Chapter 831 Holding Hands (54)

"Junyu, what's wrong?"

Huo Junyu snapped out of his daze and smiled slightly.

I don't know if I'm overthinking it, but some things always seem strange once they're connected in my mind.

"Um...it's nothing," Huo Junyu replied casually. "I'm just a little hungry. Don't you have anything to eat?"

Huo Jingnan was also hungry, and while scrolling through his phone, he casually replied, "Let's order takeout."

Huo Junyu frowned. "I never eat takeout."

"Young Master, do you mean you want me to make it for you?"

"Don't you know how to cook?"

Huo Jingnan glared at him, "Even if I could cook it, I wouldn't cook it for you!"

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Pei Nian walked in with a smile, carrying a thermos. When she saw Huo Junyu there, she nodded somewhat reservedly.

“Pei Nian,” Huo Junyu laughed, “you and Bald Huo are on the same wavelength, you knew he was hungry, so you came to bring us food?”

"Um."

Pei Nian placed the lunchbox on the table, and the two ravenous men quickly gathered around it, but when they saw what was inside…

It's a bit disgusting.

This should have been a pot of soup before it was poured into this insulated container.

It's still a pot of chicken soup.

But now all they could see were scattered bits of meat and chicken bones floating on top, along with a few vegetable leaves dotting the surface with oil.

"Niannian..." Huo Jingnan smiled wryly, "This isn't another failed experiment of yours, is it?"

Pei Nian glanced at him and said he was right.

This time, she didn't get the heat and time right again, and a perfectly good chicken ended up being harder than a rock. Then, for some reason, she put the chicken in the pressure cooker...

This is really bad!

The chicken is falling apart!

And that's how it turned out the way it is now.

Pei Nian couldn't bear to waste it, so she gave it to Huo Jingnan.

Huo Jingnan knew that she hadn't touched anything; he always ate almost all of the "failed dishes" before she ate what was left...

Thinking of this, he affectionately patted her little head and smiled gently.

"Actually, I've had my successes too!" Pei Nian seemed to be explaining to Huo Junyu, "Although not many, but... they still taste pretty good! Mianmian is in her early pregnancy, and I've done a lot of research. Pregnant women at this stage often have severe morning sickness and can't eat much, so I wanted to make her a variety of soups to help her..."

"Thank you, Pei Nian." Huo Junyu smiled sincerely. "You've gone to a lot of trouble."

Pei Nian shook her head somewhat embarrassed.

Huo Jingnan picked up a few bowls and, while ladling soup, joked, "Those who know, know that it's because Xiaoyouzi is pregnant; those who don't might think it's you who's pregnant!"

Pei Nian nudged him, and the two looked at each other and smiled.

Huo Junyu looked at the two of them, and the question mark that had been lingering in his mind suddenly became active again.

"Pei Nian," he asked casually, "Mianmian also gave you a small pistol, didn't she?"

Pei Nian's hand holding the spoon suddenly froze, and she looked up at him.

“I didn’t mean anything by it.” Huo Junyu chuckled. “Jingnan made you a small pistol, and the character ‘Pei’ was written on the handle. I just saw it and it suddenly reminded me of Mianmian’s pistol. There seems to be a character on the handle in the same place.”

Pei Nian pursed her lips, her surface remaining calm and composed, but her heart was already in turmoil.

"By the way, Pei Nian," Huo Junyu asked again, "after all this time, I still don't know where you're from?"

"Hey, what's up?" Huo Jingnan interrupted. "Are you checking my household registration?"

"Why would I check your household registration!" A deep and complex light flashed in Huo Junyu's eyes as he said with a half-smile, "I'm just asking for you, aren't I? If you really marry Pei Nian in the future, even if I don't ask, your fourth uncle will!"

Huo Jingnan paused, put down his chopsticks, and frowned slightly.

Pei Nian's expression also changed slightly.

She forced herself to remain calm, silently drank some soup, and then put the bowls and chopsticks into the sink.

Huo Junyu took the opportunity to leave, leaving only her and Huo Jingnan in the room.

She tidied the table and was about to wash the dishes when suddenly a pair of large hands blocked her way from the side.

"The water's cold, I'll wash it."

Pei Nian was taken aback, but then she saw Huo Jingnan already efficiently turning on the tap to wash the pots and pans.

She listened to the rushing water and watched him quietly. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing a section of his strong forearm. The pool was a bit low, so he had to hunch slightly, but his back was still broad and thick, like a safe fortress, so that her heart would never feel lost again.

But what about her? Does her background match his dazzling appearance?

Huo Junyu may have spoken without thinking, but she listened attentively. If they were to be together in the future, she would definitely have to meet Huo Jingnan's parents.

Will Huo Zhishu and his wife be as easy to get along with and free from social class distinctions as Jiang Can and Huo Zhixing?

She had long planned to keep her secret about her background to herself. What would she do if they pressed her for an explanation?

Pei Nian's heart was in turmoil.

Before meeting Huo Jingnan, she had never considered these things, nor would she have cared.

But after meeting Huo Jingnan, she longed for a future with him...

"Niannian, what's wrong?"

"Huh?" Pei Nian suddenly snapped back to reality.

You don't look well. Are you feeling unwell?

Pei Nian shook her head vigorously.

"Um... I'll wash them!" she tried to hide her panic. "It's not cold, it's no problem for me to wash a few dishes!"

"That won't do either." Huo Jingnan chuckled at her. "From now on, I'll handle all these things! I'm tough, I'm not afraid!"

Pei Nian smiled at him.

“I know,” Huo Jingnan said in a low voice, “You took Junyu’s words to heart, didn’t you?”

He dried his hands and gently embraced her.

"Don't listen to him! Marriage is a matter between the two of us. As long as you're willing to marry me, that's all that matters."

Pei Nian's heart pounded. After hesitating for a moment, she reached out her small hand and wrapped it around his waist.

She wanted to hold him tightly, as if grasping a rare ray of light in her life.

A person as hard-hearted as her wouldn't be easily moved, but once she's set her mind on someone, she'll be determined to stay with them for life.

Perhaps Huo Jingnan didn't know that Pei Nian loved him even more than he imagined.

"Jingnan, aren't you curious?" she asked softly.

Huo Jingnan was taken aback. "What?"

"You never asked me where I was from, what my family members were, or what kind of environment I grew up in... Now that I think about it, you really knew nothing about me."

"Jingnan, aren't you worried... that I'm a liar?"

Huo Jingnan laughed, cupped her face in his hands, and looked deeply into her eyes.

With eyes so clear and innocent, even if someone were to lie to him, he would willingly be deceived.

Huo Jingnan took a deep breath and solemnly replied with four words: "I'm not worried."

“I’m not worried, nor am I curious,” he said in a deep voice. “What I want is you as a person, not your background or your upbringing. If you want to tell me these things, I’ll listen attentively; if you don’t want to, I won’t ask.”

“Niannian,” he smiled indulgently, “I’m not interested in your past, I only want your present and future.”
