Chapter 22 The Zhang Family Suffers a Setback

It was quite a coincidence that the Zhang family started selling cotton-padded clothes.

Zhang Qiquan, the eldest son of the Zhang family, rarely went to the county. He happened to see a little beggar living in a dilapidated temple. He paid close attention to her and happened to see her carrying a pile of cotton-padded coats as she came out.

Curious, he guessed that the little beggar had bought it for someone else. He went in and chatted with the shopkeeper for a bit, only to find out that the little beggar had bought it wholesale at an extremely low price.

Back in the village, his mother and wife were having a lively discussion about the cheap cotton-padded clothes at the village entrance. He took a look and, sure enough, it was a little beggar.

Then Zhang Qiquan's heart began to stir.

“A cotton coat that costs twelve coins is being sold for fourteen, and it’s so popular. This business is pure profit.” He discussed with his family, “If a little beggar can sell it, why can’t we?”

It doesn't matter who earns this money.

“But it’s not right for us to take over a business that’s making money off a child,” Liu Cui, the wife, muttered.

Zhang Qiquan laughed, "Precisely because she's a beggar, there's nothing she can do even if we steal her business."

At most, they can only stare blankly, secretly wiping away a few tears.

Besides, you only earn two coins for each cotton coat, so fifty coats would be a full one hundred coins. Who could resist such a temptation?

After asking his mother to sound him out at the dilapidated temple, Zhang Qi packed all his belongings and rushed to the county. He bought back the remaining forty-odd gray cotton-padded coats at the price Jiang Sheng had negotiated.

And they sell them at the village entrance early in the morning.

Seeing that the older women in the village liked it very much, and that some people were even inviting their relatives and friends from neighboring villages to buy it, Zhang Qiquan was overjoyed and just waited to count the money.

But a bunch of floral cotton-padded jackets ruined his plans.

The gray cotton-padded jacket was cheap because it was ugly, but the little beggar sold the flowery cotton-padded jacket at the price of the gray one. Who would want the gray cotton-padded jacket then?

Immediately, a crowd of people who had been surrounding the Zhang family rushed to Jiang Sheng's side.

Some people touched the quality of the cotton-padded jacket, some repeatedly asked about the price, and some even pulled Chang Yan up and down to look at it, their eyes filled with amazement.

What could be more persuasive than a live advertisement?

Jiang Sheng smiled and quoted a price, "It's really fourteen coins, no bargaining. Pick whichever you like."

One side is drab and dusty, while the other is glamorous and features live advertisements; it's obvious which one to buy.

The older women and aunties went on a frenzy, grabbing the fifty floral cotton-padded coats until only three or five remained.

To be honest, we have to thank the Zhang family for advertising at the village entrance for an hour or so, which attracted all the aunties and grandmas from the neighboring villages. Otherwise, it would have been quite difficult for Jiang Sheng to sell out so quickly.

Thus, a polarized scene emerged at the entrance of Shili Town.

One of them, with a dark face, clutched a dusty cotton-padded coat, all alone and ignored.

One side was happily counting their money, while the aunties and grandmas who rushed over clutched the two cotton coats that were left over, lamenting that they were too late.

Jiang Sheng sensed the Zhang family's intense hatred.

But she counted the coins slowly and deliberately, without fear.

Zhang Qiquan held back several times, but finally couldn't resist and rushed over.

Before Jiang Sheng could make a move, her brothers all stepped in front of her.

Fang Heng, Zheng Ruqian, Wen Zhiyun, and Chang Yan.

Even Xu Mo, who was unable to move, frowned and raised his voice at the entrance of the dilapidated temple, "What do you want to do in broad daylight?"

Unfortunately, they were too young and hadn't grown to their full size yet.

Especially compared to Zhang Qiquan, an adult, they appear so immature and weak.

“What do I want to do? I want to beat you all up.” Zhang Qiquan raised his arm.

He didn't take these kids seriously; an adult like him could take on six at once.

Fang Heng lowered his eyes, his grip on the stick tightened, and his arm sank lower.

He could guarantee with his years of martial arts training that his blow would break the man's head.

It happened in the blink of an eye.

Just as Zhang Qiquan's slap was about to land and Fang Heng's stick was about to strike, Liu Cui rushed over.

"What are you trying to do? You stole their business, and they took it back. What can you say about that?" Liu Cui shouted angrily. "If we can't sell it, it's because we're not good enough, but you can't hit people."

Zhang Qiquan's eyes were red. "This is all our possessions. If we can't sell it, we'll starve this year."

"Then sell it! Why did you hit someone's child? You stole their business and then hit their child! How could I have married such a scoundrel? You're so wicked!" Liu Cui cried and collapsed to the ground.

Zhang Qiquan, who had been holding his head high, slowly squatted down and helplessly buried his face in his hands.

I originally wanted to make some money through speculation, but now I don't even have money for the New Year.

The poor have lowly lives; they either accept their fate and honestly farm to earn a living, or they occasionally try to use their brains, only to lose everything.

Are they destined to live a life of poverty?

They were destined not to eat white flour buns, fatty meat, or wear silk and satin.

Jiang Sheng's eyes widened. Although Zhang Qiquan wasn't exactly a good person, she saw something strange about him.

Many years later, when Jiang Sheng recalled the past, he could be fully certain that what was vague and indistinct was an indomitable spirit and a rebellious sentiment.

It can be considered extremely precious.

Chang Yan, wearing a floral cotton-padded jacket, walked up to Zhang Qiquan at some point and said indifferently, "Eleven coins a piece, we can buy them all."

Zhang Qiquan suddenly raised his head.

Chang Yan analyzed, "We will continue to sell gray cotton-padded jackets tomorrow. They will be purchased for twelve coins and sold for twelve coins. If you want to sell them, you can only sell them for eleven coins. So instead of selling them to others, you might as well sell them to us."

Money that hasn't been received doesn't count as money.

It's rare to find someone who wants everything and pays immediately, so Liu Cui grabbed Zhang Qiquan's arm, forcing him to agree.
