Chapter 1064 Side Story: Evening in the City (127)

"Jingnan, what's wrong?"

"Oh, it's nothing." Huo Jingnan came back to his senses.

The director looked in the direction he was looking, chuckled, and explained, "Look at them? They must be family members of some drug addicts. Visits here are strictly controlled, requiring multiple layers of approval. They're waiting here for the approval results, and only after they receive permission can they go in to visit."

"Mm." Huo Jingnan nodded.

He Yining and Chen Li glanced over casually a few times, but neither of them recognized him. However, as a former special forces soldier, Huo Jingnan had an unparalleled ability to remember people's faces.

He was quite certain that the stylish young woman was the same woman he had seen in the family photo in the living room when he last visited the He family—He Nianhui's older sister, He Yining.

And that middle-aged woman...

Huo Jingnan recalled the time Lin Zhaojiang hosted a welcome dinner for them at the hotel. Song Wan went out to buy things for Yuan Yuan, and he also went to the restroom. When he came out, he saw Song Wan grabbing a middle-aged woman's hand and calling her "Mom."

He didn't think much of it at the time, just glanced at it, and went back to his room to continue eating.

However, he couldn't be mistaken; that middle-aged woman was the person standing before him!

So, she is Song Wan's mother, then what's the situation with her appearing in a place like this with He Yining?

At this moment, He Yining noticed Huo Jingnan.

He was exceptionally handsome, but his eyes held a wary and cold quality, like those of a wolf in the jungle.

He Yining's heart skipped a beat, and she subconsciously turned away to avoid him. After thinking about it, she felt it was inappropriate and decided to leave first.

"Hey, where are you going?" Chen Li suddenly grabbed her arm. "We'll be going in soon!"

"I'm not going."

"you……"

Unable to bear her daughter's inconsistency, Chen Li shouted, "That's your brother! He's suffering inside! Look at him!"

"Shut up!" He Yining glared at her fiercely, enunciating each word clearly, "I've said it before, I have nothing to do with you! Get out of here!"

Chen Li stumbled as she was thrown, while He Yining ran away without looking back.

Just as Chen Li nearly fell to the ground, Huo Jingnan caught her from behind. "Auntie, be careful!"

Chen Li didn't recognize him.

This time, being so close, Huo Jingnan was 100% certain that this was the same Song Wan's mother he had seen in the hotel.

"Auntie, what was that just now...?"

Overwhelmed with grief, Chen Li beat her chest and stamped her feet, crying out, "Why is my life so miserable... My son is in rehab, and my daughter won't talk to me... My life is so bitter!"

Huo Jingnan's eyes flickered slightly, but he said nothing more. He handed Chen Li over to the police officers at the drug rehabilitation center, letting her go in with them for a visit.

"Old comrade, I know you mean well," the station chief whispered to him, "but stay away from old ladies like that in the future, and don't help them up easily, or you'll regret it if they try to extort you!"

"Hey, what are you afraid of?"

"That lady from just now," the director said, pursing his lips. "I remember her. She's a master at throwing tantrums and acting like a spoiled brat! Her son is here for drug rehabilitation because he offended Lin Zhaojiang of the Zhonglin Group... Anyway, you should avoid her from now on, understand?"

"Then was that girl her daughter?"

"I don't know about that; I've never seen it before."

Huo Jingnan nodded and waved goodbye.

Song Wan is making a new type of dessert in the kitchen. Now, only the last step is needed to complete it.

The aroma wafting from the oven filled the entire small apartment, adding a touch of warmth to the space.

Lin Zhaojiang wasn't idle either. He helped her tidy up her desk, sorted out her writing materials, and poured some dog food into a small bowl in the corner of the living room.

Hearing the sound of dog food, Fat Tiger waddled over and rubbed against Lin Zhaojiang's feet affectionately.

Lin Zhaojiang patted its head.

This little German Shepherd is only a little over a month old; he and Song Wan chose it together at the pet store. They had always wanted to have a pet together, and when they were choosing, they wanted a beautiful cat.

But to their surprise, the day they entered the pet store, Fat Tiger's mother was about to give birth to her cubs.

The shop owner was a kind-looking old lady who was also an experienced veterinarian. She asked Lin Zhaojiang and Song Wan to wait a moment, and soon she successfully delivered five cubs to Fat Tiger's mother.

Song Wan went forward curiously to take a look. Just then, a puppy that hadn't even opened its eyes yet suddenly stretched out its little paw at her. The old lady laughed and said, "Miss, raising a pet also requires fate. It seems you and this little guy are quite destined for each other!"

And so, Lin Zhaojiang and Song Wan took the puppy home. It was born stronger than its brothers and sisters, so they named it Fat Tiger.

Fat Tiger lived up to expectations; ever since he arrived, he has been an enormous eater, even when he was still a puppy.

Lin Zhaojiang especially liked it, not because it was cute, but because having it gave him even more reason to come here every day and stay all day long.

"Fat Tiger, how tall will you grow?" After it finished eating, Lin Zhaojiang held its little paws and made it stand up, smiling as he said, "You're a purebred German Shepherd, you'll definitely be tall and strong in the future, so you'll have to guard the house well then..."

He lowered his voice and whispered into Fat Tiger's little ear, "If any other man dares to come in, pounce on him and bite him! Do you hear me?"

Fat Tiger stared at him with his big, black eyes, as if he understood what he was saying. He whimpered twice, wagged his little tail, and jumped into his arms.

Lin Zhaojiang laughed even more heartily.

Ever since Song Wan first let him in, he'd come to her little apartment almost every day, practically making it his home. He couldn't help but marvel at how he could finally live here, and not only live here, but also keep a dog—a dog that was so intelligent and understanding…

However, he is not as good as Gian in one aspect—he cannot stay overnight here.

Thinking of this, his eyes darkened, and he left Fatty Tiger aside.

Fat Tiger squatted obediently yet bewilderedly at his feet, whimpering at him. Lin Zhaojiang tossed him a ball, telling him to play by himself.

Fat Tiger obediently ran away.

Lin Zhaojiang was a little depressed. He sat blankly on the sofa, watching the petite figure busy in the kitchen, and sighed helplessly.

Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of something draped over the sofa armrest. He picked it up casually and examined it; it looked like… a scarf?

Lin Zhaojiang was taken aback. He put it around his neck, and it fit perfectly!

A warm feeling instantly welled up in his heart, with a sweet taste. This was clearly Song Wan's handiwork. She had always been skillful with her hands and had knitted sweaters and vests for him before, but he hadn't appreciated it then and had taken her efforts for granted.

Now... he can't afford to miss this opportunity again!

Lin Zhaojiang, wearing a scarf, stood in front of the mirror and couldn't help but laugh.

At that moment, Song Wan was carrying freshly baked desserts out of the kitchen.

Upon seeing him looking in the mirror, a look of surprise flashed across her face. After a moment of stunned silence, she asked softly, "What...what are you doing?"
