Chapter 295 Couldn't it be my father?
Lin Changning felt quite uncomfortable after Yue'er asked him that question. As a modern person, he naturally understood that Yue'er was just born with albinism and had nothing to do with demons or ghosts.
In this day and age, people who are different are always ostracized, let alone a young child.
Yue'er wiped away her tears and smiled through them: "Uncle Lin must keep his word. If he bullies Yue'er and Mother, you must help Yu'er beat him up!"
Lin Changning nodded, gently stroking Yue'er's head: "Of course I keep my word. If Uncle Lin lies to you, may Uncle Lin turn into a little dog in the future."
Yue'er shook her head vigorously: "I don't want Uncle Lin to turn into a puppy. Uncle is fine as he is. Yue'er likes Uncle Lin the most."
Lin Changning smiled and looked up at Li Mingshu, who was deeply moved: "Sister, come and help me drain the juice from the mulberries. We'll dye Yue'er's hair and then leave tomorrow. Once we can get into the city and rent a carriage, we won't have to work so hard anymore."
Li Mingshu sighed and rolled up her sleeves. After searching around the room, she finally found an earthenware pot. Lin Changning took the pot, went out to find a stream, washed himself, and returned to the thatched hut.
Then, together with Li Mingshu, they filled half a jar with mulberries, found a clean stone, and crushed them into mulberry paste. Li Mingshu held Yue'er while sitting on the bed, and Lin Changning smeared the mulberry paste onto Yue'er's hair.
After applying several thick layers, Yu'er's white hair was finally completely covered, giving the entire area a dark purple color. Small patches of dark purple also appeared on Yue'er's snow-white skin.
"Try to keep Yue'er away from water these days. Mulberry's dyed hair will fade after one or two washes, and people will notice."
Li Mingshu nodded, indicating that she understood. Lin Changning then picked half a jar of mulberries, mashed them into juice, and carefully dyed Yue'er's face again.
Once it was confirmed that as long as they weren't too close together, there wouldn't be any major color issues, the earthenware pot was finally placed down.
"It should be almost dry once it's air-dried. As long as it doesn't get wet, it shouldn't give anything away."
The moon's big eyes rolled around, and she couldn't help but want to sit up and go to the river to see what her black hair looked like.
Lin Changning saw through Yue'er's little thoughts, and pinched Yue'er's nose with his hands, which were dyed black: "Uncle Lin is going to wash his hands, Yue'er, come with me."
Yue'er sat up excitedly and pulled Lin Changning outside. After walking for more than ten minutes, they found a stream. Lin Changning carefully washed his hands, but the pigment deposits on his hands could not be washed off for a while.
Yue'er, with her long, dark purple hair flowing freely, squatted by the stream, excitedly watching her reflection in the water.
"It really turned black. Yue'er isn't a monster anymore, she's not a monster anymore."
The children's cheerful laughter echoed beside the stream, and Lin Changning couldn't help but laugh as well. He shook his head and continued washing the dirt off his body and hands.
After washing up, seeing the somewhat excited Yue'er, he walked over and took her hand: "Let's go back. Tonight, Uncle Lin will hunt another pheasant for us to have a treat."
Yue'er skipped and hopped, letting Lin Changning lead her. When they arrived at the thatched hut, Lin Changning handed Yue'er back to Li Mingshu: "I'm going out to hunt another pheasant. We'll have a feast tonight. We need to hurry on our journey tomorrow, so we should eat well to have energy."
Li Mingshu sat on the bed, holding her daughter, and smiled gently at Lin Changning: "We'll wait for you here. Be careful when you go out. If you encounter any guards, don't fight them head-on. Come back to us first. Your life is important."
Lin Changning nodded and waved his hand: "Don't worry, I'm going."
After saying that, Lin Changning walked outside.
Inside the thatched hut, Li Mingshu pinched her daughter's cheek and watched Lin Changning leave. She couldn't help but sigh in her heart, "Although Xiao Liu is a woman, she surpasses most men in the world."
Yue'er watched as her mother stared blankly out the door, head tilted, seemingly lost in thought. After a while, her eyes lit up, and she looked up at her mother, asking, "Mother, do you like Uncle Lin?"
Li Mingshu looked down at her daughter's innocent eyes with some doubt: "Hmm? Of course you like it. What about Yue'er?"
Yue'er tilted her head back and blinked her big eyes: "Yue'er also likes Uncle Lin. Uncle Lin can catch birds, he can turn Yue'er's hair black, and he can beat up bad guys. I like Uncle Lin the most."
Li Mingshu chuckled: "Then, compared to Uncle Qi, who does Yue'er like more?"
Yue'er pouted and counted on her fingers, saying, "Uncle beats bad guys and bad daddy. Yue'er likes Uncle. Uncle Lin beats bad guys too. Uncle Lin makes delicious food for Yu'er, takes Yue'er to catch fish, and praises Yue'er as a little fairy. Hmm... Yue'er likes them all. She likes Uncle so much, and she likes Uncle Lin so much too."
Li Mingshu smiled, her eyes crinkling as she looked at the few fingers her daughter was counting on: "So, how much do you like your mother?"
Yue'er spread her arms and legs: "Yue'er loves Mother the most, the most of all."
Li Mingshu was amused and felt very gratified to see Yue'er's quirky and clever appearance. Since leaving the Marquis's mansion, Yue'er has become more cheerful every day. Although the journey was indeed quite thrilling and the two of them were quite tired, it was obvious that Yue'er had become stronger and more cheerful since leaving the Marquis's mansion.
Seeing her mother's smile, Yue'er turned around and hugged her. Looking up, she suddenly asked, "Mother, why can't Uncle Lin and Uncle be Yue'er's father? Yue'er likes them."
Li Mingshu's smile froze, unsure how to answer the question: "Yes, my uncle and mother are siblings, and siblings cannot marry."
Yue'er asked innocently, "What about Uncle Lin? Can Uncle Lin be Yue'er's father? Can Uncle Lin and Mother get married?"
Li Mingshu's smile faltered, unsure how to answer herself. She couldn't very well tell her innocent daughter that this Uncle Lin was actually Aunt Lin, and that Xiao Liu's identity was something she couldn't reveal to her.
Xiao Liu did her best to protect the mother and daughter along the way. She couldn't repay kindness with enmity. Yue'er was young and didn't know how to keep her mouth shut, so she naturally couldn't let Yue'er know.
So Li Mingshu said vaguely, "Because Yue'er already has a father, she can't have another father..."
Yue'er continued, "Now that the bad father who bullied Yue'er and her mother is dead, does that mean Yue'er can have a good father like Uncle Lin?"
Li Mingshu looked at her filial and powerful daughter with a heavy heart, and her smile could no longer be maintained.
"Does Yue'er dislike her father very much?"
Yue'er tilted her head, looking at her mother with some incomprehension: "Father is holding a knife and trying to kill Yue'er, and he's bullying Mother, hitting Mother, and even making people not give us food. Why can't I hate Father?"
Li Mingshu looked at her daughter with some guilt and heartache: "It's all my fault, I found Yue'er a bad father..."
