People who have been caught in the rain are always willing to hold an umbrella for others.
Jiang Sheng squatted down and, instead of taking away the two cotton quilts, tucked them in.
She couldn't help but wonder if these children would starve to death if they stayed with Pang Dashan.
Zheng Ruqian walked over at some point, and when he saw the children, his pupils contracted for a moment. "Jiang Sheng, you're not going to take these people home again, are you?"
If picking up Xu Mo was out of kindness, picking up Fang Heng was to curry favor, then picking up Wen Zhiyun was to repay a debt of gratitude.
Zheng Ruqian was unwilling to accept another one from the bottom of his heart.
Even the dilapidated temple couldn't hold a sixth child.
“I didn’t mean that.” Jiang Sheng stood up, her gaze sweeping over the several beggars, but she paused when she saw the last one.
The other beggars were all dark-skinned and disheveled, but this beggar had fair skin, a beautiful face, and even his eyelashes were half a head longer than the others.
Because of his fair complexion, Jiang Sheng could clearly see the flush on his face and his chapped lips.
She couldn't resist reaching out to touch the beggar's forehead, and the heat made her shudder.
This beggar has a fever; if he isn't treated, things could get complicated.
Jiang Sheng couldn't sit still any longer and kept calling out to her fourth brother.
Wen Zhiyun thought his younger sister had been hurt, so he staggered in, clutching the silver needles.
When he saw the little beggar's flushed face, he frowned, checked his pulse, and said, "High fever. If the fever doesn't break, he'll be gone overnight."
But they didn't bring a first-aid kit, and there was no clinic in town.
Jiang Sheng gritted her teeth and made a decision in her heart, "Second brother, lend a hand."
She struggled to lift the little beggar child.
Although Zheng Ruqian was unwilling, he still reached out his hands, and the two of them struggled to drag the little beggar onto the donkey cart.
Xu Mo and Fang Heng were both astonished. They had gone to fetch a cotton quilt, but instead of bringing back the quilt, they had brought back a little beggar.
Jiang Sheng didn't have time to explain, she just shouted at Pang Dashan, "The quilt is yours, the child is mine."
He then instructed Fang Heng to take a donkey cart to the dilapidated temple.
After a bumpy ride, we finally arrived at our destination.
Fang Heng carried the beggar back and placed him next to Xu Mo on the only remaining cotton quilt.
Wen Zhiyun went to prepare the medicine, and Jiang Sheng took a new cotton coat and covered him with it to keep warm while constantly feeding him water.
The little beggar opened his mouth several times, but couldn't utter a single word.
Fortunately, after being given two bowls of herbal medicine, his body temperature gradually decreased and was no longer burning hot.
Night fell.
Exhausted from a long day, the brother fell asleep wearing his new cotton-padded coat.
Jiang Sheng also wanted to sleep, but Zheng Ruqian solemnly pulled her outside the door.
The brother and sister whispered to each other, "We can't keep another child. Let's send him away once his fever breaks."
"Where to send it?" Jiang Sheng asked. "Back to Pangda Mountain?"
Zheng Ruqian shut his mouth.
Although Pang Dashan founded the "Beggars' Sect," he did not treat his members well; he only placed himself as the "leader."
Their status meant they demanded priority access to food and clothing.
So much so that even after four or five years of the Beggars' Sect's founding, he only had two lackeys.
Sending the little beggar back might result in him being bullied by Pang Dashan and forced to run away, or he might be bullied to death.
Just like that... nine-year-old boy who slowly collapsed in the snow.
Back in the dilapidated temple, the new coat was warm enough, but Jiang Sheng still couldn't sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the eyes of the nine-year-old boy before he died, and she could only keep her eyes open like a sheep.
When she counted to the two hundredth one, Jiang Sheng finally fell into a deep sleep.
That's why she didn't see the little beggar suddenly open his eyes, revealing his bright black pupils.
the next day.
The little beggar's eyes were still closed when Jiang Sheng put on her cotton-padded coat and skipped off to cook vegetable porridge.
Her brothers were already used to her cooking skills, so they accepted the food expressionlessly and finished it.
There's nothing we can do about it if we're not used to it. Wen Zhiyun doesn't know how to light a fire, and Fang Heng and Zheng Ruqian don't know how to cook food properly. Their dishes are even worse than Jiang Sheng's mushy porridge.
Xu Mo had some ideas, but since he couldn't move, he could only swallow the vegetable paste and tease Jiang Sheng, "Weren't these cotton-padded coats meant to be sold? Why are we wearing them ourselves first?"
Jiang Sheng put her hands on her hips and said, "Let's wear these first, and sell the rest."
Where to sell it is a problem.
Jiang Sheng originally wanted to sell them in town, but her brothers were exhausted from the long journey yesterday, so she decided to take two cotton coats and go to the village entrance instead.
"Selling cotton-padded coats! Selling cotton-padded coats! Cheap sale! They cost twenty coins in town, but I only charge fifteen here."
The seven-year-old girl shouted her wares at the top of her lungs, which soon attracted several middle-aged women to gather around.
"Jiang Sheng, where did you pick up this cotton-padded coat?" someone teased.
Jiang Sheng hurriedly explained, "Aunt Liu, don't talk nonsense. This is a cotton-padded coat that I bought from the county. It's clean and still smells."
New clothes have a unique charm that can't be faked.
Aunt Liu rummaged through her clothes, feeling embarrassed. "Is this really fifteen coins? It clearly sells for twenty coins in town. Why are you offering it for five coins cheaper?"
Jiang Sheng was a beggar, and people didn't trust or dare to buy clothes from beggars.
But the price was so good, a full quarter cheaper, that the aunties and grandmas surrounded Jiang Sheng, trying to find some problems or flaws.
Jiang Sheng met the challenge head-on, saying, "It's cheap because the boss sold it to me for a low price. We're neighbors. I bought it for fourteen coins and sold it to you for fifteen. Auntie, you're making me a penny too."
"Wow, even a little beggar can do business now."
"Can you make it cheaper? Fourteen coins, I'll take it."
Jiang Sheng bought a total of twenty cotton-padded coats from the county. He wore five, kept one, and sold all fourteen left.
