changning spread a large bag of mulberries he was carrying on the table.
"We found quite a few mulberries, which can be used to dye Yue'er's hair."
"dyeing?"
Yue'er looked at Lin Changning with some confusion. Lin Changning wiped the black and purple stains off his hands and pinched Yue'er's little cheek.
"This time, Yue'er will be able to have hair like everyone else."
Yue'er usually doesn't say it, but she has heard the gossip among the maids and servants many times, and sometimes she is bothered by it, wondering why she is different from others.
Because if she were the same as everyone else, her mother wouldn't have to suffer because of her.
Hearing Lin Changning say that he could make her like everyone else, Yue'er suddenly pouted, her eyes filled with tears, and after taking Lin Changning's hand, she asked, "Uncle Lin, then, does that mean I'll be like everyone else? No one will bully Mother anymore, or call Yue'er a monster?"
