Chapter 799 Holding Hands (22)

Lu Ran had a very long dream. In the dream, she returned to her childhood and saw the sunset. Her mother was waiting for her to come home at the street corner. Although they lived a poor life, they were very happy.

Gradually, she regained consciousness, but still refused to open her eyes. She wanted to return to that dream, to that carefree time.

A tear dampened her eyelashes and rolled down her cheek.

...

Cheng Suyue died, and Lu Ran became an orphan.

After handling all the funeral arrangements, Lu Lishan and Lin Yuqing took her home and cared for her like their own daughter.

Jiang Can and Huo Zhixing often came to check on her, and even Huo Junyang, whose injuries had not yet fully healed, would often hobble over to her side on crutches.

His cheerful nature was like the sun, bringing light and warmth to her gloomy and cold life.

However, the more they acted this way, the sadder Lu Ran felt.

If she hadn't been so indecisive, if she had made up her mind from the beginning to send her mother to a nursing home... perhaps none of these things would have happened.

That evening, Pei Nian noticed that Lu Ran hadn't eaten much, so after hesitating for a moment, she decided to cook some porridge and bring it to her.

However, just as he reached the stairwell, Huo Jingnan suddenly appeared from around the corner!

If Pei Nian hadn't remained calm, that bowl of porridge might have been dumped on Huo Jingnan's head.

The two stared at each other for a while, then Pei Nian asked, "You... what are you doing here?"

Huo Jingnan chuckled twice but didn't say anything.

"Are you living at the Lu family's house?" Pei Nian asked, puzzled. "How come I see you all the time!"

"You...you really don't want to see me?"

"No, I just find it strange," Pei Nian sighed softly, "You don't go home, you're always running around here!"

Huo Jingnan straightened up. "What's the point of me running around here all the time... don't you know?"

Pei Nian frowned, then couldn't help but chuckle to herself.

Ever since returning from that village, Huo Jingnan has become a powder keg ready to explode at the slightest provocation, and he always speaks with resentment in his voice.

Huo Jingnan's gaze fell on the bowl of porridge in her hand.

"This is……"

"Oh, Miss Lu Ran hasn't eaten. I'll bring it up to her."

"I haven't eaten either!"

Pei Nian: "?"

Before she could react, Huo Jingnan stomped down at the table, arms crossed, and said defiantly:

"Pei Nian, you handle this!"

Pei Nian was even more confused.

She glanced at him, then at the kitchen, and whispered, "There's still some left in the pot, go get it yourself!"

"you……"

Huo Jingnan was panting heavily, but Pei Nian ignored him and went upstairs with the food.

Huo Jingnan sat in the Lu family's restaurant until late at night.

The Lu family's butlers and servants came and went, finding him amusing, but none of them dared to laugh out loud. They simply went about their business, ignoring his existence.

Bored and sleepy, Huo Jingnan slumped onto the table and drifted off to sleep. He dreamt that Pei Nian had become a virtuous wife and mother, washing his clothes and cooking for him. The two of them lived a blissful life in that small village, a life that no one could envy but a loving couple...

Then, Pei Nian's face blurred, and Huo Junyu appeared before her eyes. She asked him, "When exactly are you going to shoot him?"

Huo Jingnan paused for a moment, then explained, "I made her a sniper rifle, I gave it to her..."

Huo Junyu laughed heartily, and his laughter faded into the distance.

Huo Jingnan, resting his head on his arm, muttered, "Shoot her... what does that mean? Junyu, I'm too weak right now, I need to eat first..."

Here, eat!

Suddenly a voice came from the mist.

Huo Jingnan frowned, and then he smelled a delicious aroma!

He suddenly opened his eyes and realized he wasn't dreaming; there really was a bowl of wontons!

"this……"

He was stunned. One by one, the delicate little wontons were served in a white porcelain bowl, and the little hand holding the bowl seemed to be a perfect match for the translucent white of the bone china.

Looking closer, Pei Nian's beautiful eyes were staring at him.

Huo Jingnan snapped out of his daze, sat up straight, and solemnly accepted the bowl of wontons with both hands.

"You, you did this?" he asked.

Pei Nian chuckled, "You're really something, sleeping in someone else's restaurant."

Huo Jingnan smiled, picked up his spoon, and began to eat heartily. The small wontons with fresh pork filling were delicious and not greasy. The soup contained egg pancake wrappers and seaweed, and was sprinkled with chopped green onions and dried shrimp. He ate them one after another, thoroughly enjoying them.

Pei Nian looked at him quietly, a strange feeling suddenly rising in her heart.

"Looks like you're really hungry..."

"Um?"

"I heard you talking in your sleep just now." She pursed her lips. "You said you had no energy and needed to eat more... Hey, why do you have no energy?"

Huo Jingnan stopped, thought about it carefully, and his face quietly turned red.

He chatted casually with Pei Nian: "Are Uncle Ashan and Aunt Yuqing asleep? I haven't seen them since I arrived."

"The husband and wife don't usually eat dinner; they only have some soup or stew in the evening, so they don't leave their room."

Huo Jingnan ate wontons while grinning foolishly, and even drank all the soup in the end.

"My cooking skills aren't great," Pei Nian said softly, "but it'll be enough to fill my stomach, so please bear with me."

"No, no, it's delicious!"

Pei Nian glanced at him and said, "You're really good at comforting people."

“Not at all!” Huo Jingnan straightened his back and raised his voice, “I mean it from the bottom of my heart!”

Pei Nian couldn't help but laugh. When their eyes met, Pei Nian's face suddenly flushed.

The air seemed to freeze, and time itself stood still.

Everything stopped at this moment.

Pei Nian could only hear her own heart pounding, like the sound of flowers blooming suddenly.

"Pei Nian..."

Huo Jingnan reached out his hand, but just as he was about to grasp her hand, Pei Nian immediately dodged away.

Both of them were a little embarrassed; one kept his head down, while the other's eyes darted around.

Time has become unbearable again.

Huo Jingnan wondered if he should be the first to break the ice. But then he thought, hadn't he made it obvious enough already?

He composed himself, chuckled softly, and said in a low voice, "Pei Nian, I have a question for you."

"What?"

"You're so good to the Lu family, is it really because you like Xiaoyouzi?"
