"That was...wonderful!"
Shen Ning sighed with emotion. Indeed, Shen Shu's life was full of unimaginable absurdities, and there was nothing she wouldn't do outrageously.
They actually killed someone.
Shen Ning did not show any kindness in upholding justice for Yu'er and her child. Yu'er was Shen Shu's maid, and she gave birth to a child of the Wei family. Why would she go and sympathize with her?
However, this did not stop her from causing trouble for Shen Shu and Han Yin.
Shen Ning sent her informant, who was hidden in the Wei family, to Shuntian Prefecture to tell the whole story, including where Shen Shu was hiding.
When the Shuntian Prefecture saw that the Han family was beyond their control, they directly handed the matter over to the Dali Temple.
Lu Hong, the Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, had already positioned himself against the Han family by handling Shen Ming's case. Others might be wary of the Han family, but he was not.
So they led men to the Han family to arrest Shen Shu. With the precise location provided by Shen Ning, Shen Shu was captured.
The Wei family brought out Aunt Yu's body, and everyone present was a witness. Shen Shu was sentenced to exile.
The Dali Temple betrayed them, and the case was put on the Emperor's desk and sealed. The Duke of Han would not use his power to retrieve his son's plaything, and even if Han Yin had the ability, he was not in the mood for it now.
He lost his wife, but he still had his son, and even the child that Shen Shu miscarried didn't stir any ripples in his heart.
A well-behaved and adorable child who can already call out "Dad" is far superior to that lump of blood, not to mention he also has a mother who just died.
The Han family doesn't care; the Wei family is the plaintiff. As for Wei Congwen, he can't even keep the official position he just got, let alone save Shen Shu. Besides, he has no right to save her now.
It was a foregone conclusion that Shen Shu would be exiled, and Shen Ning thought that the matter was settled for the time being, but she did not expect that she had overlooked a fool.
Shen Yu ran back and knelt straight in front of Shen Ning, her neck held high: "Sister, as long as you save Second Sister, I will not hold your attempt to kill me against you."
Shen Ning: "...Huh?"
"Hahaha!" Shen Ning was so angry that she laughed, as if she had seen the biggest joke in the world: "How can you hold a grudge against me? You're not thinking of going to the government to sue me, are you? Where's the evidence? Where are the witnesses?"
She slammed her hand on the table and pointed at him: "You accidentally fell into the river and were rescued by Young Master Zhu. I offered you a large sum of money to take you to Dongyue to broaden your horizons and cleanse your stupid mind that only knows how to eat, drink and have fun. And what did you do? You went out for a trip and this is all you've improved?"
"You think you're so capable? Then go save Chen Shu! Don't come back begging me!"
They wanted to take advantage of her but then accused her first, acting all high and mighty, as if she should be grateful for their help. Is she some kind of despicable person? Does she owe them anything?
Shen Yu felt he was the victim, and thought that he could use his position on Shen Ning's mistakes to negotiate with her.
Thinking about the fear and grievances he had suffered these past few days, he felt that it was already magnanimous of him to use the excuse of forgiving Shen Ning's crimes to negotiate with her.
He even felt like he'd lost out.
But Shen Ning's few words left him bewildered. How come it seemed like he was the one who was wrong?
Suddenly losing all leverage, he no longer dared to be arrogant: "Let's put aside my trip to Dongyue for now, but you still have to save my second sister."
Shen Ning gave him a cold look: "Save her? Are you out of your mind? What crime did she commit? Murder!"
"Killing an adult is one thing, but not even sparing a newborn child—how can such crimes be absolved? Do you think you can atone with just your words?"
Shen Yu became anxious: "That was our Shen family's maid. She's dead, but the child isn't dead yet. Why should Second Sister be exiled? Second Sister has never been able to bear hardship. How is she supposed to live? Sister, are you just going to watch Second Sister suffer?"
Listen to this, is this even human language?
Doesn't someone else's life matter? They're all dead, but Shen Shu can't even suffer a little? Is this what he learned from years of studying?
If killing someone allows one to live a carefree life, what is the point of the law?
Shen Ning: "Then I'll just suffer. It's not like I'll die."
"Sister!" Shen Yu knelt forward and pleaded, "Good sister, I beg you, our parents have passed away, and the three of us siblings depend on each other for survival. You can't abandon your second sister."
Did you suddenly remember that they were siblings who depended on each other for survival?
Shen Ning was too lazy to argue with him. Arguing with an idiot would only make her angry and wouldn't do her any good.
Anyway, she didn't expect Shen Yu to come to his senses.
"The case was fabricated by the Court of Judicial Review; how can I possibly save it? This case is now common knowledge; who dares to overturn the verdict?"
“Of course, it’s always possible to save someone, it just depends on you.” Shen Ning smiled gently: “Since you care so much about Shen Shu, you can wait for her on her way to exile and kidnap her when she’s not looking. But you have to be careful not to get caught. Kidnapping a prisoner is tantamount to treason, and your whole family will be executed.”
“There aren’t many family members, so it’s okay for them to die. It’s just a pity for my father. He was a loyal man all his life and was buried in a blessed land bestowed by the emperor. I hope that because of his children’s misfortune, he was dug up after only a few years.”
Shen Yu stared at Shen Ning in shock, speechless for a moment.
No matter how much he cared for his second sister, he couldn't go over his parents' shoulders. How could he be so foolish as to cause his parents to be exposed?
"Isn't there any other way? Sister, aren't you and Princess Chang Le very close?"
Shen Ning sneered, "So, you want Prince Qi to save Shen Shu? How dare Shen Shu? How dare I? Am I worthy?"
"Instead of wasting your time bothering me, you should bother Wei Congwen. The Wei family is the plaintiff in this matter, and Wei Congwen is still an official. He loves Shen Shu so much, how can he do nothing?"
