Song Wan shook her head blankly, forcing a smile.
"Ms. Song, you've been looking quite tired lately. I think... how about we give you a day off?" The principal was very considerate of her. "You should rest for a few days first. If this parent comes again, I'll deal with her!"
"Director, this..."
"It's alright!" the principal smiled. "You were supposed to take a day off anyway. Here's what we'll do: hand over your class duties to Teacher Li, then go back and rest for a few days to recharge. Then we'll deal with this difficult parent together!"
Song Wan nodded gratefully and quickly finished handing over her work.
But she couldn't get any rest at home. The name Sophia on the form, every stroke of it, seemed to be mocking and provoking her. And every time she closed her eyes, she could see that woman with her arms crossed.
She hesitated for a long time while holding the phone, but finally dialed Bai Ruogu's number.
They agreed to meet in the evening.
When the appointed time arrived, Song Wan heard a noise from across the hall. She hurriedly got up to open the door and happened to see Bai Ruogu returning.
"Song...Song Wan." Bai Ruogu's expression was somewhat unnatural. "I was just about to come back to change my clothes and then go find you..."
Song Wan stared at him for a long time.
He still had a refined and elegant appearance, exuding an air of nobility; he was the kind of guy who would make many girls secretly fall in love with him.
But the weariness in his eyes was impossible to hide.
He seemed to be deliberately avoiding Song Wan.
“Ruogu,” Song Wan looked at him quietly, “we haven’t been in touch for many days, don’t you have anything to say to me?”
"Um..." Bai Ruogu stammered, scratched his head, and ultimately said nothing.
Song Wan took a deep breath. "I'm not going to beat around the bush with you. There's something I want to ask you."
"Okay, go ahead."
"Who is Sophia...?"
Bai Ruogu's eyes darkened, and he seemed a little flustered, but he quickly calmed down.
He clenched his fists, put his hands in his pants pockets and took them out again, repeating this several times, as if his hands had nowhere to go.
Song Wan noticed all of these subtle actions.
Her heart sank little by little.
“Song Wan,” Bai Ruogu paused for a moment, then looked up and smiled at her, “Where…where did you hear that name?”
Song Wan said frankly, "I saw your phone. Someone called you that day, and you left your phone at my house, so I saw this name."
“Oh…it’s a colleague.” Bai Ruogu said casually, “She’s a colleague of mine in the US. I’m back now, and there are still a lot of things to take care of there, so her call is probably about work.”
"Really?" Song Wan looked at him, her disappointment evident in her eyes.
He probably doesn't realize that he looks like a clown.
His explanations were merely attempts to cover up the truth, and in her eyes, they had become a joke.
"Ruogu," Song Wan tried one last time, "Am I still your fiancée?"
"What kind of talk is that! My parents like you very much, and they acknowledge that you are the future daughter-in-law of the Bai family."
"I'm asking you," Song Wan stared intently at him. "In your heart, am I your fiancée? Are you marrying me willingly?"
Bai Ruogu felt a little guilty and after a long pause asked hesitantly, "Song Wan... what's wrong with you today?"
Song Wan smiled and asked him, "What do you think is the most important thing between husband and wife?"
Bai Ruogu couldn't say it.
“It’s about trust.” Song Wan looked into his eyes. “Ruogu, if there’s no trust between two people, then the marriage has no meaning. Don’t you agree?”
Bai Ruogu rolled his eyes and gave a dry laugh.
"Have you been working too hard lately? It's too late today, you should get some rest, we can talk another day!"
After saying that, Bai Ruogu turned and left.
Song Wan watched his retreating figure, thinking about his evasive words, leaned her head against the wall, and a bitter smile appeared on her lips.
She had a premonition that their relationship had come to an end.
That night, Song Wan tossed and turned in bed for a long time, unable to fall asleep. Her mind was a jumble of thoughts. She turned over and saw the strawberry bear on the bedside table. She picked it up and hugged it to her chest.
Before long, he drifted off to sleep.
In a daze, Song Wan saw a white light before her eyes. When the light faded, she found herself in a beautiful little villa. The yard was filled with clusters of vibrant orchids.
With a touch of curiosity, she pushed open the door. Inside, the room was furnished with classic European furniture, the decor understated yet luxurious. She froze, momentarily at a loss, when she saw someone on the sofa. That person slowly stood up and turned around…
Lin Zhaojiang?!
Song Wan was startled and involuntarily took a few steps back, but Lin Zhaojiang grabbed her.
"Wanwan, you're back."
He chuckled softly, his voice gentle and ethereal. She wanted to ask him what was going on, but suddenly heard the cry of a baby.
Lin Zhaojiang looked upstairs and laughed, "The baby is crying; he's looking for his mother!"
"What?" Song Wan's heart pounded.
She ran upstairs, but the baby's crying stopped. She saw a small cradle in a room, but there was no baby inside, just a pillow!
Song Wan gasped softly, and as she turned around, Lin Zhaojiang stood at the door of the room, smiling at her. However, the smile was devoid of warmth, and his eyes were empty and eerily strange.
"What...what exactly is going on?"
“Wanwan,” Lin Zhaojiang looked at her, emphasizing each word, “this is our home, have you forgotten?”
"ah--"
Song Wan woke up with a start, covered in a cold sweat. She gasped for breath and it took her a long time to calm down.
She didn't know why she had this dream, and she couldn't understand why Lin Zhaojiang appeared in it...
It was already broad daylight, and her head was throbbing from that long sleep. She was just about to go to the kitchen to get something to eat when the principal called, her voice urgent: "Ms. Song, I'm so sorry! Please don't take your day off now, come to the kindergarten..."
"What's wrong?"
"The parents of all the kids who had conflicts with James before are here, and James's mother will be here soon. Today, all the parents are going to settle things once and for all, so as the homeroom teacher, you absolutely have to be there!"
"Okay, I'll be right there." Song Wan replied softly, "I'll be right there."
She quickly tidied herself up and went out, only to see Lin Zhaojiang standing at her doorstep.
She was stunned.
She recalled the bizarre dream she had last night and suddenly felt a little embarrassed, giving an awkward smile. "Mr. Lin... is there something you need?"
Lin Zhaojiang's expression was serious, with a complex look in his eyes that she couldn't decipher.
Where are you going?
“I went to the kindergarten today, and many parents were there. The principal hopes that the problem can be resolved in one go.”
Lin Zhaojiang's expression changed slightly, and he uttered two words heavily: "Don't go!"
Song Wan was taken aback. "What did you say?"
"Don't go today," Lin Zhaojiang said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "I'll handle whatever comes up!"
