The constables, carrying long knives, looked fierce and menacing, occasionally glancing back at a gorgeous woman behind them.
Clearly, she had summoned these yamen runners.
She appeared to be around forty years old, dressed in luxurious clothes. Although her features showed signs of aging, one could still vaguely discern a resemblance to the yamen runner Gao, who was imprisoned in the Yunshui County jail.
However, the constable was full of arrogant arrogance, while the woman was filled with grief and indignation. Her gaze swept over Jiang Sheng and the others, and finally landed on Xu Mo, the oldest among them.
"So it was you who accused my brother?" she said bitterly. "You are from Xieyang County, and he is also from Xieyang County. Why did you go to such a remote area as Yunshui County?"
Jiang Sheng thought to herself: Don't you know why?
But she didn't dare to speak.
Xu Mo, representing the whole family, cupped his hands and said, "This must be the magistrate's wife. We are also very saddened by what happened. Going to Yunshui County is just based on the principle of proximity. After all, no one stipulates that a case must be heard in the place of origin of the party concerned."
Such an answer, so perfectly composed, is not something a twelve-year-old child would say.
The magistrate's wife's lips twitched. "My younger brother is naturally unruly. It's my fault for not disciplining him properly. He played a joke on you. Even if you have grievances, you should come to me. Why did you have to file a complaint with the county government, causing him to be unable to return home and suffer in Yunshui County?"
They were clearly intentionally harming people, but they described it as being inherently unruly.
Even Jiang Sheng couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Xu Mo remained serious and said coldly, "The case was judged by Magistrate Pang. If you have any questions, Madam, you should go to the Yunshui County Government Office, not ask the victim."
The magistrate's wife had nothing more to say, and stared at Xu Mo with a cold gaze.
"Since you won't accept our offer..."
Before he could finish speaking, he was interrupted by Jiang Sheng's delighted cry of "Young Master Pang."
Everyone followed her gaze to the entrance of the clothing store.
Wearing new clothes and shoes, Pang Dashan unconsciously straightened his chest and raised his head, and after several attempts, he finally managed to utter a clear and resonant "Mmm".
"Young Master Pang, why have you returned from Yunshui County? Did Magistrate Pang have some message for us?" Jiang Sheng asked happily. "Then Young Master Pang, please stay a few more days this time so I can properly thank you."
These few words reveal the close relationship between Pang Dashan and Magistrate Pang.
The onlookers' expressions changed again.
As the saying goes, "When one person attains enlightenment, even his chickens and dogs ascend to heaven."
Even if he was just a minor county magistrate, his brother-in-law or nephew, as long as they were related, would inspire genuine awe in ordinary people.
The only person I disdain is the county magistrate's wife.
In her eyes, her brother's affairs were the most important, and avenging him was the second most important.
"I don't care what kind of young master Pang you are, guards!" the magistrate's wife shouted, "Take them all back to the county office!"
This was a decision made to stand up for Gao Yabu, even at the cost of his reputation and offending the magistrate of Yunshui County.
Xu Mo's expression changed, and he was preparing a new way of saying it.
Suddenly a voice rang out, "Stop."
A bearded man in his forties appeared in the sedan chair that had landed sometime earlier. He was tall and expressionless. He first stared at Pang Dashan, then looked at the county magistrate's wife, and said, "Don't play with those children."
They even described "arresting someone in the street" as "playing around."
These important figures really know how to downplay big issues and make small issues disappear.
Xu Mo felt indignant, but also breathed a sigh of relief.
The magistrate's wife was a shrew; she didn't care about her reputation or offending the Yunshui magistrate. Fortunately, the Xieyang magistrate was wary of her and dismissed the knife-wielding constables.
"Your Honor," the magistrate's wife said, her expression changing, "they harmed Hu'er."
The magistrate of Xiyang County remained expressionless. "Since it was the magistrate of Yunshui County who made the judgment, it must be based on sound reasoning. Madam, you must not speak nonsense."
After saying that, he looked at the two maids and said, "Help the lady back to the county office."
The maid bowed her head and agreed, then pulled the reluctant magistrate's wife back to the mansion.
A crisis was thus averted.
Before Jiang Sheng could even breathe a sigh of relief, the magistrate of Xieyang County turned his gaze to Pang Dashan and said with a half-smile, "Welcome, Young Master Pang, to Xieyang County."
He then leisurely departed.
The yamen runners with knives then retreated, and the onlookers dispersed.
Jiang Sheng turned around, gave Pang Dashan a thumbs up, and praised him generously, "Brother Dashan, you did even better than I expected."
For a beggar, it was already quite an achievement to stand up straight when he saw the magistrate and his wife.
Not to mention that "hmm," which was extremely aloof and arrogant, making him seem almost like a noble young master in Jiang Sheng's mind.
Pang Dashan smiled shyly and didn't say anything.
A sudden gust of wind swept by, and he trembled, not daring to mention the chill that ran through his groin.
With the departure of the magistrate and his wife, the streets returned to their bustling state.
Merchants were hanging up lanterns of all colors they had prepared—paper lanterns, cloth lanterns, all sorts of styles—making Jiang Sheng's eyes dazzled.
Right now, she's staring intently at a little rabbit lantern.
Zheng Ruqian encouraged her, "Buy it if you like it, it's not expensive."
Jiang Sheng looked at it for a long time, then shook her head.
"Why not buy it?" Zheng Ruqian reassured her. "We have money, don't worry. If you like it, just buy it."
Jiang Sheng rolled her eyes at him. "I've lived for eight years before I had the chance to buy my first lantern, so of course I had to pick a nice one. How could a mere rabbit lantern satisfy me?"
Zheng Ruqian, "..."
Okay, that makes sense.
The two continued picking through the lanterns with great enthusiasm, completely oblivious to the rabbit lantern shop owner's darkened face.
Fang Heng and Wen Zhiyun, standing in the middle, felt awkward and tried to walk past with blank expressions.
