Chapter 111: Entanglement
After saying this, the nanny in a blue-gray Taoist robe made a move to close the door.
The chief eunuch at the palace gate was supporting the emperor, and he couldn't believe that a nanny could neglect the emperor to such an extent.
He immediately stepped forward to block the door and started to scold: "Are you blind? How dare you be so disrespectful to the current emperor?"
The nanny stood inside the door, looking quietly at the angry eunuch, with no panic on her face.
Seeing a eunuch like her really broadened my horizons. A servant who was abandoned by the queen could be so arrogant.
The emperor stood outside the palace gate and was rarely angry. He just calmly walked into Kunning Palace.
The chief eunuch immediately opened the palace door respectfully and pushed the maid standing nearby aside: "Your Majesty, please watch your step."
When you enter Kunning Palace, you will see withered yellow leaves covering the entire courtyard. The entire courtyard was silent, and no palace maids could be seen moving around.
The once magnificent Kunning Palace has become dim due to years of disrepair. After more than 20 years, the emperor set foot here again and everything seemed like a lifetime ago.
The nanny beside them had already walked into the hall when the two were not paying attention. Walk through the main hall to the side hall on the east side.
Entering the side hall, the first thing that catches your eye is the portrait of the Three Pure Ones on the main wall. Under the portrait is a thin figure wearing an indigo-colored gown, with her black hair tied into a bun with a white jade hairpin. There is no more decoration on the body.
Queen Wang was kneeling on a bright yellow cushion and meditating.
Sensing someone approaching, the person who was meditating opened his eyes, his eyes were as calm as a deep pool, without any sadness or joy.
"Miss, the emperor is here." said the nanny standing behind her.
There was a ripple on the queen's peaceful face, her brows furrowed slightly and a hint of disgust rose in her eyes. But there was no action. Still kneeling on the mat, he gently closed his eyes.
The emperor stood at the door of the inner hall and witnessed the conversation between the two. His eyes fell on the queen's back and he felt an indescribable bitterness in his heart as if something had accumulated.
"Shu Ran, you still resent me after all these years? Or you still refuse to see me?" The emperor looked at her back and said as he moved to sit down on the cushion beside her.
The eunuch following the emperor was surprised to see this scene. He thought the emperor disliked the queen but he didn't expect there was some hidden story.
After thinking for a moment, he thought that the empress had been obsessed with Taoism for so many years and locked herself up in Kunning Palace without the emperor interfering. If he didn't care, why would he let her keep the position of queen for so many years?
Wang Shuran opened her eyes and looked calmly at the portraits of the Three Pure Ones on the wall. He didn't care what the emperor next to him said.
"You haven't changed. You are as beautiful as I remember you." The emperor looked at the still beautiful face with an obsessed gaze.
More than 20 years have passed, and time has been kind to her, leaving no trace on her face. Wearing a Taoist robe makes his temperament more cool and detached.
He was vaguely reminded of the stunning glimpse he had under the peach tree in mid-spring. This single sight had disturbed his mind, and he was haunted by demons from that moment on.
He used all means to get her, but he could never warm her heart. There is always a dead person living in her heart. No matter how hard he tried, in her heart he was still no better than a dead man.
He was jealous, and he was so jealous that he went crazy and did something irreparable. And Zhao Fangye is the evidence of his incompetence, ugliness and meanness.
It is also a thorn in the hearts of both of them, causing unbearable pain whenever it is touched.
The emperor didn't care that she didn't respond, and continued, "Yer is really like you, that's why I hate him. You all wanted to rebel against me, but you couldn't do it, but now Yeer has done it."
They have the same stubbornness and pride.
"Speaking of which, your good son is about to attack the Forbidden City. Ahem... " The emperor took a deep breath to calm himself down. After a while, he thought of something and laughed to himself: "Hahaha, you haven't seen that idiot from the Song family, have you?"
"I heard that you gave him a red sandalwood bracelet?" The emperor said with a pleased look on his face, "That was the marriage I personally arranged for Ye'er. It's a pity that you didn't see it. Ye'er really liked it."
"A man...hahaha..." The emperor's words were full of sarcasm.
Since he can't get it, he won't allow others to get it. This was true for the Queen and Zhao Fangye as well. He only feels happy when everyone is suffering.
Wang Shuran listened to him talking to himself like a madman, and a trace of impatience flashed in her eyes. Stand up and walk out. Unexpectedly, the emperor suddenly grabbed her sleeve.
Mammy subconsciously wanted to help but it was too late: "Miss!"
Wang Shuran staggered and fell to the ground. The emperor's eyes were gloomy and he pinched her jaw, saying with a paranoid tone: "Shu Ran, you are finally willing to look me in the eye."
Reaching out his hand to stroke her eyebrows, the emperor showed pity in his eyes: "Shu Ran, they are not like you... nor are they as good as you."
With her jaw pinched tightly, Wang Shuran's disgust grew stronger and she looked away, preferring to be held hostage rather than reach out and touch him.
The emperor's tired face looked increasingly sinister, his eyes filled with madness and paranoia. He whispered slowly in her ear: "I know you don't want to see me. But you have to see me. We will live together and die together."
As soon as he finished speaking, Queen Wang suddenly looked up and confronted him with angry eyes. The calmness accumulated over many years of retreat collapsed at this moment: "You are dreaming!"
She was imprisoned in this palace during her lifetime and could not be freed. After her death, she had to be buried in the same coffin with the man who killed her beloved.
She absolutely won't allow it! no way!
"Someone, come! Give me some wine!"
The emperor pushed her away and stood up, his eyes blank. He already knew the answer but he didn't care. He had nothing to cling to except that she would be his for the rest of his life.
Soon someone brought the poisoned wine. The nanny watched the eunuch slowly approaching with the poisoned wine and hurriedly stood in front of Queen Wang.
"You...don't come over here!" Her face was pale, and she had no idea that her lady was going to suffer this disaster.
What the young lady hated most in her life was being forced into the palace and being buried with her enemy after death. This would make her die with regrets.
Queen Wang lay on the ground, looking at the poisoned wine on the tray. Her eyes were filled with hatred instead of fear. She couldn't die. If she died, she would never have the chance to escape the emperor's shackles.
"Shuran, don't be afraid." The emperor picked up the wine glass from the tray and slowly approached Queen Wang.
The nanny stood in front of him with a vigilant look on her face. She looked really annoying and the emperor frowned.
The eunuch standing by knew what was going on and ordered someone to drag the nanny away.
“Miss!! Miss!!”
"Shut her mouth!"
Without any hindrance, the emperor put the wine glass to her lips and whispered to her, as if what was in the glass was nectar rather than poison.
"Be good, drink it."
In the quiet side hall, only incense and candles were burning slowly. The eunuch carrying the tray silently retreated to the door, lowered his head and dared not peek.
Queen Wang stared at the hideous face in front of her with her eyes fixed, and raised her hand in the Taoist robe to reach for the wine cup at her lips as if she was desperate to die.
There was sadness in the emperor's eyes but he did not take back the hand that was offering the wine.
Just when Queen Wang was about to touch the wine glass, the emperor suddenly let go of it.
She had already reached out and quickly pulled off the jade hairpin on her head.
With a plop, the wine fell to the ground. Swallowed up the subtle sound of the hairpin entering the throat.
The wine splashed and wet the corners of Queen Wang's clothes. The warm blood spurted out of her throat with a "puzzle", dyeing the white jade hairpin deep red.
The emperor held the bloody hand at his neck with trembling hands: "Shu Ran...as expected...hate..."
Blood flowed out from the corners of his mouth, and the words he uttered due to his damaged vocal cords sounded like the hissing of broken window paper.
"Ah!!! Your Majesty!! Someone come and save you!!!"
"Someone come quickly!!"
The chief eunuch came back to his senses first, and was almost frightened to death when he saw the scene before him.
Queen Wang's eyes stayed still for a moment, and she was awakened by the eunuch's shrill voice. The slippery and warm touch on her hands and the smell of blood in her nose made her feel nauseous.
But she didn't let go and instead pushed the hairpin in an inch deeper. She was not afraid of death, but she absolutely did not want to be buried together with the man in front of her.
At such a close distance, the emperor carefully watched every expression on her face. The hatred on her face was so obvious and undisguised.
So... strong...
The emperor forced himself to smile, held her hand and stared at the person in front of him: "I'm sorry..."
After saying this, Queen Wang's hand was pulled forcefully. The entire hairpin was completely embedded in the flesh.
When Zhao Fangye arrived at Kunning Palace, he saw the emperor lying in a pool of blood. The queen was kneeling on a mat covered in blood with her eyes closed.
The incense burner on the table emitted faint purple smoke, and the portraits of the Three Pure Ones on the wall had peaceful and serene faces, as if they were oblivious to the tragic scene before them.
