Chapter Four: Going Out

At noon, it was time for lunch to be distributed at the base.

Ye Nianzhen waited in a long line until she reached the food window, but the female worker gave her a disdainful look and tossed her a bowl of pig feed.

Although the food at the base looked like pig slop, the bowl in her hand was indeed pig slop.

Moreover, it's the kind of swill that looks like it's been snatched from a pig's mouth.

I could faintly hear murmurs of discussion.

"Her? She hooked up with the red team?"

"What flirting? The red team just thought she had superpowers and took a second look at her!"

"Superpowers? Really?"

"Who would believe that? I know her too well. She's always hiding in her tent, doing who knows what. What kind of superpower could she possibly have awakened?"

"Tch, and they think they can hook up with the red team with this?"

These people keep repeating the same thing over and over, always bringing up the topic of impure relationships between men and women.

Ye Nianzhen understood that they spent all day at the base, just like the old ladies at the village entrance, who could only relieve their boredom with a few gossips.

But she wants to eat.

So she gave them a meaningful look, and just as their hair stood on end, she threw pig feed in their faces.

Rain and dew should be distributed equally, evenly.

Screams erupted in the canteen, but the culprit had already left the scene.

She turned and went to the management department, slamming her hands heavily on the wooden table.

The person in the management department who submitted the report was startled and looked up.

Yeh Nien-jen: "I need to apply for permission to leave."

The administrator, with half a piece of vegetable dangling from his mouth, asked, "Huh?"

"Now."

The administrator asked, puzzled, "But... no exploration team is scheduled to go out today, so you can't go with them."

Yeh Nien-jen: "I can manage on my own."

The administrator didn't understand, but respected.

According to the Red Team, this person seems to have awakened superpowers; if they can't afford to mess with him, they can at least avoid him.

Moreover, it's a good thing that those who are unruly die outside.

It just so happens that his relatives keep talking about those missing cronies, so this is a way of giving him some closure.

"Okay, but this is what you asked for, so whatever happens, it's entirely your responsibility."

Ye Nianzhen nodded.

So Ye Nianzhen took a small token and swaggered out of the base's main gate.

About five meters outside the door stands a peculiar device that is half the height of a person.

The disc at the top of the device rotates slowly, indicating that it is in operation.

One of these devices was installed in each of the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west) around the perimeter of the base.

At the beginning of the apocalypse, the Northern Base was established, using the capital city, where the nation's power was most concentrated, as its base.

The northern base was full of talented people, and researchers quickly developed this device that could spread a special signal that would keep mutated creatures at bay.

Because the number of units they possessed determined the size of the base, the survivors affectionately named it "the Foundation."

In Ye Nianzhen's memories of reincarnation, the final completed central base covered a vast area, with a tall tower standing at its center.

The tower itself is a huge "foundation" that guards the base's security 24 hours a day.

This tower is hailed as the most impregnable fortress in the apocalypse.

And at the top of the castle is the residence of the most honored woman in the base.

Therefore, that tower is also known as the "Thorn Tower".

A princess lives in the Tower of Thorns, and all men are willing to risk their lives to catch a glimpse of her beauty.

Ye Nianzhen examined the machine; this ordinary-sized "foundation" could only cover a limited area.

Therefore, they are accustomed to placing them on the outer perimeter, forming a ring to protect the base inside.

However, this actually poses a safety hazard.

Ye Nianzhen's gaze turned colder.

She doesn't intend to alert management to this potential problem because she wants to take advantage of that opportunity.

"alright."

Ye Nianzhen stretched and walked towards the jungle outside the base.

"Let's go find something for people to eat."

She strolled leisurely into the dark, overgrown land, as if entering the gaping maw of a monster.

A familiar wisp of black mist emerged from the sketchbook at her waist, circled once, and then settled on the ground.

The thick layer of dead leaves rustled softly underfoot. Ye Nianzhen kept her eyes straight ahead, gently stroking the soft fur of the black beast beside her.

"It's a good opportunity to get some fresh air."

She spoke to herself as a thick, black tail swept across the back of her legs.

As if in response.

*

Jungle was originally a natural park in the center of the city.

What was once a popular tourist destination for parents with children has now become a den of monsters.

Such a dramatic change took only a week after the apocalyptic catastrophe.

When the mutation occurred, almost all plants and animals simultaneously began an unimaginable evolution.

Some became extremely large, some grew extra limbs, and some gained extremely fast speeds.

But many more, unable to withstand the burden of evolution, quickly die or fall in the competition among monsters, becoming nourishment for the victors.

Now it is the third year of the apocalypse, and these mutated plants and animals have found their place in the new ecosystem.

Stable, but more dangerous.

The exceptionally tall trees blocked out the sun, and occasionally the howls of unknown animals could be heard, mournful and distant.

Yeh Nien-chen didn't dare to venture too far into the jungle, but fortunately, the animals she wanted to catch often appeared in the bushes at the edge of the jungle.

Although it's called a shrub, it's a head taller than a person.

Carnivorous vines lurk within; if you are stung, you will become paralyzed, suffer nerve poisoning, and die, eventually turning into a pool of nutrients for the vines.

Ye Nianzhen carefully set up several traps in the bushes, then climbed up a big tree and waited quietly.
