Chapter Five: Putting on Sacks

Shen Ning, accompanied by her maid Yu Zhu, hid behind a rockery in the west gate, holding a burlap sack in one hand and a wooden stick in the other.

"Miss, what are we doing here?"

Yu Zhu squatted on the ground, her little face flushed, not from the heat, but from mosquito bites, and more than one bite at that.

The young lady hurriedly had her find a sack and a stick, and led her here to squat. Not only was her behavior strange, but she was also forbidden from wearing any jewelry or sachets. The mosquitoes swarmed over her like wolves seeing meat.

Shen Ning gripped the wooden stick tightly, resisting the urge to scratch. She refused to believe that a small act of impatience could ruin a great plan.

The two squatted there for a full quarter of an hour, practically devoured by mosquitoes, until finally...

"They're here!"

What's coming?

Footsteps approached from afar. Before Yu Zhu could even see who it was, Shen Ning had already ripped off a sack, put it over Yu Zhu's head, and then raised a stick to smash it down hard.

"Who is it? What are you doing? Who is it? Ah...why are you hitting me, ah!!!"

It was a man, and his voice sounded familiar.

Yu Zhu was stunned for a moment. Seeing the young lady fighting so enthusiastically, she picked up another stick without thinking and joined in.

Neither the master nor the servant spoke, they held their breath and smashed the sticks fiercely, the only sounds being the muffled thud of the sticks hitting people and the man's screams.

"Ah, stop hitting me! Stop hitting me!"

Do you even know who I am...?

"I am the eldest son of the Wei family... and your young lady's..."

Yu Zhu was stunned. The eldest son of the Wei family, isn't this her future son-in-law?

Then she saw her own family member strike her hard with a stick, and the person who had been howling just moments before fell silent instantly.

"Young Miss?"

Yu Zhu was stunned, her voice trembling. Why did Miss hit her future son-in-law? He's not moving anymore, does that mean he's dead?

Shen Ning grabbed the stunned little girl and said, "Don't worry, you won't die. Let's go!"

She had no intention of taking a life; she was hitting Wei Congwen's legs.

A man who gets engaged to the older sister but then seduces the younger sister and secretly goes to the younger sister's house to meet her in secret deserves to be beaten to death.

But Shen Ning didn't want him to die, otherwise who would put on the show she wanted to see?

They hadn't walked far with Yuzhu when they suddenly heard a piercing scream: "Heavens! Brother Wei, what happened to you...?"

"Second Miss?"

Yu Zhu felt that this day was more shocking than the previous ten years she had lived. The eldest young lady hit her future son-in-law, and the future son-in-law appeared outside the second young lady's courtyard.

The eldest daughter and her son-in-law, the son-in-law and the second daughter?!

"......"

It took Yu Zhu a long time to find her voice: "How could they do this?"

Her soon-to-be husband and her own sister betrayed her; no wonder the young lady went to put a sack over her head and beat them up.

He deserves to be killed!

"Alright, I'm in a good mood now. Go and get me a jar of peach blossom wine."

Having vented her anger, Shen Ning was genuinely happy, but in Yu Zhu's eyes, the young lady was forcing a smile, using it to hide her sadness, and trying to drown her sorrows in alcohol.

She was tongue-tied and didn't know how to comfort the young lady, so she could only silently go and get her some wine, and also asked the kitchen to quickly prepare some snacks to go with the wine, because drinking only alcohol could easily damage her stomach.

"Miss, I'm back!"

A woman dressed in blue entered carrying a bundle, looking travel-worn but with a smile on her face.

Shen Ning was about to drink when she heard this and looked up. Instantly, her eyes stung and tears streamed down her face.

The woman was startled: "Miss, why are you crying?"

Yu Zhu, who had also been looking towards the door, turned around immediately upon hearing this and saw Shen Ning with tears streaming down her face, and felt a pang of heartache.

"Young Miss..."

The woman at the door quickly put down her bundle and came over: "Yuzhu, how are you taking care of the young lady? Who bullied her?"

"I didn't, I..."

Yu Zhu was speechless, but she couldn't reveal the shameful affair between her future son-in-law and the second young lady. She felt wronged and heartbroken.

"I'll go get a basin of hot water. You watch over the young lady."

Shen Ning didn't actually cry much; it was just that her emotions overwhelmed her at that moment, and she couldn't control her tears.

Wiping away my tears, I gazed at the vibrant and beautiful face before me, and after the sorrow came the joy of regaining what I had lost.

"Sister Liuying, I miss you so much."

Liu Ying, another close maid of Shen Ning, was bought by Shen Ning when she was five years old and grew up with her. She is a year older than Shen Ning and is like an older sister to her.

Upon hearing this, Liu Ying's heart softened completely. She gently wiped Liu Ying's face, as if taking care of a younger sister: "I missed you too, Miss. Now that you're back, why are you still crying at your age?"

Shen Ning's eyes were red, and she finally snuggled into her arms, feeling wronged.

That's not the reason.

In her past life, she betrothed Liu Ying to Liang Zhuo, the son of Uncle Liang. But Liang Zhuo fell in love with his younger sister, Shen Shu, without her knowing when.

He married Liu Ying because his parents had their eye on her. He wanted to avenge Shen Shu, but since he didn't dare to lay a hand on Shen Ning, he took his anger out on the people around her.

He had always kept his true feelings hidden, and Shen Ning was only willing to marry Liu Ying to him because she felt she knew him well. Little did she know that it would turn out to be a trap.

After the marriage, he revealed his true colors and subjected Liuying to all sorts of beatings, scoldings, and torment.

The Liang family was Shen Ning's biggest support, and Liu Ying didn't want to put Shen Ning in a difficult position, so she kept quiet about it.

Even though Shen Ning noticed something was wrong, she tried her best to hide it. Seeing this, Liang Zhuo became even more emboldened. He even beat Liu Ying after she became pregnant, beating her to death, resulting in the deaths of both her and her unborn child.

Shen Ning will always remember the last time she saw Liu Ying. She was so thin that she was unrecognizable, with not a single piece of good flesh on her body. It was a shocking sight.
