Chapter 4: Keeping the Bride Out of the Door

After saying goodbye, Jiang Huaiyu, carrying ten boxes full of precious books, resolutely boarded the Bai family's oxcart.

Throughout the journey, she spoke very little, often lost in thought, and appeared unusually quiet.

Seeing this, Bai's second aunt mistakenly thought that she was feeling sad because of the pain of leaving her hometown.

Aunt Bai smiled kindly and gently comforted her, "Yujing's wife, we women are destined to leave our parents' home at a certain age and enter other people's homes to start a new life."

But you need not worry. Although our Bai family comes from a poor background and is not as wealthy and comfortable as your maternal family, my nephew Yujing is a brilliant and talented young man. In our Bai family, he is the most promising young man. Everyone in the village says that he will surely win the imperial examination and be the top scholar in the world.

When he one day dons official robes, you will be the wife of an official, a truly blessed woman!

Jiang Huaiyu blushed slightly at being addressed as "Yujing's wife" and lowered her eyes shyly.

Seeing this, Aunt Bai laughed loudly, as clear as a silver bell.

He continued jokingly, "My dear wife, the journey must have been a bit monotonous. How about I tell you all about Yujing's exploits? Let me give you a sneak peek at your future husband."

Is it Baiyujing?

Jiang Huaiyu was indeed very interested in the person who was about to become her husband.

"Alright, thank you for your trouble, Auntie."

Jiang Huaiyu had never traveled far before, and in just two days, she already looked exhausted.

Fortunately, everyone on the journey took extra care of her, and Aunt Bai even kept her company and chatted with her to relieve her loneliness, which enabled her to persevere.

Along the way, she admired the well-arranged cities, the vast fields, and the rolling mountains. Although she was physically tired, her mood was exceptionally bright and she felt an unprecedented joy.

On the morning of the third day, the group finally arrived at the territory of Liangzhou.

Aunt Bai asked with a smile, "We'll be home in two more hours, Yujing's wife. Do you know the exact location of the Bai family home?"

Jiang Huaiyu responded, "I heard it's Fushun Town, which is located about 20 miles outside Liangzhou City."

Aunt Bai handed her some dry food and water, explaining, "That's right, our place is called Fushun Town, and the Bai family lives on the hillside next to the town. Although our town is not large and cannot compare with the prosperity of the capital, it is still very lively. You'll see for yourself when you go there."

Jiang Huaiyu smiled and nodded.

The Bai family lives in a rural area and is not bound by formalities, but everyone in the family is kind and sincere.

Over the course of her time with them, she gradually discovered that she was growing to like them more and more.

...

The midday sun was blazing, and the oxcart finally slowly made its way to the foot of the mountain where the Bai family lived.

As they climbed higher, the sounds of laughter and chatter from the Bai family gradually filled their ears, the lively atmosphere seeming to waft through the air.

"Yujing's wife, we're finally home! Listen to how joyful they are inside!"

Aunt Bai looked Jiang Huaiyu up and down, her eyes filled with admiration and her words full of joy: "You're so beautiful and charming, you'll definitely attract everyone's attention when you step into the house later. Don't blush too much then!"

Jiang Huaiyu blushed, her face blooming like a peach blossom. She gently waved the round fan in her hand, covering half of her face.

After saying this, the group had already reached the outside of the courtyard when the oxcart suddenly came to a stop.

Aunt Bai looked closely and saw a graceful young girl standing a few feet away from the Bai family's gate.

Upon recognizing Xie Wenying, she called out with a beaming smile, "It's Wenying! We've brought our new bride back from the capital. Come inside quickly and let your brother come out to greet her!"

Xie Wenying gently shook her head, her tone calm: "Second Aunt, there's no rush."

Aunt Bai was anxious and couldn't help but scold, "You silly girl, even if you want some good luck, this isn't the time. You have to wait until your brother and sister-in-law have their wedding ceremony and consummate their marriage. They haven't even stepped into the house yet, and you're stopping them on their way. What kind of behavior is that?"

Aunt Bai's words carried a hint of reproach, but more than anything, they expressed her anticipation for the marriage and her best wishes for Bai Yujing and his wife.

Xie Wenyin took a few steps closer and explained in a gentle tone, "Second Aunt, you misunderstood me. I had no intention of blocking your way. In fact, my aunt personally instructed me to inquire about some matters before Miss Jiang crosses the threshold."

Her gaze shifted to the oxcart, and her voice unconsciously rose a few decibels, carrying an undeniable firmness.

"We hope Miss Jiang will alight from the carriage for a chat."

Jiang Huaiyu slowly stepped down from the oxcart, stood firmly on his feet, and politely asked, "May I ask what advice this young lady may offer?"

She simply stood there, asking questions politely, yet she seemed to possess an indescribable charm. Both her appearance and demeanor were irresistibly attractive, making it difficult to look away.

While surprised, Xie Wenyin unconsciously straightened her back, appearing even more dignified.

"It wasn't me, but my aunt, who is also Brother Yujing's mother. She has something she wants to ask Miss Jiang."

Just then, a commotion arose at the courtyard gate, and a crowd escorted a woman who appeared to be in her forties or fifties as she walked out.

Despite it being a joyous day, she showed no smile at the arrival of the bride; her face was as cold as ice.

Upon seeing this, Jiang Huaiyu understood.

This woman was most likely his mother-in-law, Bai Qi.
