Sang Qing stared at the glittering ball in her hand, speechless with joy. Her large eyes blinked as she looked at Nie Xin, filled with a happiness she had never experienced in the first eighteen years of her life.
"It's just like..." Her voice choked with emotion, "It's just like plucking the stars from the sky!"
Nie Xin's lips unconsciously curled up into a smile.
Seeing her happy made him even happier than she was.
He didn't know why he had brought her here today, as if by some strange twist of fate.
He only knew that if he didn't say some things, they would explode inside him.
"Sang Qing, I..."
However, before he could finish speaking, Sang Qing excitedly interrupted him, "Uncle, what kind of place is this? It's like paradise!"
"I've been to many places in Manchester, but none of them are as beautiful as this!"
Nie Xin chuckled: "This is the Yin family's backyard, which is also the Sabah rainforest. Look closely at this firefly; it has two pairs of wings!"
Sang Qing looked at it, both surprised and delighted, and laughed exceptionally happily.
Nie Xin's gaze softened without her realizing it.
He remembered what Huo Zhixing had told him: as long as he saw Jiang Can smile, he felt that his life had been worthwhile.
He even mocked him for quite a while back then.
However, now...
Nie Xin smiled slightly, but when Sang Qing looked at him, he wiped the smile away and put on a serious expression.
"Um, Sang Qing," he hesitated for a while before whispering, "I have something to tell you."
The girl beside him remained motionless.
Nie Xin turned to the side, looking at the distant night sky and mountains.
"You've been in Southeast Asia for a while now, you should be settling in quite well, right?"
“I think you shouldn’t waste your time in that tailor shop… At your age, you should go to university, learn some skills, and you will have a bright future.”
“Most importantly…” Nie Xin touched her nose, her voice lowering, “that tailor shop owner has three sons, and she actually dares to dream of treating you as her daughter-in-law? Doesn’t she have any self-awareness at all!”
The surroundings were unusually quiet; Nie Xin could almost hear her own heartbeat.
With his back to Sang Qing, he didn't know if the girl would listen to him at all!
After a while, he took a deep breath and decided to say everything he wanted to say.
“Sang Qing… Although my father was a general in Southeast Asia, our family doesn’t have that many rules. My father isn’t the kind of person who tries to curry favor with the powerful. He said long ago that the criteria for choosing a daughter-in-law are that she is kind, ambitious, and has good character, and nothing else matters.”
Nie Xin laughed: "Actually, it's not uncommon for cousins to get married in Southeast Asia. My dad initially hoped that I could be with Jiang Can... Later, when Can Can married Zhi Xing, he felt it was a bit of a pity."
"But you've been by Can Can's side for a while now, and you've picked up some of her qualities, haven't you?"
“Sang Qing, these fireflies are only found in the rainforests of Sabah, they are unique in the world…” Nie Xin’s voice was gentle, “I brought you to see the fireflies, you… you should understand what this means, right?”
After saying all that in one breath, he felt as if all his energy had been drained.
He used to deliver even longer lines of dialogue fluently when filming movies.
Today, as he spoke these words, his whole body was tense, his muscles stiff, and his heart was pounding like a drum.
I've never been this nervous in my entire life...
Nie Xin waited for that sweet voice, as if she had returned to her student days, anxiously waiting for the teacher to give her a grade.
Time slipped away silently, ten seconds, twenty seconds...
One minute...
Five minutes.
Why is there no sound behind me?
Nie Xin felt strange. Could this girl have fainted from excitement after hearing his words?
He turned around abruptly.
Behind him, there was no one but the forest, the night, and the flickering fireflies!
"Sang Qing? Sang Qing!" Nie Xin panicked, stumbling forward as she searched. "Where did you go!"
"mulberry……"
"Uncle!"
That sweet voice suddenly came from the forest.
Besides her sweet voice and laughter, what also came before Nie Xin was the thing she was holding in her hand...
frog!
When Sang Qing handed the frog to him, Nie Xin was genuinely startled!
He had always disliked these cold-blooded, sticky creatures, but the frog stared intently at him with its large, dark eyes, and after a long while, let out a clear croak: "Croak—"
Nie Xin felt a "boom" and all the blood in her body rushed to her head!
Immediately afterward, a chill ran down his spine, and his vocal cords involuntarily emitted a loud cry: "Ah—"
Sang Qing was startled and instinctively gripped the little frog tightly, staring wide-eyed at Nie Xin.
In no time, Nie Xin's face turned as red as a boiled shrimp, her lips pressed into a thin line. After a moment of silence, her aura erupted violently like an earthquake:
"Sang Qing——"
The little girl froze on the spot.
Nie Xin was so angry her liver trembled. So, while he was making his heartfelt confession, she was out catching frogs to play with?!
The two locked eyes.
His eyes were filled with rage, while hers were filled with terror.
After a while, his anger slowly melted into pity, and her frightened eyes gradually became lively again.
The little frog that had just been caught in the earthquake miraculous escaped and, seizing the opportune moment, let out a cry:
"Croak—"
Nie Xin was stunned for a moment, then laughed in exasperation.
"Uncle," Sang Qing quickly apologized, "I'm so sorry, I didn't know you were afraid of frogs..."
"Who's scared!" Nie Xin wouldn't admit it. If word got out, how could he show off his prowess?
