Chapter 21 Respect

The two strolled along the quiet mountain path outside the Bai family mansion, the afterglow of the sunset on the horizon like a brocade, the sky ablaze with crimson clouds.

Jiang Huaiyu couldn't help but sigh softly, "A full moon is hard to find, and colorful clouds are fleeting."

Noticing the faint sadness in her voice, Bai Yujing turned around and asked with concern, "Did you suffer any grievances while I was out today, my wife?"

“No,” Jiang Huaiyu shook her head gently, “I was just moved by the sight.”

Bai Yujing smiled and said, "The beautiful things in the world are always hard to last, but even if you only have them for a short time, it is still a great pleasure in life."

Jiang Huaiyu responded with a stiff smile, "You're absolutely right."

Noticing the faint weariness in her eyes and brows, Bai Yujing suddenly stopped. "If my wife is feeling tired, let's go home."

His care remained as meticulous as ever, but Jiang Huaiyu couldn't help but wonder if this thoughtfulness was only for her.

"It's not completely dark yet, why don't we take another walk?" she said softly, her tone carrying a hint of indescribable helplessness and melancholy.

Jiang Huaiyu was deeply confused, not understanding what kind of changes she had encountered.

Perhaps she shouldn't have harbored that hope. If she had, even knowing that the person Bai Yujing cherished in his heart was Jiang Shuqin, she wouldn't be so distraught as she is now.

In this life, she married into the poor Bai family. Although she faced her mother-in-law's pickiness and her sister-in-law and cousin's rejection, Bai Yujing always stood in front of her, sheltering her from the wind and rain, allowing her to experience the warmth and sweetness of being cherished by her husband.

She felt that she had found a perfect marriage and was finally able to escape the loneliness of her previous life, live a peaceful and harmonious life with her husband.

Unexpectedly, this turned out to be a complicated and tragic love affair.

Jiang Huaiyu's eyelashes trembled slightly. She finally understood why Bai Yujing refused to spend the night with her on their wedding night. At the time, she thought he was thoughtful and considerate.

However, since ancient times, which man could remain unmoved by his newlywed wife on their wedding night?

After all, she was not the woman he longed for.

The inscription on that portrait was still vivid in my mind, glaringly obvious:

I wish to hold Shuqin's hand and stay with her until we grow old!

Jiang Huaiyu felt as if her heart had been pricked by a fine needle, the pain was excruciating. After two cycles of reincarnation, she had only truly tasted the flavor of love today. If she hadn't been careful, she would have easily fallen into the whirlpool of emotions. Was this the cruel ending she would have received?

As my heart was filled with emotion, I suddenly heard a familiar and warm voice coming from not far away.

"Oh my, look at you two, out for a walk?"

It turned out to be Aunt Bai.

She had just returned from work when she caught sight of the two strolling hand in hand, and a playful smile crept across her face.

"Second Aunt is back," Bai Yujing greeted politely. "It's hot, but thankfully there's a slight coolness in the evening. I brought my wife out to familiarize herself with the surroundings."

Jiang Huaiyu had received a lot of care from Aunt Bai and was grateful to her, so he affectionately called her "Aunt Bai" at this moment.

Aunt Bai's gaze shifted between the two, her face beaming with an almost uncontrollable smile.

"Wonderful! Seeing you two leaning on each other, I truly understand the 'perfect match' described in the play. It turns out that this is exactly what a match made in heaven like you two is."

Bai Yujing smiled warmly, "Second Aunt always likes to make us happy. Huaiyu is very shy, so please don't embarrass her."

Every word and phrase reveals boundless care and deep affection.

Aunt Bai smiled mischievously and said softly, "It's alright, Yujing. You don't know, but the day I went to the capital to welcome Huaiyu, we had a long chat. I told her many interesting stories about you, so your wife has already lost that shyness."

"Is this how it is, my dear wife of Yujing?" She winked at Jiang Huaiyu, her eyes full of mischief.

Logically, Jiang Huaiyu should have felt embarrassed to be teased in public, but at this moment her mood was unusually heavy, and she instead showed a calm and composed demeanor.

"Second Aunt is absolutely right."

Upon hearing this, Bai Yujing blushed and quickly changed the subject.

"Second Aunt, we've arrived at your doorstep. Why not come in for a rest and have a cup of tea?"

Aunt Bai shook her head and said with a smile, "No need, no need. I still have a lot of chores to deal with at home, so I won't chat with you anymore."

Her eyes darted around, and she suddenly pulled Bai Yujing aside, whispering, "Yujing, it's heartwarming that you love your wife. Your mother has a strong temper, and your new wife is so delicate. You must take good care of her, otherwise, your second aunt will hold you accountable."

"Second Aunt, please rest assured, I will do my best," Bai Yujing replied firmly.

Despite their efforts to keep their voices down, Jiang Huaiyu still managed to catch the outline of their conversation.

Her heart felt as if it had been split in two by a sharp knife; one half was bathed in shyness and joy, while the other half struggled to suppress its emotions, constantly reminding her that it was all just an illusion.

As soon as she finished speaking, Aunt Bai turned to Jiang Huaiyu and said gently, "Yujing's wife, I have to go back now. Another day, I'll have Yujing take you to the town for a stroll. You can see from here on the mountain that although the town is small, its prosperity is not to be underestimated."

"Okay, Second Aunt, take care." Jiang Huaiyu smiled politely and replied gently.

After seeing Aunt Bai off, the sky gradually darkened, and the two slowly embarked on their journey home.
