He Jin gave him a speechless look.
Nie Xin was still grinning foolishly, casually touching the ring on his hand. It took him a while to realize that He Jin seemed to have spoken to him just now.
"Hey, what did you say?"
"It's nothing," He Jin forced a smile. "I was just thinking about whether we should abolish the hereditary system of nobility in the future."
Nie Xin was very puzzled, "Why?"
"If nothing unexpected happens, you will inherit General Nie's title in the future."
"Yes." Nie Xin nodded. "So what?"
“I just think,” He Jin said with a wicked grin, “that the system of hereditary peerage is a bit unreasonable. You can’t just pass the peerage on to an idiot.”
Nie Xin suddenly glared at him and chased after him, ready to hit him.
"Hello!"
When Nie Xin threw a punch, He Jin dodged it and said with a smile, "I went to all the trouble to arrange a show for you... and you treat me like this!"
What program?
He Jin clapped his hands, and someone brought over a tray with a pair of diamond rings that sparkled brilliantly in the sunlight.
“Although I shouldn’t be the one giving you rings, I really can’t think of anything else to give you,” He Jin said with a smile. “These rings were left to me by my uncle. He thought I would wear them with my future queen, but… I will never have a queen.”
"Ah Jin, this..."
"Don't mention it." He Jin patted his shoulder. "My uncle said that the throne originally belonged to Aunt Lin Yue. If Aunt hadn't had that accident back then, it should belong to Sang Qing now."
"So these rings are a gift for you and Sang Qing, which can be considered a return to their rightful owners!"
Nie Xin was deeply moved. Touching the slightly tarnished silver ring on her hand, she didn't know what to say.
"When you propose later, you'd better make it a big affair!" He Jin said with a mischievous smile. "You must let the entire royal family know that your General's Mansion will not mistreat our young prince!"
...
Jiang Can and Huo Zhixing also attended the banquet with Xiao Junyu.
A toddler, just over a year old, was captivated by the garden scenery, chasing butterflies and playing. He accidentally bumped into a violinist. The pretty violinist didn't scold him; instead, she lifted her skirt, bowed, and smiled at him.
Little Junyu, still a bit dazed, returned the greeting in a very gentlemanly manner after regaining his footing, which made everyone around him burst into laughter.
Jiang Can stepped forward, picked him up, and proudly kissed him twice.
Huo Zhixing, who was standing to the side, immediately felt that the dessert in his mouth was no longer sweet.
“Wife,” he leaned closer, “don’t forget I’m here for you.”
His face was serious and earnest, and his voice was deep and powerful, not at all like someone flirting.
Jiang Can was stunned and stared at him blankly.
Huo Zhixing pointed to his face.
Jiang Can was both amused and exasperated, and warned in a low voice, "There are so many people here, you better behave!"
"No way!" Third Master Huo's eyes widened. "Why should my son have it and I don't? I'm a first-time father too, why should I have to give in to him?"
"You..." This person is simply being unreasonable!
Little Junyu had his chubby fingers in his mouth, staring blankly at his dad.
"Daddy—"
Huo Zhixing was stunned for a moment. Although he still pretended to be serious, he couldn't hold back his smile.
Who could resist that sweet, childlike call?
Xiao Junyu opened his arms, and Huo Zhixing smiled and opened his arms to catch him.
Jiang Can thought the next second would be a beautiful scene of father and son embracing, but who knew...
The son slapped Huo Sanye's face repeatedly with both hands, like striking a gong!
Huo Zhixing, who had just been showing deep affection for his son, was stunned into silence.
The chubby little hands were quite lethal; after "banging the gong," he covered his face and giggled.
"Huo Junyu!"
Huo Zhixing grabbed his chubby hand and pretended to slap it twice. "You brat, you dare to hit your dad? See how I deal with you!"
"Mommy—"
The child, feeling wronged, turned around and hugged Jiang Can's neck.
But Jiang Can didn't act protectively as usual. Instead, she gently placed Xiao Junyu on the ground, letting him cry and fuss without holding him. Then she and Huo Zhixing squatted down in front of him.
Mom stopped smiling and looked at him seriously, saying, "Which little hand hit Daddy just now? Hold it out!"
Huo Junyu first opened his eyes wide, then his small face, which looked like a white steamed bun, scrunched up as if he was about to cry, but was stopped by Jiang Can's stern glare.
"It's wrong for a child to hit people! He's your father, how dare you hit him?"
"Waaah..."
"Show me which hand hit you!"
Little Huo Junyu realized the situation was dire; with no one to back him up, he understood that he might have really made a mistake this time. So he timidly stretched out his two chubby little hands, palms facing up.
Jiang Can slapped Huo Junyu across the face without hesitation, and Huo Junyu was about to cry when she gently stopped him.
"Sweetie, you're a year and a half old now, and there are some things Mommy needs to tell you. Hitting someone's face is very impolite, and you're not allowed to do it again, understand?"
“You’re a little man,” Jiang Can patted his head, “so Mom believes you’ll never do something so rude again, right?”
Although Huo Junyu's eyes were red, he understood the word "man" and forced back his tears.
Still struggling to speak properly, he looked timidly at Huo Zhixing and stammered, "Daddy... I'm sorry."
Huo Zhixing's heart had already melted, not only because of his son's apology, but also because Jiang Can had stood by his side for the first time ever.
He picked up Huo Junyu, kissed him on the cheek to show that he accepted the apology, and then looked tenderly at Jiang Can.
