In the soft candlelight, a deep sorrow flickered in Bai Yujing's eyes. His voice was low and heavy: "Huaiyu, you must protect Fengyun and Huiyi. In the future, we will surely welcome new life. This is the most perfect choice we can make right now..."
"But the fault is not mine, why should my unborn child be sacrificed!"
Crystal tears slid down Jiang Huaiyu's cheeks.
She understood the reasoning behind it.
However, hearing these words from Bai Yujing's mouth was still hard for her to accept. She didn't want to believe that Bai Yujing had actually let go of their blood ties.
The fetus in her womb was her only blood relative in this world, the precious child she had longed to meet countless times since becoming pregnant. She had imagined countless scenarios: if it was a boy, she would have Bai Yujing guide him to study poetry and literature, pass the imperial examinations, and serve the country; if it was a girl, she would personally dress her up as beautifully as a flower and teach her to read and paint.
Why should this child suffer such unfair treatment before even being born?
Jiang Huaiyu's face was half-soaked with tears; she was still trapped in self-blame and helplessness. At this moment, a bowl of bitter medicine was placed in front of her again.
She stared at the bowl of medicine in horror, then shook her head firmly: "I will never drink it!"
Princess Ziyan gave a cold snort and waved her hand lightly. Zhang San stepped forward and tightly grabbed Jiang Huaiyu's arms, rendering her unable to move. Huaiyu could only helplessly watch Bai Yujing approach her and bring the medicine bowl to her lips again.
Jiang Huaiyu kept her lips tightly closed, ignoring Bai Yujing's actions.
Bai Yujing gazed at her silently, his eyes seemingly holding a thousand unspoken words, but ultimately chose to remain silent.
The two remained locked in a standoff.
Princess Ziyan frowned and said impatiently, "My patience is limited. What are you all dawdling about?"
Jiang Huaiyu's face was half-dry from tears. She glared at Bai Yujing with resentment and asked, "Are you really going to force me to drink it?"
Bai Yujing nodded.
Jiang Huaiyu revealed a vengeful smile, "Fine, then you feed me."
"Huaiyu, don't do this..."
However, Jiang Huaiyu no longer paid any attention to him.
Bai Yujing's hands trembled slightly as he fed Jiang Huaiyu the medicine little by little with a spoon. Although Jiang Huaiyu obediently drank it, she kept her eyes fixed on Bai Yujing's eyes with every sip.
Under that deep gaze, Bai Yujing felt as if he had become a treacherous and despicable person. His heart ached as if it were being stabbed, and he could hardly breathe, but he still insisted on finishing feeding the medicine.
Then, he brought over a glass of water and said softly with concern, "It tastes very bitter, doesn't it? Rinse your mouth first."
Jiang Huaiyu turned her head away coldly, a bitter smile on her lips.
bitter?
She thought to herself, how could the bitterness in her mouth compare to the pain in her heart?
In that dark moment, she couldn't even protect her own flesh and blood. Such sorrow made her unworthy of being called a mother, and family was a luxury for her.
Tears streamed silently down her cheeks, each drop seemingly telling a story of boundless sorrow.
Bai Yujing wanted to raise his hand to gently wipe away her glistening tears, but Jiang Huaiyu brushed his hand away with deep disgust.
She knew in her heart that it wasn't his fault, but she couldn't overcome the deep-seated hurdle in her heart. How could he be so calm, ending the tiny life inside her?
The once loving couple found themselves in an awkward silence, one silently shedding tears while the other was overwhelmed with guilt.
Princess Ziyan witnessed this scene, a slight, sarcastic smile playing on her lips. Even the deepest emotions, once cracked, can crumble into nothing more than a bubble bursting in an instant.
Suddenly, Jiang Huaiyu felt a subtle pain in her lower abdomen. Her eyes widened in panic, and a strong sense of fear and loss welled up inside her.
The pain intensified, and she lost her balance, collapsing heavily into the chair.
Bai Yujing hurriedly picked her up and carefully placed her on the bed, anxiously calling out, "Doctor, Doctor Liang!"
Doctor Liang arrived quickly, pushing aside the people around him, and firmly grasped Jiang Huaiyu's wrist to take her pulse. Princess Ziyan stepped forward and asked curiously, "Doctor Liang, is this pregnancy-stabilizing medicine too strong?"
After a moment of contemplation, Doctor Liang said, "The medicine is of the highest quality, but Madam Bai's body is weak and cannot withstand its nourishing effects. I'm afraid the fetus may not survive."
Princess Ziyan gently covered her mouth, feigning surprise, and said, "Oh dear, isn't this my fault?"
Doctor Liang gently shook his head and explained, "Princess, there is no need to blame yourself. Madam Bai's pregnancy was already congenitally weak, and even without this medicine, it would probably not last long."
Princess Ziyan nodded slightly and instructed, "In that case, I will trouble Doctor Liang to take good care of Madam Bai."
After saying that, she gracefully returned to her seat, as if it were none of her business.
Jiang Huaiyu was heartbroken by the loss of her unborn child, and the insincere conversation around her only fueled her anger. She roared, "Get out of here!"
Bai Yujing held her hand tightly and asked anxiously, "Huaiyu, how are you feeling?"
Jiang Huaiyu was in so much pain that she was drenched in sweat, but she still resolutely shook off his hand and said with tears in her eyes, "It's none of your business! Bai Yujing, right now I'd rather you abandon me than be so indifferent to me."
Her gaze was as cold as ice, making Bai Yujing tremble as if chilled to the bone.
Doctor Liang stepped forward at the opportune moment, bowed, and said, "Scholar Bai, please leave this matter to this old man."
