Chapter Five: Mass Grave

On the other side, Ye Nianzhen, who had arrived at the dilapidated tent, turned ashen-faced upon seeing the empty "luxury bed."

She left the base for the second time today, rushing towards the mass grave.

The apocalypse at night is even more eerie and sinister, with countless dangers lurking in the darkness, waiting for their chance to strike.

Ye Nianzhen couldn't help but question her own judgment.

Is the fate of characters in the small world truly unchangeable?

She prevented Mingyuan from being sent to the mass grave in advance, but history repeated itself the next day.

But this time, the timeline has been disrupted by her. Will it cause a butterfly effect?

If Mingyuan hadn't been rescued by that woman in the mass grave, he might have really died on the spot!

She quickened her pace and failed to notice that the surrounding "foundation" equipment had been tampered with.

A man-eating monster sneaked into the outer perimeter of the base under cover of night.

*

When Mingyuan woke up due to physical pain, he smelled the stench of a rotting corpse.

A mutilated face with its eyes wide open in death was facing him, which startled him.

The mass grave is located on the south side of the base, surrounded by the vast jungle that stretches across the southwest.

To avoid the hassle of disposing of corpses, the people at the base gradually got used to dumping bodies there.

At the same time, one can also take the opportunity to capture some mutated animals for research or consumption.

Every so often, the guards would move the southern "foundation" back ten meters to make it easier for the mutated creatures to enter and feed.

Last night was the time for "cleaning up".

For some reason, although the corpses here were missing limbs and brains, quite a few were still left behind.

It was probably a hallucination caused by the high fever. Mingyuan heard rustling noises in his ears, like monsters crawling on the ground.

He had a bad feeling. He propped himself up, his body weak and nauseous, and shoved himself under the corpses.

His intuition was right.

Soon, a swarm of mutated rats, about the size of medium-sized dogs, with six small, blood-red eyes, rapidly approached this area.

Mingyuan hid beneath the corpse, breathing very softly, watching nervously through the gap.

The rats feasted on the corpses at the edge of the enclosure while remaining vigilant for any potential attacks from large monsters.

In the post-apocalyptic world, the mutated rat population occupies a relatively low position in the food chain.

Logically, they would finish eating as soon as possible and leave quickly, without discovering Mingyuan in the pile of corpses.

However, the mouse, still in the stage of being full of curiosity, ignored the rat's warning growls and explored and sniffed around.

A fresh scent of flesh and blood, unlike that of a rotting corpse, entered the mouse's nose.

It immediately sent a signal to the rat with excitement.

Fresh, warm food! Much better than a corpse, isn't it?

The rats became restless, and soon some of them noticed something amiss. Their six tiny eyes met Mingyuan's through the gaps in the corpse.

Mingyuan's heart pounded like a drum, making his throat taste metallic.

He broke out in a cold sweat, his adrenaline surged, and even the feeling of high fever subsided somewhat.

If swarmed by a group of rats, even ten Mingyuan wouldn't be enough to eat them.

He gripped the broken dagger in his hand tightly.

He found it on a dead body when he hid in the pile of corpses.

He recognized the dead man; he was the cook responsible for preparing meals on the battlefield.

It must have encountered an accident on its way back with the expedition team and was simply abandoned here.

In the apocalypse, the lives of ordinary people are so cheap that even those high-ranking superhumans are unwilling to notify their families to collect their bodies.

Mingyuan borrowed his dagger and, from who knows where, burst forth with strength, leaping up from the pile of corpses.

The rat that spotted him didn't react in time and was pierced through the neck by the dagger from top to bottom.

A crisp sound of something breaking.

Mingyuan felt a surge of power coursing through his limbs and bones, making him stronger and more courageous in battle.

The rats noticed the unusual movement, and with a loud rustling sound, they all rushed towards this direction.

Using the corpses as cover, Mingyuan annihilated the giant rats that were about to emerge one by one, but as their numbers increased, he gradually became overwhelmed.

But then the rats suddenly froze, stood up and sniffed around for a while, and the leader rat let out a sharp warning cry.

The rats scattered in panic as if they had been thrown into a pot of boiling oil, then regrouped and fled out of the mass grave.

Mingyuan was able to catch his breath for a moment.

But he knew that an even more powerful monster was coming.

His hand was gripping the dagger so tightly that he had lost all feeling in it.

His head and face were covered in foul-smelling animal blood, and he could barely open his eyes.

Strangely, the high fever subsided without me noticing, and a mysterious power was quietly burning within my body.

It felt like being reborn.

It's a pity that today might be his last day after his rebirth.

Mingyuan gave a self-deprecating bitter smile.

Thinking of the smiles and gestures of my savior... and so on.

It seems he never even saw the other person's face clearly.

The wry smile became somewhat genuine. Mingyuan rubbed his blurry eyes and decided it was best not to jump to conclusions.

After all, he needed to survive in order to fulfill the promise he made to her.

*

Something approached silently.

He didn't actually hear it, but that's what his intuition told him.

His expression sharpened, and he looked ahead.

One, two... a total of seven carrion-eating demon wolves, followed by a dozen or so zombies, slowly approached.

These dire wolves have unique habits; they have evolved high intelligence and scavenging characteristics.

That's why they like to herd zombies.

Yes, in the past, people kept dogs, but in the apocalypse, it has become "dogs" keeping "people".

They typically let the zombies swarm in first, then reap the benefits.

However, the combat power of these dire wolves should not be underestimated; at least individually, they can easily defeat an ordinary human.
