Chapter 45 Such Tolerance

"Okay, I'll be right there."

Jiang Huaiyu did not ask for the reason, but Xie Wenyin's attempted suicide had already given her some guesses.

Madam Yang sighed, "I imagine when you get to your mother, she might not be so kind. But you must stay calm. Yujing is truly sincere towards you."

A sincere heart?

Jiang Huaiyu pursed her lips, remaining noncommittal.

She walked lightly to Bai Qishi's room, hesitated for a moment, and then pushed the door open and entered.

"Mother-in-law, is there something you need?"

However, they found that only Bai Qi was alone; Xie Wenyin was not present.

Bai Qi's expression was solemn, and she stared at her intently for a long time before slowly saying, "Please sit down."

"How is my cousin Wenyin doing?" Jiang Huaiyu asked with concern after sitting down in the chair.

"She was so grief-stricken that she wanted to end her own life. How can her condition be salvaged?" Bai Qi asked coldly.

Jiang Huaiyu remained silent.

Seeing that she remained silent, Bai Qi sneered, "To be frank, I regard Wen Yin as my own daughter and cannot stand idly by and watch her suffer misfortune. I intend to betroth Wen Yin to Yu Jing as a secondary wife, and I am informing you of this in advance."

"Since your mother-in-law has already made up her mind, why doesn't she just tell your husband?"

"As the legal wife, it is your duty to accept concubines for your husband."

Jiang Huaiyu said in a calm but firm tone, "I understand my mother-in-law's meaning. Since you have given the order, as your daughter-in-law, I should naturally do as you say. As for my husband, I will do my best to speak to him. But there is one thing I firmly oppose: making my cousin Wenyin a secondary wife."

Bai Qi glanced at her sideways and said, "You say you'll do it one minute, and then you object the next. What are you really up to?"

Jiang Huaiyu said firmly, "I am the legitimate wife whom the Bai family has rightfully married. My status is established, and the position of wife in the family belongs to me. I do not object to taking a concubine, but I cannot accept the position of equal wife."

After pondering for a long time, Lady Bai finally nodded slightly.

"Alright, as long as you agree to let Wenyin join the family, whether she is a secondary wife or not is irrelevant."

Jiang Huaiyu slowly stood up, her tone calm, "If Mother-in-law has no further instructions, I may take my leave."

Bai Qi originally expected that after Jiang Huaiyu made a clear statement in the morning, she would not easily compromise now, and might even use the power of the Jiang family to exert pressure. She was prepared to use her methods to force her to make concessions.

To my surprise, the other party agreed so easily.

The reason she was unwilling to become a secondary wife was not because she was afraid of having another person by her husband's side, but because she resolutely rejected this identity.

Bai Qishi still had doubts and couldn't help but ask, "Do you really agree to this?"

Jiang Huaiyu was silent for a moment, then nodded slightly, "My mother-in-law and husband will weigh the options, and I will follow their advice."

Does she really agree?

Deep down, she naturally disagreed.

Who would want to share their lover with someone else?

However, in this complex social order, it seemed to be the norm for men to have three wives and four concubines. What reason could she possibly have to resist this arrangement?

Was she in love with Bai Yujing, or was Bai Yujing devoted to her, and the two had vowed that their feelings would never change?

However, she was neither, and therefore lacked that confidence.

Since that's the case, even if Xie Wenyin hadn't intervened today, someone would have replaced her someday, so why should she confront Bai Qishi head-on?

After all, if the situation escalates back to the Jiang family, with Jiang Shuqin in charge, she will only become a laughing stock in everyone's eyes. How could anyone possibly stand up for her?

Even if it was just a single act of kindness, she could be said to have saved Xie Wenyin's life.

Bai Qi's tone gradually softened, "Daughter-in-law Yujing, I was too worried about Wenyin just now and my words were inappropriate. Please forgive me and comfort Yujing when you get back."

She assumed that since Yujing's daughter-in-law had already given her consent, and since the matter concerned Wenyin's safety, Yujing would surely agree as well.

"Yes, ma'am." Jiang Huaiyu nodded in agreement.

Seeing that she was so calm, without any anger or argument, Bai Qi thought that she probably wouldn't complain to the Jiang family, and her heart gradually calmed down.

When Jiang Huaiyu returned to her room, she saw that Bai Yujing had already woken up and was leaning against the bed waiting for her.

Upon seeing her arrive, Bai Yujing immediately stood up to greet her, asking with concern, "Why didn't you wake me when Mother was looking for you? Did she put pressure on you again? If it's because of Wenyin, just tell her that I would never agree."

Jiang Huaiyu gazed at him intently for a long time before slowly speaking: "My mother-in-law intends to marry my cousin Wenyin to you, but as her secondary wife, I have not agreed."

Before Bai Yujing could even feel a surge of joy, she heard her continue, "However, I agree to let my cousin Wenyin enter the family as a concubine."

"What?!"

Bai Yujing stared at her in shock.

"You mean you'd allow me to marry someone else?"

Before Jiang Huaiyu could answer, he suddenly stood up and said angrily, "Was it your mother who forced you? I'm going to confront her right now. No one can force me to do anything I don't agree to."

Jiang Huaiyu held his hand tightly, "My mother did not force me."

Bai Yujing grew increasingly confused, his handsome face filled with bewilderment. "Then what is the purpose of this?"

Seeing his expression, Jiang Huaiyu couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.

But she remained steadfast, saying, "It is my duty as the legal wife to allow my husband to take a concubine. Although the matter of my cousin Wenyin came suddenly, upon careful consideration, it is not unreasonable. Besides, she is threatening suicide because of this, how can I sit idly by and abandon a life?"
