Chapter 118 They're all dead
After entering the city, Yu Zhiyi and her group wandered around aimlessly.
This is a county, and although it is not as prosperous as Shengjing, it is still considered wealthy compared to other counties.
Even some remote county towns are not as bustling as Gaoliang County.
As the crowd walked along, it began to stir: "Weren't we supposed to be here to rescue people? Why are we wandering around?"
"I knew this woman was just creating a gimmick."
"Hey, I should have gone back with the princess. Now I've offended her terribly, and I didn't even get to see the excitement. What a loss!"
The crowd chattered amongst themselves, their voices not quiet at all.
Yu Zhiyi could naturally hear it.
She didn't care.
Suddenly, she stopped in her tracks.
Everyone followed her gaze, their expressions changing slightly. Some of the more compassionate people even covered their mouths.
On the street ahead, a ragged beggar lay on the ground, his body barely moving, looking as if he were dead.
A chipped, broken bowl sat to one side of his head, and inside the bowl was a handful of copper coins.
But this person seemed oblivious to the money in the bowl, remaining half-dead and lying there. Yu Zhiyi and the others walked dozens of steps, but the person didn't move an inch.
Most importantly, the person's hands and feet were hollow!
When they were less than three meters away from the man, Yu Zhiyi suddenly spoke up: "Uncle Zhang, this man is so pitiful, should we give him some money?"
Grandpa Zhang was taken aback and looked at Yu Zhiyi with some confusion.
She knew perfectly well that he had no money...
But since the person had saved his life and was now helping him find his son, he felt awkward refusing and could only awkwardly say, "Could you lend me the money first? You can deduct it from my charity fund."
The moment Grandpa Zhang spoke, the beggar on the ground suddenly raised his head, revealing a face so dirty that its original features were unrecognizable.
Grandpa Zhang was startled and instinctively looked over.
However, he didn't think too much about it and wanted to say something to Yu Zhiyi.
But the next instant, he turned around abruptly, stared intently at the beggar, and uttered a sound from his throat: "Tuwa?!"
The beggar let out a sob and struggled to lunge at Old Man Zhang.
He has lost both his hands and both his feet, so he can't stand up at all, and he even has difficulty sitting up on his own!
But at this moment, he acted like a madman, disregarding his physical limitations, and insisted on lunging at Old Man Zhang.
Old Zhang, leaning on his cane, walked towards the beggar. When he got there, he threw down his cane, shakily caught the person who lunged at him, and tried to wipe the person's face clean with his sleeve.
Those who followed behind were all bewildered by this sudden turn of events.
They had initially thought Yu Zhiyi was being nosy, but when she asked Old Zhang for money, the young master who had previously criticized her couldn't help but speak up again.
Then, completely bewildered by this turn of events, the question that was about to be asked stuck in his throat, and he couldn't bring himself to ask it anymore.
However, Yu Zhiyi's gaze did not linger on the pitiful father and son, but instead turned to the middle-aged man not far away.
The girl in blue also looked over, and then frowned.
She rarely uses the phrase "shifty-eyed" to describe someone because she always feels that the word is too exaggerated and has a somewhat insulting connotation.
But now, the word has become concrete.
Moreover, as soon as the man saw them looking over, he turned and ran.
Yu Zhiyi immediately took action.
She instructed the coachman to stay and look after the Zhang family father and son, while she ran after the man in the direction he had left.
Although she was described as "chasing," her pace was neither hurried nor slow, more like a leisurely stroll than chasing someone.
The young man couldn't hold back any longer: "Hey, what are you doing! If you don't hurry up, that person will get away!"
"If you think I'm too slow, then don't chase after us. Wait for us to bring back good news."
Young master: "..."
No, is this the normal reaction a person should have?
Shouldn't it be—if you think I'm too slow, then go catch up with me yourself?
However, no matter how anxious he was, seeing that the girl in blue did not question Yu Zhiyi, he could only suppress his anger.
Just as Yu Zhiyi and the others were strolling leisurely through the streets and alleys, the shifty-eyed man quickly passed through several alleys and finally rushed to the outside of a courtyard.
The courtyard looked unremarkable, just like an ordinary house.
Strangely, all the houses around this one were empty.
If anyone lives nearby, they will notice that strange noises come from this house every day.
Sometimes it was screams, sometimes it was the painful moans of young boys and girls, and sometimes it was wild and wicked laughter.
The man's hand gripped the door knocker, knocking four times in a pattern of three long knocks followed by one short knock.
A moment later, a hushed voice came from inside the door: "Heavenly King!"
"Earth Tiger!"
The signal was successfully received. The man entered the room and said in a deep voice, "The family of a pig has come looking for us, and they've brought a group of important people with them."
“These people are dressed in gold and silver, and they have an extraordinary air about them. They must not be ordinary people. Once these people make a move, even adults won’t be able to protect us.”
The man who opened the door frowned: "Are you sure you didn't see wrong?"
"It can't be wrong!"
The shifty-eyed man said, "Let's hurry up and leave before they find us."
The man who opened the door was a little impatient and cursed, "What bad luck!" He said, "Then hurry up and leave."
Then he directed two old women to go out and keep watch while they packed up things and people.
There are many other disabled people in this courtyard, just like Old Zhang's son, but they are disabled in different ways; some have lost an arm, and some have broken a leg.
But almost no one suffered as badly as Zhang Laohan's son, whose hands and feet were completely useless.
The only thing they had in common was that they had all become mute.
These people had initially felt a glimmer of hope when they heard that a big shot had arrived and might investigate this place.
But when they heard these people skillfully planning to move their positions, they despaired again.
Suddenly, an old woman rushed in, panicking, "Something terrible has happened! Two men are going door to door asking for water, and they've already reached the next street. They don't seem like people who need a drink; they must be that nobleman's men."
The shifty-eyed man punched the air with his fist: "So fast!"
He then looked at the disabled people filling the yard, his eyes flashing with a fierce light: "It seems we can't bring these pigs with us."
The contact frowned: "You mean, you killed them all?"
The contact person is the leader of this group.
"Otherwise what?"
Although the shifty-eyed man wasn't the leader, he was more like a strategist.
He said coldly, "Although they have all become mute, they have seen our faces and are not deaf. In any case, there is a risk of exposing us, so it's easier to kill them."
With so many disabled people, including those with leg disabilities, taking them along would be a burden.
Others wholeheartedly agreed.
With so many people, not a single one of them felt that killing was wrong.
To save time, all of them, regardless of gender, picked up the butcher's knife.
