"go home?"
The unexpected words made Jiang Sheng and Wen Zhiyun speak in unison.
Only the long banquet conveyed a sense of understanding tinged with a touch of pity.
Fate loves to play jokes; all the possible and impossible things happen at the same time. Only when they happen to you do you realize how wonderful the world is.
“Yes, the Jiang family.” Old Madam Jiang went straight to the point. “You are the lost child of our Jiang family, and I am your grandmother.”
Jiang Sheng's eyes widened in surprise, thinking this was a new form of extortion.
Thinking about the jade bracelet with its excellent translucency and the old lady's gesture of giving it to her, she felt it was unlikely. With a bitter face, she said, "Old lady, please don't joke around. I don't want the hundred coins, okay?"
The Jiang family is large and powerful, with money and influence, and they own businesses like Youranju. How could they possibly have anything to do with a homeless beggar like her?
Jiang Sheng shook her head and took two steps back. "I'm not going to talk about it anymore. My older brother is coming back, and we have to go pick him up."
Tan Yue rushed forward anxiously, wanting to explain everything clearly.
Grandma Jiang reached out to stop him, smiling softly, "Good child, can you tell your grandmother why you don't believe me?"
Of course, it's because she's not stupid anymore.
Jiang Sheng swallowed her words and carefully said, "The Jiang family is so powerful, how could they possibly lose their child?"
Old Madam Jiang paused slightly, and Tan Yue, standing beside her, became even more worried.
Fortunately, the gates of the examination hall opened, and a flood of students poured out, full of youthful vigor and excitement.
Jiang Sheng's attention was diverted, and she rushed over, tumbling and crawling, "Big brother is out, big brother, I brought you some candied chestnuts."
Although a few were stolen and eaten.
"Slow down." Wen Zhiyun handed the small medicine box to Jiang San and took small, quick steps to protect her younger sister.
Surprisingly, Chang Yan did not follow.
The young man stood tall and elegant in front of Madam Jiang. Even though he was a little short, he did not lose his luster. Instead, he exuded a unique calmness and poise. "Madam," he said, "sometimes what you think is good may not be seen as good by others."
Just like the Jiang family, even though they are the most prestigious family in Fengjing, they might not be as valuable as two pounds of roasted chestnuts in Jiang Sheng's eyes.
“Most importantly, she’s much smarter than you think,” Changyan said softly.
Jiang Sheng shook her head several times, wondering if she really couldn't understand.
She avoided answering, making her stance clear from the start.
Life is long and lonely. During her most difficult time, when she was on the verge of death and was beaten so badly that she had to run away with her tail between her legs, the Jiang family did not appear.
Now she is happy and content. She has a brother, an aunt, and money. Her life is simple and pure. Is the appearance of the Jiang family really a good thing for her?
Wherever power is involved, it becomes a murky mess.
“But I also want to give her the best.” Madam Jiang’s eyes dimmed. “I can understand Nannan’s choice, and I know that the Jiang family came too late. It’s okay if she doesn’t want to go back, but I want to see her often. I want to know if she is doing well.”
That chubby little baby who rolled over in her arms, nibbling on her toes and grinning, was a concern she could never let go of for the rest of her life.
The old man lowered his eyelashes slightly, concealing the tears welling in his eyes.
Chang Yan pursed his lips and sighed softly, "My sister is a kind-hearted girl. She will remember those who are good to her, and even if someone else shows her affection later, time will make up for it."
Just like Aunt Zhang, and just like their brothers.
Sincerity is the key to unimpeded progress.
Old Madam Jiang raised her head and finally made up her mind, "If Nannan doesn't want to come back, then she can be herself. If Nannan is willing to come back, then she is the only legitimate daughter of the Jiang family."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jiang Sheng already skipping and hopping over, holding the arm of a tall, slender young man.
Madam Jiang smiled slightly and nodded approvingly at Chang Yan.
When Jiang Sheng found Fifth Brother, the old lady with tears in her eyes had disappeared, and the whole farce seemed like a dream.
Xu Mo was exhausted, so none of the siblings said a word. They just smiled, got into the carriage, and set off back to the courtyard.
"Brother, go back and get some rest tonight." Wen Zhiyun took his pulse. "You shouldn't eat anything greasy, so as not to irritate your stomach."
Xu Mo nodded slightly and quickly closed his eyes.
Jiang Sheng leaned against the small window on the other side, watching the Gongyuan gate recede into the distance, a hint of disappointment visibly in her eyes.
She couldn't explain why, even though she also found it very unbelievable, the old lady's words still lingered in her heart.
If you have a grandmother, do you also have fathers and mothers?
What were her father and mother like? She remembered when she was five years old, after being beaten up by Pang Dashan, she hid in a haystack and cried, crying about why she had no home and why she had no father or mother to protect her.
Several older beggar children overheard her and mocked her, saying, "How can you have fathers and mothers? If you had fathers and mothers, you wouldn't be a beggar."
“No, that’s not true.” Jiang Sheng argued with them. “I have parents, I just don’t remember what they look like, and I got lost from them.”
She knew that the beggars were telling the truth; their parents might have already died somewhere.
Jiang Sheng still hoped that her parents would live, even if it meant that she had been abandoned. She hoped that they would live and live well.
When we returned to the second courtyard, it was already getting dark.
Zhang Xianglian held the large spatula used for stir-frying, looking around at the doorway.
Seeing the familiar carriage, she finally felt relieved. "I'm finally back. Let's quickly eat some hot food, quick, quick!"
Xu Mo was helped down first, followed by Wen Zhiyun, then Chang Yan, and finally the taciturn Jiang Sheng.
"What's wrong?" Zhang Xianglian keenly sensed something was amiss. "Is Xiao Jiang Sheng unhappy?"
“I didn’t.” She shook her head. “My aunt is very nice.”
But happiness and unhappiness are things you can't really fake.
Fortunately, it was completely dark when Jiang Sheng deliberately snuggled into Zhang Xianglian's arms, saying coyly, "I was mainly hungry."
"Hungry? No problem, let's go eat some braised pork knuckle." Zhang Xianglian breathed a sigh of relief, turned around and went into the kitchen, bringing out plate after plate of food.
The fragrance soothed the disappointment in her heart, and the company of her family added warmth. Jiang Sheng finally put on a smile.
But I still had a dream that night.
In her dream, she finally saw her father and mother. She wanted to grab her mother's hand and ask why they didn't want her anymore and why they didn't love her.
But Mother just kept walking forward, without looking back.
The night was mysterious and long, and the crying little girl still couldn't hold onto her mother's hand.
At the same time.
The Jiang family home was brightly lit.
When Madam Jiang saw Jiang Chenghuan lying pale and frail on the bed, she, who was usually gentle and kind, lost her temper, smashed the cups and bowls, and even scolded her eldest son, "How exactly did you protect your sister? Where did these rumors come from? What's going on?"
