Chapter 31 Someone Steals the Tiger Skin

He hated this feeling of unease.

After a quick night's rest at home, Zhang Qiquan rushed to the dilapidated temple to urge the children to deliver the tiger skin and tiger whip as soon as possible.

Xu Mo was cooking porridge and politely invited him to have a bowl of it.

Zhang Qiquan waved his hand to indicate that he couldn't eat anymore, and began to pack up the tiger skin and tiger penis.

The tiger skin, still bloody from not being fully dried, could not be folded or squeezed. It could only be rolled into a loose roll, with the tiger penis stuffed inside, and then carefully wrapped in two layers of cloth.

The exterior was well disguised, but the bloody smell was hard to hide.

Moreover, they don't have any vegetables to cover up their misfortune today.

"We didn't sell anything privately, can't we even deliver some goods to Manager Bai?" Jiang Sheng asked, holding a bowl of porridge, looking puzzled.

Zhang Qiquan shook his head, "I'm not afraid of the impossible, but I'm afraid of the unexpected."

Therefore, we still need to provide cover.

Jiang Sheng thought for a while, then moved the haystack where she slept onto the donkey cart, spread it out, and covered the entire cart.

"Jiang Sheng, are you crazy? Aren't you going to sleep tonight?" Zheng Ruqian shouted.

The little girl grinned, "If we sell the tiger skin and tiger penis, we'll have money to buy some quilts. Who will still sleep on a haystack?"

Zheng Ruqian thought about it and realized it made sense, so he shut his mouth.

They hid the tiger-skin scroll under fluffy straw, and then had two children dressed in gray cotton-padded jackets sit on it.

They look exactly like... beggars.

That's fine, at least no one will suspect that their donkey cart is carrying something worth tens of taels of silver.

Zhang Qiquan sat at the back of the donkey cart and waved to Fang Heng, "Let's go."

The group of five people left.

Chang Yan and Wen Zhiyun stayed at home as usual, each busy with their own affairs.

But today is destined to be anything but peaceful.

The donkey cart carrying the tiger-skin scroll had barely left when a yamen runner arrived.

Behind him followed Pang Dashan closely, who was fawningly introducing, "...This should be the place. There's blood on the ground, so there must be prey here."

Chang Yan's mind immediately started racing, and he glanced at Wen Zhiyun.

Wen Zhiyun held the newly found hemp leaf powder in her hand, ready to let it drift away in the wind at any moment.

But when he saw that the person who came was a yamen runner in official robes, Wen Zhiyun's expression changed and his hands began to tremble.

Chang Yan had no choice but to stand in front of him, coldly asking, "Is there something you need?"

Pang Dashan was stunned for a moment.

This person speaks too casually. The person in front of him is an official; anyone would be extremely respectful.

These two little beggars were quite different; one was aloof and indifferent, while the other remained silent with his head down.

It seems like he's the only one who's humbled and subservient, like a dog.

Pang Dashan was extremely displeased and shouted, "I heard you hunted a tiger yesterday. Where is it? Hand it over now, or I'll make you pay!"

Chang Yan frowned, his voice growing colder, "That's not true."

If Jiang Sheng were here, she would definitely retort a couple of times and question which law or regulation in the Dayu Dynasty required hunters to hand over their prey.

But this is a long banquet, and long banquets are bound to be cold.

So coldly received was Pang Dashan speechless. He could only look to the constable beside him for help, "Sir..."

The constable snorted coldly, "Whether it's there or not, a search will tell us."

After saying that, he actually picked up a knife and started rummaging through drawers and cabinets.

The dilapidated temple was small, and the items it contained were even simpler.

Aside from pots and pans, there were only six haystacks, one of which Jiang Sheng took away.

The remaining five beds were all violently ripped open, and straw flew everywhere.

But they found no prey, not even a single hair.

The constable's face darkened.

He had clearly heard rumors that someone in Shilipu Village had killed a tiger and was skinning it yesterday, so it shouldn't be gone today.

Did they ship it to be sold?

Thinking of this, the constable's expression tightened, and he turned to leave.

Pang Dashan was puzzled. "My lord, why aren't you looking anymore?"

The constable didn't turn around, so he had no choice but to turn around and follow.

The two got into the carriage, patted the horse's rump, and galloped away.

Chang Yan brushed the straw off his clothes, looked in the direction the carriage had gone, and saw that it was going in the same direction as the donkey cart. He immediately frowned, "They chased after them to the county."

Wen Zhiyun forced herself to remain calm. "We need to inform our brothers."

How can we notify them?

The two of them couldn't outrun a donkey cart or horse-drawn carriage, and they didn't have any fast horses to ride. Even if they wanted to hitch a ride on someone else's donkey cart, they didn't have any money.

Chang Yan turned her head and looked at Wen Zhiyun, and for the first time, she was at a loss.

Two flowers bloom, each representing a different branch.

Meanwhile, Fang Heng, driving the donkey cart, headed straight for the county town without stopping.

After finally getting through the city gate, Xu Mo still had to be taken to the West City School.

Then they rushed to the entrance of Youranju.

Zhang Qiquan jumped off the donkey cart and breathed a sigh of relief.

We've come this far, we can't afford to cause any more trouble.

He pursed his lips, about to take out the tiger-skin scroll and deliver it to Youran Residence.

Suddenly, the sound of horses' hooves sounded behind us.

Along with that, Pang Dashan, acting like a bully, shouted, "Don't move! Selling game privately in the county town? Don't you want to die?"

It's here, it's here; that unease has finally come true.

Zhang Qiquan was so frightened that he stood frozen in place, truly afraid to move.

Jiang Sheng jumped off the donkey cart, looked at Pang Dashan, then at Zhang Qiquan standing there, turned around, pulled out the tiger skin scroll, and rushed into Youranju with all her might.

"Jiang Sheng, put down the prey!" Pang Dashan roared with all his might.

But they were still a step too late. By the time they stopped the carriage, Jiang Sheng had already slipped behind Manager Bai.

The constable standing to the side had a face as black as the bottom of a pot, wishing he could slap this good-for-nothing to death.

If I hadn't shouted that, they wouldn't have been able to react.

Unaware of his surroundings, Pang Dashan shouted at the top of his lungs, "Put the things down and hand them over!"

Jiang Sheng peeked out from behind Manager Bai, feigning confusion, "Pang Dashan, it's one thing for you to steal and rob in town, but today you've actually come to the county! Do you think the county government is your private outhouse?"

Pang Dashan was speechless, choked up.

The constable's face darkened further. He strode into Youran Residence and said to Jiang Sheng, "The county does not allow the private sale of game. Either hand over the game or come with me to the county government."

He must act in an official capacity and handle matters officially.

Having exhausted all other options, Jiang Sheng could only place her hopes on Youranju.

"Ahem." Manager Bai, who had been ignored for a long time, coughed twice. "Is there some misunderstanding, sir? This young friend has a business relationship with my You Ran Ju. He is not selling goods privately. I hope you two officials will understand."

Although Youranju is a newly opened restaurant, it is quite large and its clientele consists mainly of wealthy and influential people.

Manager Bai thought he had some influence in Xieyang County.

Unexpectedly, the constable completely ignored him, raising his nose and saying, "Who do you think you are?"

Manager Bai was stunned, and a nameless anger rose in his heart.

Just as he was about to have a serious talk with this official...

A young man's voice suddenly broke in, "Our Jiang family's specially hired manager is nothing to you, so what are you then?"
