Chapter 8 Conjoined Twins (Xiao Xiu)
Chen Chi led a temporary action team of about ten people and quickly moved towards the location sent by Qin Huai.
The Administration equipped each team member with a positioning system that allowed them to see each other's locations, but even so, when they entered the Mountain Ghost, they were still separated by this terrifying monster.
The mountain ghost can freely change the terrain inside its body. Even though Chen Chi has rich combat experience, he still seems to be struggling in front of the top monster and is covered with wounds by the stone spikes.
It was not until they finally contacted Qin Huai that they successfully met up with other team members who were also being chased under Qin Huai's remote command, and escorted the students who were trapped in the tunnel out.
While Chen Chi was listening to Qin Huai's orders to carry out the mission, he was secretly frightened. Even though there were no monsters chasing him, cold sweat still seeped out of his forehead.
The command was calm and objective, with a 100% accuracy rate.
It is obvious that the terrain inside the mountain ghost's body is constantly changing without any pattern, but it can accurately judge the direction and give the action time accurate to the second without moving.
He spoke very quickly, as if speaking without thinking, but he analyzed the situation very thoroughly.
...It's terrifying. It's not human at all, but an inhuman machine.
Chen Chi had been working at the Administration for many years and thought he was used to everything, but this young newcomer made him feel unreasonably intimidated.
No matter what unexpected situation arose, no matter how complex the situation, it seemed to be within the Inquisitor's grasp. He would not allow anything to get out of his control, whether it was a monster or his subordinates.
The ability to see through everything, an extremely terrifying desire for control, and a natural leader.
When facing top-level monsters, Chen Chi did not trust any of his soldiers, thinking that they might die on the spot at any time, but he was very confident in Qin Huai.
So they put searching and rescuing students first and meeting with the Inquisitor last.
Now they have completed the search and rescue mission and are heading towards Qin Huai along the relatively safe road pointed out by Qin Huai.
"Have you contacted the Inquisitor?" Chen Chi touched a wet rock on the side to make sure it would not attack suddenly.
"Sir, not yet." The soldier looked at the communicator helplessly. "The signal should not have been cut off, but there has been no response from the Inquisitor..."
"...What?" Chen Chi's expression suddenly changed, and he turned to look at him, "Give it to me!"
This would never happen to Qin Huai!
After confirming the soldier's story was true, Chen Chi remained silent for a moment with a dark face. He then said in a low and serious voice, "Turn on the magic detection device, quickly."
The soldier did as he was told. Chen Chi pushed aside the others and moved closer, staring at the screen with a frown.
As expected, the device lit up a red light alarm, and black fog covered the display screen - this was the magic power emitted by the mountain ghost and the Western dragon that they had just confirmed.
"There doesn't seem to be anything unusual... No!" The soldier's voice suddenly rose and said seriously, "Sir, look at this position!"
The soldier pointed to Qin Huai's location. There was indeed a faint black dot there, indicating that this place was emitting a faint magical power.
In fact, it is very weak. If you don't look carefully, it is really hard to notice it from the overwhelming magic power of the mountain ghosts and dragons.
However, the alarm displayed a red-level alert on this weak magic power, and the bright light indicating danger kept flashing as if urging death.
Just by releasing a little bit of magic power, the detector can issue the same level of warning as mountain ghosts and dragons.
...What does this mean?
A real monster.
The soldier and Chen Chi looked at each other, their expressions were still relatively calm, but they both saw bottomless fear in each other's eyes.
"Hurry." Chen Chi looked calm, but he could no longer suppress the trembling in his voice.
“If this is true… the Inquisitor could die at any moment.
"Hurry up and get there!"
Ten minutes later.
There was a deathly silence both inside and outside the cave, and the tense atmosphere was as tangible as a substance, making everyone breathe lightly and their hearts beat faster.
"Is anyone in there?"
Chen Chi felt increasingly uncertain after receiving no response. He bravely shouted again, but still no one answered. Only the echo of the empty stone wall made him shudder.
Chen Chi looked down at the positioning device on his wrist and confirmed once again that the Inquisitor's communication equipment was there.
As for whether the person is there or not, or whether he is still alive...
If it was someone else inside, Chen Chi would have been dead by now.
A monster of this level probably wouldn't even leave a bone for humans.
But if it’s Qinhuai…it’s hard to say.
Chen Chi decided to struggle a bit more. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and waved to the soldiers behind him to force their way in. But a sudden beeping sound made everyone stop in their tracks, and they turned on their communicators in confusion.
This is a special reminder tone that can only be issued by the Inquisitor's first-level emergency order. In the Administration, team members who hear this instruction must check and follow it immediately no matter what they are doing.
So the Inquisitor is still intact and mentally sound, able to issue orders?? Huh??
Then why didn't you respond? Are you pretending to be dead?
Chen Chi couldn't catch his breath. He felt his heart racing like a roller coaster, suddenly being pulled up to the sky and then plunging back down. He clicked on the command, his brow furrowed so tightly that it could kill a mosquito.
[After you come in, don't reveal my identity. Treat me and him as students and follow the normal rescue process.]
[Be gentle. Put away your guns and don't scare anyone.]
Chen Chi understood Qin Huai's instructions very smoothly, but his brain was stuck and couldn't understand the purpose of his decision.
No, what does this mean? They are all in Chinese, so why can’t I understand them when put together?
Don’t scare anyone??
Top level monster?
Chen Chi felt his jaw drop to the ground, and he raised his hand to catch it. The Inquisitor began to protect the monster, and to protect it from being frightened.
Is he crazy or is this world crazy? Otherwise, how could he see such ridiculous words?
Chen Chi's brain completely shut down. He slapped the team members next to him several times and shouted silently, "What's going on? Do you know?"
The soldiers' jaws dropped to the ground, and they looked at each other, their faces looking as ugly as if they had seen a ghost.
"Sir, please stop joking. How can I know if you don't know?"
"Has it been possessed by a demon? Otherwise, this... this? Is this right?"
"Maybe the detector is broken. Those aren't monsters at all. They're trapped students, right?"
"That doesn't make sense! If you're really a student, why would you say something like that to please your wife?"
“That’s right!”
"And that man is the Inquisitor, the Inquisitor!! Don't scare him, how the hell could he say something like that?"
"Brothers, I think something is wrong. I think it's a possession! Let's run quickly..."
The silent yet seemingly loud argument lasted for a minute or two, and was finally interrupted by a weak breath.
"Sir..." A rather frail-looking team member behind Chen Chi raised his hand silently. "I'm in charge of data management. I know what's going on."
Everyone's eyes were on him.
"Commander Qin took on a stealth mission a few days ago. It involved lurking near a top-tier monster to prevent it from attacking humans." The clerk adjusted his glasses and continued, "I guess the one inside is his target, and he can't disturb them, so he said this."
Chen Chi and his team members suddenly understood.
It turns out that the commander wasn't really trying to fool people, but was trying to disguise himself in front of the monster!
As expected, the commander was still the cold-blooded commander. How could he possibly say something like this to defend the monsters? They were completely overthinking it.
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, put their pistols into their pockets as ordered, and walked into the cave with a gentle expression, ready to cooperate with Qin Huai's performance.
Qin Huai and Duan Ke were now facing away from the cave entrance, whispering to each other as if no one was around.
Duan Ke was a little nervous and unconsciously put his hands into his sleeves, using his sleeves to cover the lower half of his face.
"Why haven't they come in yet...it's so strange."
He had thought of several possible lies in his mind, but the people outside still didn't move, and he had no idea what was going on.
"They're from the Monster Management Bureau. They're probably here to arrest me."
Duan Ke finished his serious explanation and sighed helplessly, "But fortunately, this incident has nothing to do with me. Even if they arrest me, they will release me later."
I do know the official rules.
A monster was explaining the management rules to him seriously. Qin Huai inexplicably felt like laughing, but he kept a cold expression and hummed to indicate that he had listened.
"But...if that commander is here too, it's hard to say."
Duan Ke's face paled as he imagined some bloody scene. "I heard he loves to arrest people... woo."
Qin Huai had no expression on his face:?
Which commander?
Qin Huai felt a strange feeling as if his spine was poked. Just as he was about to ask who this person was, Duan Ke came closer and pulled his sleeve.
Qin Huai's breathing paused briefly when he smelled the refreshing and pleasant orange scent from Duan Ke's body. The inexplicable feeling disappeared, and he didn't ask any more questions.
Duan Ke leaned close to Qin Huai's ear and whispered mysteriously, "You have to believe me, I'm a good cat and I won't eat my classmates. And I'm not like a mountain ghost. I don't like to eat people."
"If that unreasonable officer asks about it, you have to testify for me."
Qin Huai folded his hands, smiling: "Yeah."
You were clearly hugging and chewing him last night, you little liar.
However, Qin Huai did not dislike Duan Ke's attempt to gain his trust, and he deliberately saw through it without saying anything. Duan Ke was completely unaware of his inner thoughts, and simply assumed that his host believed him, and was naive and gullible.
There were footsteps coming very close behind him. Duan Ke knew that it was the search team coming in. He pulled Qin Huai's sleeve and turned around with Qin Huai.
The moment he saw the expressions of the search team members, Duan Ke was so scared that he subconsciously took a small step back.
...Why, why do these people have such strange expressions?
It was like seeing a ghost. If you didn't know, you would think he was performing a shaman dance in the street!
Duan Ke looked back at his butt in confusion. The tail was indeed retracted. He turned his head to look at Qin Huai again. Qin Huai was fine too. His face was still handsome and his figure was still perfect. No matter how you looked at him, he was still a handsome man, not a terrifying creature.
Duan Ke was still staring at Chen Chi's bitter face, which looked like it had eaten a jackfruit. He nudged Qin Huai's with his elbow and asked softly, "What happened to them? They look... not so good."
"I don't know." Qin Huai didn't look at the other side, but lowered his eyes to look at Duan Ke, "It's very strange, I don't know what he's in a daze."
Seeing the two of them almost touching each other's faces, everyone said: "......?"
This scene was much more terrifying than seeing a top-level monster. Everyone was frozen in place like a wooden board, as if they would fall straight to the ground if the wind blew, completely forgetting the Inquisitor's advice of "don't scare anyone".
Seeing their expressions, Duan Ke's originally calm heart began to panic. She pursed her slightly red lips and wanted to hide behind Qin Huai.
Qin Huai had been staring at him, and of course he saw through Duan Ke's little tricks clearly. He couldn't help but tut a little, reminding these useless people to hurry up and do their work.
Chen Chi was the first to react. Trying his best to maintain a calm expression, he took a few steps forward and said, "Are you the trapped students? We're the Monster Management Bureau's action team, responsible for resolving this sudden attack. Come with us." He showed his ID.
After hearing this, Duan Ke's eyes lit up in surprise.
Didn't these people realize he was a monster? Was I just overthinking it?
How could he not go down the stairs? He quickly followed up with the words: "Yeah, that's right, this guy and I are both students of University A."
Duan Ke grabbed Qin Huai's wrist and stepped forward quickly. "Please take us upstairs, thank you!"
Everyone: ...
There seemed to be too many things to complain about, and for a moment I didn't know whether to complain about the friendliness of the top monsters or the abnormality of the commander first.
Chen Chi was exhausted by this capriciousness. His eyes were dull as he said, "Then, classmate, please go up with the team member behind me. The other one needs to stay behind. We have something to confirm with him."
Duan Ke was of course not happy about it, and he frowned and refused: "Then I want to stay with him, we are together."
Everyone: “.”
You two really are conjoined twins. One is an Inquisitor and the other is a top-level monster. How come you can't be separated?
It's been several minutes since you two came in. Have you two had a single second without physical contact?
Chen Chi felt dizzy and unsure about Qin Huai's decision. He didn't dare to refuse nor did he dare not to refuse. He gritted his teeth and looked at his boss as if asking for help.
But he found that Qin Huai never paid any attention to his subordinates, and was looking at Duan Ke the whole time.
Qin Huai looked at Duan Ke's unhappy little bitter face, and a subtle joy arose in his heart that he was not even aware of.
He completely ignored the mental health of his subordinates who were watching him. He reached out and touched the back of Duan Ke's head soothingly twice, and whispered coaxingly:
"Be good, go up first."
