Chapter Sixty-Three: Serene and Tranquil, with Strands of Serenity

The girls in the brothel all use perfume. Although each one smells good, they all gather together every day, and the fragrances become mixed and even the nice ones become cloying and vulgar.

Shen Ning's scent was very faint, almost undetectable on ordinary days, and even now, up close, it was only a very faint trace.

It's not like the fragrance of flowers, nor the scent of cosmetics; it's subtle, cool, and serene, with delicate, lingering notes that are quite alluring.

It doesn't smell like it's been artificially scented; it's more like a woman's natural body fragrance.

It smells good if it hasn't been treated with those weird and awful things.

Tao Ji was lost in thought, hesitating whether she should actually sleep here tonight. In fact, she had only been teasing Yu Zhu and the others with flirtatious words before, and had not thought about actually sleeping with them. She had only sneaked over in the middle of the night to provoke them.

However, at this moment, Shen Ning, who was lying on one side, slowly opened her eyes. She did not move, and did not even turn her head.

Those clear eyes were especially deep in the night, which frightened Momohime so much that she froze.

Then Shen Ning closed her eyes.

Peach Princess was bewildered. Was she awake or not? If she opened her eyes, she should have seen her, so why were they closed again?

Peach Princess stood there frozen, her heart pounding and her skin crawling.

In the end, she slowly left the bed and disappeared into the night in a short while.

"Oh."

In the darkness of night, a mocking voice drifted away, barely audible.

The next morning, Shen Ning had just gotten up when she heard Tao Ji making Yu Zhu jump up and down in anger.

Tao Ji was overjoyed at successfully stealing Yu Zhu's base, but since she couldn't say it out loud, she tried to step on Yu Zhu's sore spots, just to see her get so angry that she couldn't do anything about it.

You're too green to compete with that little girl.

"Miss, waaaah..." Yu Zhu cried as she sought comfort from Shen Ning. She was so angry; this person was so annoying.

Shen Ning quickly comforted her, telling her not to upset the girl.

Tao Ji felt quite guilty when she saw Shen Ning come out. She didn't even dare to look Shen Ning in the eye. She secretly sized her up while having breakfast, but it didn't matter that Shen Ning was acting strangely or her expression didn't change. It was as if she knew nothing about what happened last night.

Tao Ji wasn't guilty at all. She loved to play around, and even if Shen Ning caught her climbing into her bed, she could still tease her with a smile.

But now he doesn't know if Shen Ning knows or not, especially since he was scared away by her just one look last night. He has a strange and unsettling feeling in his heart.

I want to confront them, but I'm also inexplicably afraid of something.

Momohime was preoccupied with her own thoughts and ate absentmindedly. By the time she realized her vision was becoming blurry, she had no time to react.

"Thump!"

The person collapsed onto the table.

Yu Zhu was startled: "Whoa! What's wrong with her?"

Liu Ying wasn't surprised. She took out a rope from somewhere and handed it to her: "Don't you hate her? Tie her up, don't let her run away."

Yu Zhu: "..." It seems something happened that she doesn't know about, but she couldn't be happier about kidnapping someone.

Yu Zhu had little experience in tying people up, so she specifically sought help from Mo Lin, who was skilled at tying up prey.

If they can tie up a wild boar, how much less a mere girl?

Yu Zhu tied the person up and placed them on the bed. Shen Ning did nothing else. After a night, all her emotions calmed down, and now she had to get down to business.

Shen Ning had already entrusted Liu Ying with the affairs of the mansion, so whether Aunt Liang left or not had little impact.

When Liu Ying was too busy, she would bring along a clever maid and an older woman. Together, the three of them could always keep things in order in the mansion.

But the things that Butler Liang had in his hands were not so easy.

Butler Liang didn't have this much power before. He worked with Aunt Liang to manage the Shen family's house and social interactions until Shen Ning's father passed away and her mother stopped managing things, at which point these matters fell into Butler Liang's hands.

After Madam Shen passed away, Shen Ning forbade any relatives from touching the family property. In order to protect this wealth, she had to rely on Steward Liang, who eventually became the person in charge of the Shen family mansion and shops.

Shen Ning gradually sidelined him, and now she has taken over all the affairs. She can handle the accounts, but she is really not capable of handling many things that require the housekeeper's intervention.

For example, delivering festival gifts to each household and bribing the stewards of other families who bring gifts—this couldn't be done personally by Shen Ning, the head of the household.

If the head of the household has to personally deliver a gift on a regular holiday, others will definitely look down on your family.

Shen Ning could also let Liu Ying serve as the housekeeper, but it would be fine at home. However, if they went out, Liu Ying, being a young lady, would inevitably suffer some losses and be looked down upon.

She couldn't bear to wrong her.

Shen Ning thought and thought, but couldn't find a solution for a while.

Butler Liang's departure was so sudden that she was caught off guard.

Shen Ning was troubled by the lack of a housekeeper, while the Wei family was in turmoil again because two housekeepers had appeared.

Shen Shu woke up and insisted that Steward Liang help her manage her dowry. However, Steward Liang only looked through it once and found that the shops under the dowry were in various deficits and the silver in the storeroom did not match the numbers.

Can the Wei family admit that they used their daughter-in-law's dowry? Of course not.

But the money has already been spent, and they can't make it back. The only way is to get Shen Shu to admit that she took it out to make up for the shortfall and that she won't ask for it back.

Wei Congwen was angry all night and only calmed down after being comforted by Yu'er several times. He wants a divorce.

It is said that one should marry a virtuous wife. The wife does not necessarily have to be someone you like, but she must be virtuous and kind, otherwise the family will not be peaceful.

Now his home is in turmoil.

Although he didn't like Shen Ning, if he had married Shen Ning, he might not be facing his current predicament.
