Chapter 13: Using Evidence Instead of Tears.
Zhu Qing had just hung up the phone when she looked up and saw the two lively characters from her team coming over, chattering away.
Tsang Wing-shan and Tsui Ka-lok started arguing in the police station cafeteria and carried it all the way to the break room. Now they're each holding a thermos and still won't stop.
"Xu Jiale, who told you to learn how to soak goji berries like me!" Zeng Yongshan slapped his arm.
Xu Jiale exaggeratedly rubbed his arm: "I knew you were targeting me. You even tried to squeeze me out during dinner to make room for the new guy!"
Zeng Yongshan immediately lowered her voice: "What do you mean, 'newcomer'? He's called Senior Brother Liang!"
"Just call him Inspector Leung, no need for 'senior brother'..."
The sound of knocking on the table interrupted their argument as Mo Zhenbang came out of his office, signaling everyone to be quiet.
"Chen Chaosheng's autopsy report is out, and there are still some follow-up tasks to be done. Qi Kai, go to the Sheng family."
“I’ll go with Mr. Liang.” Zhu Qing held an envelope in her hand. “I left Sheng Peishan’s dinner invitation with me.”
On the way to the mountainside, Liang Qikai focused on driving, while Zhu Qing stared blankly at the street scene outside the window.
The doubts surrounding the case lingered in her mind...
"You don't remember me?"
In fact, the newly transferred Inspector Leung had already recognized Zhu Qing.
At the Wong Chuk Hang Police Academy, he was two years her senior. Back then, this beautiful girl, who always kept to herself, attracted countless eyes. She clearly had such a respectable and leisurely job to choose from, but she chose the most difficult path.
The hardships of police academy training are still vivid in my mind; the parade ground was scorching hot in the summer, and there were constant complaints during marching drills...
Liang Qikai joked, "My childhood dream was to become a policeman, but I almost couldn't endure the hardship."
"I'm sorry." Zhu Qing pulled her thoughts away from the dark green leather notebook. "What did you say?"
"Zhu Qing, do you still remember that class where we simulated visiting the masses?" Liang Qikai suddenly asked, "The one where someone played the role of a scavenging old man."
Such courses are commonplace at police academies.
In my memory, one of my classmates played the role of an old man sweeping the streets, and everyone else surrounded the "old man," showing him concern and trying to get close to him.
"Only you discovered the clues that 'Uncle' was hiding."
Zhu Qing: "The head instructor said, 'Use evidence instead of tears.'"
“I knew then that Zhu would become an incorruptible madam in the future.” Liang Qikai’s voice remained gentle.
The instructor's teachings from that year still seem to echo in my ears—
Unwarranted sympathy will only add to the distress of the victim's family.
Inspector Leung smiled gently, like the warm winter sun: "It proves that you have indeed grown into an outstanding police officer."
An outstanding police officer? Zhu Qing looked down at her police badge on her chest.
She hopes it will be like that too.
...
The officers from the Major Crimes Unit have recently become frequent visitors to the Mid-Levels Villa, and the property security guards and the Sheng family's domestic helpers have long been accustomed to their frequent visits.
Zhu Qing handed the velvet envelope to the housekeeper: "I was riding in the Second Miss's car just now and accidentally took her banquet invitation."
“Madam, you’re too kind.” Butler Cui accepted the gift with both hands. “Actually, we could have just made a phone call and sent a driver to pick it up.”
Liang Qikai stepped forward and explained his purpose, and Butler Cui immediately arranged for someone to lead the way.
It was just a routine wrap-up, so Zhu Qing didn't follow and stayed in the living room to wait.
The steady footsteps approached from afar, and Liang Qikai, led by a maid, stood waiting outside Sheng Peishan's door.
"Second Miss, the police officer has arrived." The maid knocked softly on the door.
Before the words were finished, a soft "click" sound came from the children's room at the end of the third-floor corridor.
First, the door quietly opened a crack, and Shengfang poked her little head out, barefoot, and tiptoed out.
He walked briskly, his small steps turning into a jog, until he saw that it was a strange male police officer approaching, and his chubby little face immediately fell.
Downstairs in the living room—
Butler Cui brewed Zhu Qing a cup of tea and, during their conversation, told her that everyone could see that the young master of the Sheng family liked this madam.
The young master is usually unruly, but he is actually a pitiful child. Although he always pretends not to care with his hands behind his back, he is actually very willing to be close to her.
"Madam, would you like to invite the young master down for a seat?"
They went out together, shared nurse information together, and immediately called the CID room after parting ways...
Perhaps it was because of Liang Qikai's words that Zhu Qing unconsciously recalled the admonitions of her instructors in the police academy classroom.
Like doctors, police officers must also withdraw unnecessary empathy and learn to maintain a professional distance from family members.
"No need."
Butler Cui did not insist any further.
The aroma of food wafted from the kitchen.
Zhu Qing still remembered the angelica and deer antler soup she had that day, and casually asked, "Was it Sister Ping who cooked?"
“In the past, this long table could be full of people for dinner…” Butler Cui looked at the empty dining room with a melancholy tone, “Now, when Sister Ping cooks the meal, she can only divide it into two portions and send them to the second young lady and the young master’s room.”
The finest Longjing tea has an irresistible aroma.
After Zhu Qing placed the teacup back on the coffee table, Butler Cui skillfully refilled her tea, his back still ramrod straight: "Mada, feng shui?"
"Actually, when the house was still being renovated, the second young lady had concerns about the feng shui of the house."
"She accompanied the master all over Hong Kong and finally managed to invite that Master Gan... You know, rich people believe in this stuff, and this master was poached from the shipping magnate's family with a lot of money."
Steam was still rising from the teacup.
Zhu Qing asked, "How was it resolved later?"
It's blooming and facing the living room.
Zhu Qing was still talking quietly with Butler Cui, without even raising her head.
"They chose an auspicious day to move, and the rituals alone will last for three days and three nights." Butler Cui held up three fingers and waved them, then suddenly sneered, "If you ask me, they're all charlatans."
"What good would it do to hire a feng shui master to change the feng shui? Miss Sheng still suffered that car accident."
"The second young lady was hit too hard. She locked herself in her room for three whole months and wouldn't even open the curtains."
Sheng Peishan had mentioned many times that there was something strange about the house, saying that Old Master Sheng had invited a master.
After the master selected an auspicious day for moving, the Sheng family specially suspended nighttime construction.
In other words, it wasn't Chen Chaosheng who halted the entire construction project back then.
He was only responsible for relaying messages.
Zhu Qing looked up.
She finally found a new breakthrough in the case.
Butler Cui said regretfully, "No amount of money can overcome the cruel tricks of fate... God has been so unfair to this family."
...
At this moment, there is a distance of three floors between them...
The young master of the Sheng family pursed his lips, and his bright, obsidian-like eyes lost their luster.
Adults are all the same.
Only naive children would believe that they are truly considered friends.
He silently turned around, dragging his beloved Ultraman doll back home. The sound of the door closing was so soft it was almost inaudible.
But the next moment, the young master, unwilling to give up, forcefully pushed open the door, bringing a loud bang.
Shengfang, holding an Ultraman figure, sat at the door of the children's room, acting as a little doorman.
Unaware that he was quietly letting out a childish, defiant voice—
"snort!"
