Jiang Can looked at her questioningly, but still followed her instructions and closed the door tightly.
Yin Wenxi sat in the chair, staring unfocused at a certain spot outside the window, her expression solemn and gloomy.
“Mom…” Jiang Can squatted down in front of her.
“Can Can,” she said after a long while, slowly turning her head to look at the small box in the corner, “go and get that.”
Jiang Can was taken aback, her heart suddenly pounding like a drum, a feeling of unease washing over her.
She did as instructed; the small rosewood box wasn't heavy, and she could lift it with one hand. The box was decorated with delicate, subtle carvings, making it quite unique.
Jiang Can was also very curious about this box when she was a child, but Yin Wenxi never allowed her to touch it, so she suppressed her curiosity.
This is the first time in my life I've been so close to this box.
The box has a brass lock; these days, it's almost impossible to find such retro items.
“Can Can,” Yin Wenxi said sadly, “I’m not a good mother. I’ve always been a burden to you. I couldn’t even watch you get married.”
“Take this box back with you; consider it your dowry from your mother.”
"However... unless there's a special reason, it's best not to open it. Understand?"
Jiang Can was stunned, and was somewhat confused for a moment.
Is there some secret in this box?
The copper lock looked very sturdy and could not be opened easily, but Yin Wenxi did not mention the key at all.
The mother handed the box to her, but didn't give her the key or tell her what was inside...
What does this mean exactly?
Jiang Can wanted to ask more questions, but Yin Wenxi looked very tired and turned to lie down on the bed.
"You can go now." She turned her back to Jiang Can. "Mom wants to rest a little longer."
Jiang Can bit her lip.
The doctor said that my mother's illness is most vulnerable to stimulation.
Subconsciously, she felt that this box was something that could trigger her. So no matter how many doubts she had, she tried her best to hold back and gently closed the door.
Jiang Can carried the box home and put it in the same cabinet as the jewelry box.
She stared at it for a long time, then sighed softly. Just as she closed the cabinet door, she suddenly realized that the retro dark pattern on the box looked very familiar, as if she had seen it somewhere before.
But she couldn't remember.
She lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, as if walking through a maze with no end in sight, her mind a complete blank.
...
Fang Han booked return tickets for Huo Zhixing and showed him the several time slots she had chosen, but Huo Zhixing impatiently rejected them all.
Fang Han was at a loss, as this was the first time he had encountered such a situation.
Finally, looking completely bewildered, he consulted the renowned lawyer Ye Chen.
Great lawyers are all very perceptive; they can spot the clues at a glance and circle the earliest red-eye flight with a light laugh.
Fang Han was stunned and speechless for a long time.
"Young Master used to hate taking these late-night flights the most!"
"He'll really like it now."
"But... there are no first-class seats left on this flight."
"Just book him economy class, the kind where three people squeeze into a row!"
Fang Han broke out in a cold sweat.
"You can trust me!" Ye Chen said with experience. "Even if he had to hang on the plane to go back now, he would be willing!"
Sure enough, after booking a red-eye flight in economy class, Huo Zhixing promptly grabbed his luggage and rushed to board the plane in the middle of the night.
He arrived in Jiangzhou at three in the morning and rushed home without waiting.
However, I almost tripped over a pair of men's casual shoes as soon as I entered!
Huo Zhixing was startled; these shoes weren't his.
He slowed his pace and walked inside, and there was a man snoring!
His expression immediately changed. Fortunately, the house wasn't big, and he stepped into the living room in a few steps, only to find someone lying on the sofa...
Lu Lishan?!
Huo Zhixing slowly lowered his raised fist.
So there should be another one in the bedroom.
He quietly walked over, gently pushed open the bedroom door, and sure enough, saw Lin Yuqing and Jiang Can sleeping inside.
Huo Zhixing chuckled. It seemed that the little woman was afraid to live alone, so she called her best friend to keep her company. And Lu Lishan, who was worried about Lin Yuqing, must have shamelessly followed along.
He gently put down his luggage and carefully walked to Jiang Can's side.
Their bed was large, and Jiang Can slept with her back to Lin Yuqing, leaving a considerable gap between them. Jiang Can was hugging a pillow, which Huo Zhixing usually used.
He twitched his brow, smiled, and gently covered her with the blanket.
At this moment, Lin Yuqing, who was next to her, turned over, rubbed her sleepy eyes, and suddenly realized in the dim light that there was someone standing at the head of Jiang Can's bed!
"Ah—" Lin Yuqing screamed, instantly terrified!
She slapped Jiang Can awake with all her might, then rushed towards Huo Zhixing in one stride!
"Thief! Thief!"
"Lu Lishan, come in quickly!"
Before Huo Zhixing could react, Lin Yuqing threw a pillow at him and then shielded Jiang Can behind her.
Hearing the commotion, Lu Lishan rushed in and burst through the door, kicking the dark figure by the bedside without a word...
Huo Zhixing let out a soft cry.
Lu Lishan's kick landed squarely on his waist...
"Lu Lishan, you son of a bitch!"
"Um??"
Lu Lishan was about to kick a second time when his leg was raised and then stopped in mid-air, as if frozen in place.
The two women, still in shock, stared wide-eyed at what was happening before them.
Finally, Jiang Can realized what was happening, "Husband? It's you!"
She jumped off the bed, turned on the light, and after seeing clearly, threw herself into his arms.
Huo Zhixing's back was hurting badly, and he glared at Lu Lishan a few times.
