Chapter 7 Unexpected Changes

Jiang Sheng went into the deep mountains for three days in one go, and dried three large bamboo baskets full of mushrooms, which were sold out in two days.

Including the book copied by Xu Mo, he received a total of eighty copper coins.

Including the previous ones, there were more than a hundred coins.

Jiang Sheng's eyes filled with tears. She had lived by stealing and cheating for seven years, and she never imagined that she would earn so much money one day.

Although her three older brothers also contributed to this, Jiang Sheng narcissistically believed that her own decision was of paramount importance.

“From now on, you’ll all follow me.” She patted her chest and boasted, “I can take my brothers out to eat meat and make them all rich and powerful.”

In the limited seven years of her life, the richest person Jiang Sheng had ever met was Master Niu from the east of the city, so she vowed that she and her brothers would all become masters.

I eat pork every day, salted pork!

Even digging the ground requires a golden hoe!

Xu Mo couldn't help but chuckle and patted her little head. "Alright, from now on you'll be Master Jiang."

He pointed at Fang Heng, "Master Fang."

He then pointed to Zheng Ruqian, "Master Zheng."

"Have you eaten, Master Xu?" Jiang Sheng greeted him, mimicking the villagers.

Zheng Ruqian laughed so hard he snorted like a pig, and even Fang Heng, who rarely joked, had a slight upturn at the corners of his mouth.

The cheerful atmosphere continued into the night, and even as she went to sleep, Jiang Sheng had a smile on her face.

But when Jiang Sheng opened her eyes the next day, she couldn't smile anymore.

She was woken up by the cold.

Through the crack in the dilapidated temple gate, she could vaguely see a desolate expanse outside.

It wasn't that pure, blinding white, but rather a hazy, translucent frost.

In previous years, Jiang Sheng feared winter the most. The cold weather required more clothes to keep warm, but she didn't have any. Her straw sandals and tattered clothes would make her hands and feet stiff with cold. Not only was it difficult to steal leftover food, but she was also likely to be caught and beaten half to death.

But none of that matters right now; the focus is on the mushrooms on the mountain.

The deep mountains are cool and gloomy, and the further you go in, the cooler it gets.

After the first frost, mushrooms at the foot of the mountain can still survive, but those deep in the mountains will freeze to death.

But the mushrooms at the foot of the mountain were not for them to pick.

As a result, they had just saved up a hundred copper coins when they lost their means of making a living.

Jiang Sheng plopped down on the ground, her heart filled with helplessness and desolation.

"Jiang Sheng." Fang Heng returned from outside, still wearing only thin clothes. "What's wrong? Are you cold?"

As he spoke, he began to take off his outer shirt.

Jiang Sheng quickly pressed him down and shook her head, saying, "Third Brother, you're dressed even less than me. If you take it off, you'll have nothing left."

It was because she hadn't thought things through; she had only been focused on satisfying her appetite a few days ago and had forgotten about keeping warm.

Jiang Sheng turned around and saw that Zheng Ruqian, who was lying on a straw mat, was trembling and curled up like a hedgehog because the only quilt had been given to the injured Xu Mo.

"Second brother, second brother." She rushed over and patted Zheng Ruqian awake.

People are most likely to freeze to death when they feel cold while sleeping.

Jiang Sheng had seen many beggars like herself, who lay down in the snow and never got up again.

Fortunately, it was only Frost's Descent today. After waking up, Zheng Ruqian stopped shivering, though his lips were slightly pale.

Jiang Sheng quickly cooked some noodles and brought them over.

After eating a hot bowl, a light sweat breaks out on my back.

"We're going to change my brother's dressing today." Jiang Sheng took out all the money from under the Buddha's feet, as if she had made a great decision. "Give the gold coins to the doctor, and we'll use the rest to buy a quilt."

But before that, we need to rent a flatbed cart.

Jiang Sheng ran all the way to the town, rented a flatbed cart, and brought Xu Mo back to the dilapidated temple. Fang Heng and Zheng Ruqian carefully carried Xu Mo onto the cart.

Having two healthy older brothers is great. Fang Heng took the initiative to pull the cart while Zheng Ruqian pushed it. The two would occasionally switch roles, and although they were panting, it was still bearable.

Jiang Sheng jogged after them, and when they were still a short distance from the clinic, she saw a group of people walk out of the clinic.

The group of men wore iron vests, carried sheathed longswords, and had cold, ruthless expressions.

Behind them were the doctor and his wife, who were bound by shackles.

The two men appeared to have been tortured; their clothes were disheveled, their faces were haggard, and there was blood at the corner of their mouths.

Fang Heng paused in his pulling of the cart, and the speed suddenly decreased.

Zheng Ruqian couldn't brake in time and almost flew off.

"I said, why did you suddenly stop..." He rambled on, but was stopped by Xu Mo after only saying one sentence.

"Keep your head down, don't look at them."

Fang Heng quickly lowered his head.

Zheng Ruqian was a beat slow and made eye contact with the armed constables. Fortunately, his eyes were dull, like the silly son of a landlord, so the constables only glanced at him and then turned their heads away.

"You're so tight-lipped, what benefits did Magistrate Xu give you!" the leader shouted. "Come with me to the county dungeon, I want to see if your mouths are tougher, or if the county's torture instruments are tougher!"

After saying that, he kicked the doctor.

"My lord!" the doctor's wife cried out, and was immediately whipped.

"If you cry again, I'll sell you into a brothel!"

Under Fang Heng's deliberate control, they followed the crowd slowly until the distance between them increased and the figures of the knife-wielding constables disappeared before they dared to stop at the entrance of the clinic.

Jiang Sheng had tears in her eyes, not understanding what the doctor had done wrong to deserve such treatment.

Xu Mo clenched his teeth and remained silent.

Fang Heng's expression was cold and his eyes were chilling.

Zheng Ruqian looked left and right, then touched the back of his head and said softly, "What about my brother's leg?"

Yes, all the doctors and physicians are gone. Who will treat them now?

Jiang Sheng could no longer hold back, and tears welled up in her eyes.
