Chapter 212 The Mistress

The signing ceremony was not large in scale, but those who attended were all people with business dealings with Huo Zhixing and were of high status.

The western suburbs plot project involves interests from all sides, and this signing mainly involves several subcontracting construction and design companies.

All of these contracts require Jiang Can's signature to be valid.

In the lounge, Jiang Can was being made up by the chief designers of several top international cosmetic brands. On the clothes rack that her assistant had pushed over, several haute couture gowns glittered, like fairy gowns, all custom-made for her, one of a kind.

The stylists were discussing what clothes to match this makeup look, while Jiang Can waved her pen and solemnly signed her name on several documents.

Huo Zhixing knocked and entered. Seeing the woman's earnest expression, he couldn't help but feel a surge of affection. He walked over and sat down beside her, then waved to the stylists, who all left.

Only the two of them remained in the room, facing each other.

"It's all signed." Jiang Can handed him the contract.

"Hmm." Huo Zhixing took them and put them away, looking at her gently. "Do you know what these are?"

"Yes, I know. I've read every single clause, there's no problem!"

Huo Zhixing laughed.

He had actually reviewed these contracts long ago and made sure they were foolproof before letting her sign them.

However, this meticulous little woman actually read it again.

And you read it so quickly.

It seems that she is much smarter than he imagined.

"I just don't understand..." Jiang Can frowned, "Isn't this your company's project? Why do I need to sign it?"

“Because…” he thought for a moment, “Every project has both benefits and risks. I asked you to sign because I wanted to share the profits with you, and I also hoped that… if there are any risks, you would stand by my side and face them with me.”

"Yes, of course!" Jiang Can nodded, her small hand holding his arm, her eyes clear and pure, her charming appearance like an elf fallen to earth.

Huo Zhixing's heart skipped a beat. He touched her little face and then called in the stylists to help her choose clothes.

“I’m going to attend to some business up front,” he chuckled at her. “You can come with me once you’ve changed your clothes.”

"Okay!" Jiang Can agreed with a smile.

Huo Zhixing walked out of the lounge, but not long after, the door was opened again.

Jiang Can thought he had returned and turned around abruptly, only to be met with Yao Manning's cold gaze.

"Miss Jiang," she sneered, "did I disturb you?"

Jiang Can remained silent, looking at herself in the mirror.

“I don’t think this dress suits you very well.” Yao Manning waved her hand, signaling the maid to take the stylist out.

The door to the lounge slammed shut.

Jiang Can's heart skipped a beat. He looked at her warily and moved step by step toward the door.

"Don't worry, I won't do anything to you." Yao Manning was as arrogant as ever. "This is, after all, a signing ceremony that I planned. Even if I wanted to do something to you, I wouldn't do it on my own turf!"

"So what do you want to do?"

Yao Manning looked at her. "I just want to say a few words to you."

Jiang Can kept a certain distance from her, glancing around the room to see if there was anything he could use for self-defense.

“Jiang Can, I know that in Zhixing’s heart I will never be as good as you,” Yao Manning said softly. “But my marriage to him was arranged by my grandfather, and our Yao family and the Huo family have been friends for generations. This relationship is not something he can sever just because he wants to!”

"I've heard this many times before," Jiang Can said calmly. "Miss Yao, I also want to tell you that some things really can't be forced, and some people won't change their will just because you're a family friend."

“I understand,” Yao Manning stared at her. “Actually, I’ve given up. Since Zhixing doesn’t belong to me, I’ll just let go. He’ll be much happier with you.”

"But what I want to tell you is that you have to be good enough for him."

Jiang Can's heart tightened slightly.

"Heh, to be honest, I've seen this kind of occasion many times since I was a child, so I can handle it with ease. And I know that Zhixing doesn't like the media to be present, so I didn't arrange for any media outlets to come in today."

"Zhixing and I have some business to discuss with French clients in a bit," Yao Manning said with a slight smile. "Ms. Jiang, you must feel awkward standing next to us while we're talking, right? After all, you can't understand anything we're saying."

Jiang Can bit her lip and remained silent.

“You don’t have a family background that matches Zhixing’s, nor do you have the knowledge and abilities to match him. Even if you get married in the future, how far can you go?”

"Is Zhixing only a passing fancy to you? Once the gap between you widens, will he still treat you the same way?"

"Heh, Miss Jiang." Seeing that she remained silent, Yao Manning became even more smug. "I'm saying all this for your own good. You really should learn more. Being worthy of Zhixing is the most important thing, isn't it?"

"Learn more, earn more money, and you can save up a dowry for yourself... Heh, but I think no matter how much you save, it will probably not catch the eye of the Huo family, after all, they have seen too many good things."

"By the way, you can get some cheap stuff. Maybe they've never seen cheap things before, so they'll treasure them. Just like Zhixing has never seen a woman like you before, so he cherishes you. It's the same principle!"

Jiang Can took a deep breath.

The room was very quiet, as if one had fallen into a silent space.

She looked up and met Yao Manning's mocking gaze directly, her obsidian-like eyes filled with fearlessness and indifference.

"Miss Yao, after talking for so long, are you thirsty?" she chuckled.

Yao Manning frowned slightly.

“Yes, Miss Yao is right!” Jiang Can said calmly. “But you don’t need to worry about my dowry, Zhixing has prepared it all for me.”

Yao Manning's expression changed.

“You’ve heard of ‘Golden Wind and Jade Dew’, right? It’s a bracelet.” Jiang Can smiled. “And ‘Golden Jade Marriage’ is an emerald ring. I heard it was a gift from the emperor when someone in his family was a concubine.”

"What?" Yao Manning's eyes widened.

"What, you've never heard of this?" Jiang Can feigned sudden realization. "Oh, right! Before Zhixing gave me these things, he kept them personally. How could you have seen them!"

Yao Manning looked at her, clenching her back teeth tightly.

"However, Miss Yao is right. I should indeed improve myself... After all, the future mistress of the Huo family cannot be ignorant and incompetent!"

"You..." Yao Manning was speechless. "You're being far too presumptuous, acting like the mistress of the house!"

“That’s right!” Jiang Can rolled her eyes. “All of Zhi Xing’s cards are with me now, and I manage all his money. I’m not the mistress of the house, so who are you?”
