Chapter 958 Side Story: Evening in the City (21)

After being followed once again, Song Wan dialed Bai Ruogu's voice call.

There was no response from the other end.

Her heart was pounding in her throat, and she quickened her pace. She was taking the main road today, unlike the secluded alley, but the person behind her still followed brazenly. She glanced around; police cars usually patrolled these kinds of roads, so she prepared herself to run towards one for help as soon as she saw it.

However, before she even saw the police car, she discovered that there was one more person following her!

Although Song Wan was also scared, she wasn't as panicked as last time. She couldn't get through to Bai Ruogu on the phone, so she didn't try again; after all, he was far away and couldn't help her much.

She was about to run into her apartment complex when two men caught up with her and blocked her way. She screamed in terror, seeing their lewd smiles and the evil glint in their eyes.

"Song Wan?" one of the men sneered. "Your brother-in-law can't pay back the money, so we'll have to ask you to come with us!"

As they spoke, they stepped forward and grabbed her.

Song Wan struggled desperately, trying to turn around and call for the community security guard, but another man forcefully covered her mouth and nose. She felt dizzy and nauseous, and instinctively held her breath.

Just then, she heard the man cry out in pain.

The power within her vanished, and she stumbled as she was pushed away.

Suddenly, a tall figure shielded her.

She paused for a moment, then looked up and saw Lin Zhaojiang's reassuring eyes.

"Don't be afraid." He raised his arm to shield her behind him. "I'm here."

At that moment, Song Wan suddenly felt an immense sense of security.

She didn't know Lin Zhaojiang, but she unconditionally believed that he would do everything in his power to protect her.

"Heh, where did this come from? A hero rescuing a damsel in distress?"

"You didn't even bother to find out, do you think you can mess with Master Qiao from the underworld?"

The two men were spewing vulgarities, but Lin Zhaojiang remained calm and composed, his eyes coldly fixed on them, his entire being radiating a chilling aura like a beast stalking in the dark.

They rushed at him, but Lin Zhaojiang pushed Song Wan aside and fought them both alone. The two were no match for him and were quickly kicked to the ground. At that moment, one of them pulled out a dagger. Song Wan saw a cold glint in the night, followed by Lin Zhaojiang letting out a low cry and clutching his forearm.

Before the two could make any further moves, several of Lin Zhaojiang's men rushed over. Outnumbered, the two were quickly subdued by the men.

"Mr. Lin, what should we do?"

"Contact Officer Zou and take him to the police station first!"

“Okay.” One of his subordinates noticed his injuries. “Mr. Lin, you…”

"It's alright!"

Lin Zhaojiang turned to look at Song Wan. Her face was deathly pale, and she stood motionless as if she had lost her soul.

He gestured for his men to leave first, then put his injured arm behind his back and said to Song Wan with a light laugh, "It's alright now, don't be afraid."

Song Wan's tears welled up instantly.

"Teacher Song, it's really alright now..."

"Are you injured?" Song Wan wanted to see his hands. "I just saw them holding knives!"

"Oh, it's okay..."

"I'll take you to the hospital!"

Lin Zhaojiang wouldn't let her move, afraid her wound would frighten her. Just then, Song Xi walked to the entrance of the residential area with a flashlight. Hearing what had just happened, she broke out in a cold sweat.

"Mr. Lin, you're still bleeding!" Song Xi exclaimed in alarm. "We'd better get to the hospital right away!"

"It's just a minor injury, it's really nothing." Lin Zhaojiang looked at Song Wan with gentle eyes and said softly, "It's good that you're alright."

"Then...then why don't we invite Mr. Lin to our home first?" Song Xi asked tentatively. "In any case, we need to bandage the wound and stop the bleeding first!"

Song Wan nodded with tears in her eyes.

She held onto Lin Zhaojiang, afraid that he might slip up again. Her careful demeanor warmed his heart.

He wanted to hold her close and hug her tightly.

But they dared not do anything excessive.

He quietly lowered his head, smelled the fragrance of her hair, and a slight smile appeared on his lips, which he couldn't bring himself to smile back.

Song Wan's home wasn't big, but it was decorated very warmly. There were two bedrooms, one for her and one for her sister.

Lin Zhaojiang lay down in Song Wan's bedroom as if it were his right.

Song Wan helped him lie down on the bed, then brought out the first-aid kit from home, disinfected the wound briefly, and wrapped it with thick gauze.

“President Lin, I think you’d better go to the hospital to get checked out,” Song Wan said seriously. “The things I have here aren’t professional, and I’m afraid it might delay your treatment.”

"Don't talk nonsense," Lin Zhaojiang said with a smile. "It's just a small cut, it's not that serious. You bandaged it very well."

"Are you hungry?" Song Wan looked into his eyes. "I'll get you something to eat. You're injured now, so you must take good care of yourself!"

"I……"

Lin Zhaojiang wanted to say that he had eaten dinner before he arrived, but before he could finish speaking, Song Wan had already run out like a gust of wind.

He glanced at the doorway, then turned his head and saw the strawberry bear on the bedside table, and smiled happily.

He picked up the teddy bear and flicked its nose.

"I didn't expect we'd meet again?"

Lin Zhaojiang smiled like a child.

A moment later, Song Wan brought in the food and was slightly taken aback when she saw the scene before her.

Lin Zhaojiang immediately stopped laughing and put the strawberry bear aside.

Song Wan burst out laughing; it was the first time she had ever seen him like this.

"There's nothing else at home, so I just cooked some vegetable noodles. Please make do with this."

Do you have hot sauce?

Song Wan frowned. "You have a wound, you can't eat spicy food!"

Lin Zhaojiang smiled.

She still loves to control him, just like before, especially what he eats.

In the past, when he had many social engagements, she would cook yam soup and millet porridge for him, saying that these were good for his stomach, and she would also advise him not to drink too much alcohol.

He only realized after losing her that others only saw his success, but she was the only one who unconditionally accepted his misery.
