There were many letters addressed to Xu Jie on the table, but Wen Yan didn't continue reading them.
Her eyes started to sting, and she was afraid that if she continued watching, she would burst into tears, which would be too embarrassing.
"Thank you, Director Wang, for letting me know this!"
"Of course. If you'd like, you can take these letters with you. Xu Jie hasn't read a single one yet. There should be some more in the warehouse; I'll have someone find them later. If you meet again, you can give these to him. You'll probably meet again, right?"
Although she had never told Director Wang about her relationship with Xu Jie, Wen Yan felt that Director Wang was very perceptive, as if she could see right through her inner struggle.
Before Wen Yan could answer her question, she continued.
"He may not be a good father, and he may never have fulfilled his responsibilities as a father, but that wasn't his choice. Your story has been trending online recently, and I've learned a bit about it. I heard you spent your childhood in an orphanage. If you harbor resentment towards him because of that, then as his former superior, I hope you can try to forgive and accept him. He's a hero, not a scumbag who abandoned you and your mother. Of course, this is a private matter between you two, and you can make whatever choice you want. I'm just a stranger to you, and I shouldn't interfere with your will, but this is just my sincere advice."
Wen Yan could only say that the director was indeed a director, and he really knew how to mobilize people.
Come to think of it, she was the first person to seriously persuade her to acknowledge Xu Jie as her father, and she was quite convincing in doing so.
However, Wen Yan did not immediately give a clear answer.
"Thank you, Director Wang. I understand your good intentions. However, these things are indeed very sudden for me. I need to think about it carefully before I can make a decision."
Director Wang nodded: "Understood. I believe that both you and Xu Jie need time. Please sit for a while longer, and I will go and find the remaining letters."
Director Wang was quite pleased that Wen Yan agreed to accept these letters; she felt it was a good start.
Director Wang left quickly.
For a moment, only Wen Yan and Shen Jingxiu remained in the room.
“Director Wang is very kind,” Shen Jingxiu said. “I didn’t expect her to be so earnest in advising you.”
Wen Yan nodded: "I didn't expect it either. Actually, since that day when I talked to him, everything that has happened to him has been unexpected. I think he must have been a very good person before, otherwise why would his former boss still care about him so much after so many years? Logically speaking, now that he has left the company, his boss doesn't actually need to be responsible for him anymore."
“Indeed.” Shen Jingxiu looked at Wen Yan and revealed another little secret, “Actually, I don’t know this Director Wang. The fact that we can see the confidential files from the past today is all thanks to her initiative.”
"Huh?" This surprised Wen Yan. "I thought you found this Director Wang through connections."
“I have some connections in the municipal bureau, but I’m not at the director level yet. When I asked around, Director Wang found out about it. As soon as she heard that I was asking about Xu Jie, she took the initiative to meet with me. She really cares about Xu Jie, and I believe he must have been a good person in the past.”
“Sigh,” Wen Yan sighed, thinking of what Director Wang had just said. “He’s really having a tough time now. He deserves the title of hero.”
Shen Jingxiu nodded and then asked Wen Yan, "Are you less hesitant now?"
Wen Yan chuckled softly: "I do feel a sense of sudden enlightenment."
Shen Jingxiu looked at Wen Yan and pursed his lips: "As long as you're not feeling so stifled, that's fine."
Just then, Director Wang returned.
She was as friendly as before: "I found you a bag, it'll fit everything in there, otherwise it'll be hard to carry."
Wen Yan immediately extended both hands to accept it: "Thank you."
"You're welcome. How about we exchange contact information? If you ever want to know anything or have anything on your mind, you can talk to me. I was there when your dad, Xu Jie, and your mom got engaged. Your mom is a very beautiful girl. I was thinking then that if they had a child, whether it was a boy or a girl, they would definitely be very beautiful. Look at you, you've grown up so well."
Director Wang is really good at speaking. Although it has a bit of the lecturing feel of an elder to a younger person, Wen Yan doesn't find it offensive at all.
The two quickly exchanged contact information, and then Director Wang personally escorted them out.
As Wen Yan walked out of the city bureau lobby, she took out her phone.
She was using her phone and completely forgot about the stairs in front of her.
Seeing that she was about to fall, Shen Jingxiu quickly reached out and grabbed her waist.
"Be careful, aren't you watching where you're going?"
Wen Yan was also startled: "My God, I'm blind! I thought I was walking on flat ground. Thanks to your older brother, I might have fallen head over heels today without you."
"Upside down, is that it?" Shen Jingxiu chuckled, then withdrew his hand.
But he quickly bent his arms again: "Linking them, to prevent falling headfirst."
Wen Yan smiled at Chen Jingxiu and naturally placed her hand in his arm.
Then she looked at her phone with a clear conscience and explained, "It's a message from the crew's group chat."
Shen Jingxiu hummed in response and said nothing more.
He glanced down at the slender arm in his arms, and a crack appeared in the barrier in his heart, making a soft, faint sound that vibrated in his ears.
