Chapter 8 Picking Up a Fourth Brother



Several quilts, the thinner ones laid on the straw, the thicker ones used as covers; the cotton shoes were a bit big but still wearable, and we could just add a few more layers of cloth.

Most importantly, they had a lot of complete pots and pans.

Jiang Sheng put the small, broken pot she had used before in the corner, took out the intact large iron pot, grabbed two handfuls of rice, added three ladles of water, and started cooking the rice.

Fang Heng and Zheng Ruqian went to return the flatcar and retrieve their deposit.

When I returned, the rice was perfectly cooked, bubbling happily in the large iron pot.

Jiang Sheng pulled out the fire stick and extinguished it with soil. Then she took out a clean porcelain bowl and scooped out five bowls of porridge.

The first thing you taste is the scalding heat, carrying the unique aroma of rice and the rich texture of rice porridge. It glides across your tongue and finally flows down your esophagus.

Jiang Sheng took a sip and closed her eyes happily.

But soon, she sighed with heartache.

Before, half a handful of rice was enough for her alone, but now that there are five people, two handfuls of rice are needed, plus an extra pinch, otherwise it's simply not enough to eat.

This is the downside of having too many people.

But when she opened her eyes, she saw her four older brothers, each with a different expression, sitting in different places. Some were writing calligraphy, some were looking blank, some were calm and steady, and some were gentle and pitiful. They would occasionally exchange a few words, and then settle down to do their own thing.

Jiang Sheng couldn't contain her joy.

After seven years of ups and downs, she had met many friends and even considered them as brothers and sisters, but not long after, they left her for various reasons.

Jiang Sheng didn't know how long her four older brothers would stay with her.

But Jiang Sheng cherishes every day with her family; for her, every extra day like this is a bonus.
